Contrary to popular belief, the series became good starting with Persona 3.
You know, I know the Persona series isn't the best at much. I know that when I play, the Matrix is telling my brain that it is entertaining and exactly what I want in a game. After nine years, you know what I realize?

What's the gameplay like

A mix of visual novel and dungeon crawler with a turn based combat system somewhat akin to the Dragon Quest series in pacing.
The game progresses day by day as you follow your main character through school life. You encounter friends and various events, raise non combat stats through social interactions, and visit various areas in your town. Nights consist of some pretty standard fare dungeon crawling where you collect spirits and summon them briefly in battle to act as your persona. There is a spirit merging system that, again, I'd compare to something like Dragon Quest Monsters or Jade Cocoon.
The visual novel aspect ties into combat in that your relationships grant boons to the types of spirits that correspond with the person whose bond you are strengthening. If you make good friends with the friend represented by the Fool arcana, Fool-aligned spirits will be affected.
They're a pretty satisfying combination of these two kinds of games.
Roleplaying dungeon crawling series with almost dating sim elements.
The first two games are significantly different from the newest two. Persona 1 and 2 are just straight up RPGs, no day system, no social links, just doing from plot point to plot point. Its themes are also a bit different from the later games, due to different writers.
Persona 3 and Persona 4 operate on a day to day system, where you have to balance hanging out with people, leveling up stats, and going to the dungeons. Persona 3 is hard as shit at first, unless you follow a guide and invest a lot of time into the game, you're not going to complete everything in your first playthrough.
Persona 4 is much easier, and Golden makes it even easier. It's quite easy to finish every social link and fuse every persona in one playthrough

P3 is a shonen anime packaged into a game. It's themes are "OMG SACRIFICE" and "POWER OF FRIENDSHIP". Mind you, those are not bad themes, but they are executed awfully. So, yeah, shove your opinion up your ass.

Getting stuck in a game like Persona 2 was a nightmare due to the lack of faqs and general information. Not to mention eating through your inventory of rations/potions simply to stay on the final floor.

The dungeons were not hard at all. You can literally beat the game with the starting personas as long as you upgrade them to prime and then ultimate.

Persona 2 dungeons are shit compared to SJ, combat is a nightmare in P2 so it makes exploring a pain in the ass. SJ was interesting to explore.
Persona 2 has better characters and exploring the overworld/map is really comfy. It also has a gay character for you to flirt with.
2: Eternal Punishment, P3P and P4 vanilla are all great JRPGs. Certain SMT fans don't know how lucky they are that their "worst" spin-off franchise is fucking God-tier compared to most other JRPG franchises and releases.
That said, the fanbase is pretty shit.

Fusions are the only thing you really need to worry about. the one time I ever had to plan for a boss was spamming mirror shields for the aoe magic and dispelling them so the boss wouldn't spam kill with megidolan.

Is this a joke? Innocent Sin is literally (and I do mean literally) the easiest RPG I've ever played and Eternal Punishment wasn't far behind. I don't even mean this in a lel get gud sense, I'm just genuinely curious how you could have trouble in that game where there are so many random encounters that even if you run from half of them you'll still be over-leveled for everything.
Fun games with great characters but extremely shitty stories( except 2).
Gameplay is barebones compared to mainline but it's faster and not as hard.
