Namco's patent for playable loading screens expired in late November.

Are you guys ready to be finished with waiting?
>>
>are you ready for namco to renew thier patent?
FTFY
>>
>>320081016
>renewing a patent

Quality b8.
>>
why are people allowed to patent something like this
>>
>>320081981
Copyrights are much worse
>>
>>320082201
I don't think anything can be worse than this. This is as far from intellectual property as it can be.
>>
>>320081981
If i remembered Nintendo patented + shaped D-pads a long time ago not allowing sony microsoft or anyone else to use it. So patenting minor stupid things seem to be a thing.

You shouldn't be able to patent such a fucking broad software design choice
>>
>>320082327
Copyrights last too long to be useful for anything
>>
>>320082348
Sure you can! You made it first after all (or just had the idea to patent it first, same difference).

You can see the logic after all. What if John Videogames, maker of the first Video Games, wanted to patent the existence of all video games? He would totally have the right, he fucking invented them. There isn't really an argument against it, except going "B-BUT IT'S NOT FAIR!"

Still, it'd be great if there was a regulatory body that had the power to look into patent abuse and stop that shit. It's the same thing as idiots buying up domain names like Sex.com in the 90's and then selling them for literally millions of dollars.

The system is flawed anon, it's up to you to learn how to play the game.
>>
>>320082348
Apple patented rounded corners.
>>
>>320082953
Copyrights are fucking retarded. Intellectual properties should become public domain after 50 something years after it's created, before Disney fucked it up. Patents should give the creators money from it, but it should never have given them exclusivity of use in ideas as broad as loading screen minigames.
>>
>>320080857
but bayonetta had playable loading screens
>>
>>320082953
>There isn't really an argument against it
There is.
There is a very clear argument.
If John Videogames makes the first videogame, that doers not actually stop anyone from making more.
It's the broken system that will stop everyone. And it's pretty clear that it's broken, because then we won't have any more videogames, and no one is going to benefit from it except for a bunch of rich guys.
There is every argument against it. The only argument for it is "but we want to protect poor inventors" yet in the end only people getting protected are people with shittons of money already to win courts.
>>
>>320083584
Sorry, I meant "an argument you'd take to court stopping such a patent from being filed". Yeah, there's a big argument against the fucked upness of the current system for sure.
>>
>>320083478
I'm ok with Disney retaining the rights to Mickey Mouse forever. Characters that are used by their parent company 24/7 have no business expiring till they are no longer represented.

>>320080857

>>320081016

You realize that isn't a thing, right?

Just another example of a stupid poster ignorantly posting things without researching the facts beforehand.
>>
Didn't the atari published Dragon Ball games have playable loading screens? Were they developed by Bamco?

I'm glad the patent expired, but it's a dumb patent that shouldn't have existed in the first place, much like a lot of patents. I'm looking at you, IBM, you stupid piece of patent hoarding shit.

whats splatoon?
>>
>>320081981
>>320082201
>>320082329
This shit needs to be stopped. I wouldn't put it past some company to claim they own the letter "e" or something.

I mean how can Nintendo claim that they own the concept of making buttons in a + shape?
>>
>>320082953
>There isn't really an argument against it, except going "B-BUT IT'S NOT FAIR!"
Anon, that's brilliant! You can just act like it's pathetic and sad when people criticize the concept of really broad patents! You won the debate, and there's nothing wrong with this! Holy shit!
>>
>>320082201
What? Copyrights have dumb laws, but they are nowhere near as strict as patent laws. There's a reason people in the IP field have strong criticism of our current patent laws and have a yearning for patent law reform. Myself included

It's the worst feeling when a shitty company or one you don't really care about holds a patent on a really basic, broad concept that should be applied to anything and everything. And then shitters on 4chan defend the concept and act like they aren't affected by it.
>>
>>320087914
I'd rather have copyright reform than patent reform.
>>
>>320087307
The that wasn't a loading screen, it was a matchmaking screen. The patent for the loading screen was made before that was even a thing.

Games like Bayonetta got around that by having the loading screen just use the regular game engine, IIRC.
>>
>>320088063
Yeah, because you pirate a lot of shit, but you know nothing about IP law to understand why patent law in its current state is stupid.
>>
>>320088039
/v/ is the contrarian to the point of self denial board.
>>
>>320080857

come on bro you can't copyright a game mechanic
>>
>>320083519
And the Assassin's Creed games.

Am I missing something?
>>
>>320085870
They cannot directly renew it, but, at least in Pharma, they have tricks to extend it, like "improving" the patent
>>
Hey guys, I happen to be retarded.

Can someone explain to me why patents cannot be renewed?
>>
>>320088392
They patent is for loaded in minigames asscreed and bayo just let you mess around with the actual game
>>
>>320088252
I know that 20 years is nothing compared to author's life plus 70 years plus retroactively extending it every few decades.

>I mean how can Nintendo claim that they own the concept of making buttons in a + shape?
They didn't do that. Xbox and PS controllers still have D-Pads. It's just Nintendo patented a certain kind of making a D-Pad. If you compare a Nintendo D-Pad to another D-Pad, you can feel the difference.
>>
>>320088606
From what I understand, Joe Smith worked hard to make a thingamagig and by the grace of capitalism and individualism, he has the right to profit off of it or more specifically, prevent others from profiting off his hard work.

Well, Joe's thingamagig is has been around for a while now, and people want to make their own for whatever reason. Joe had his period of exclusivity, so now in the interest of the development of thingamagigery (medicine, fabrics, computing, anything) people can now work with it themselves.
>>
>>320088606
Because the goal of patents is to promote inventions. The idea is to give people who come up with stuff first the ability to license their inventions to other people for money. If they were infinitely renewable its purpose would be defeated because there would always be a barrier (the required license) that'd hinder widespread adoption. So the compromise is to hinder adoption temporarily to reward inventors.
>>
>tfw SSD

I guess
>>
>>320088726
Yes, the Sonny Bono act sucks, but patent law is one of biggest pieces of bullshit in IP field today. The way it is structured right now can punish would-be creators, whereas copyright law provides grey areas which give a lot more room for analysis, and is thus quite a ways more lenient.

Invent something, but someone patents it first? You're fucking screwed and he can eat your dick off for it for having even invented it at all, especially if you marketed your invention first. Sure, there are ways to try and prove your invention is a prior art, but it's not going to be an easy thing to prove as patent law will favor the approved applicant who can argue that your invention has damaged him financially with ease.

>>320080857
How many years did they have it exactly?

as early as the first tenkaichi game

so a decade

might be a problem for consolefriends, but even extremely bloated and poorly made games like fallout 4 load in sub ten seconds on my pc

it is fucking retarded how you can just patent broad as fuck shit like playable loading screens. That's just retarded

HURRY,

YOU HAVE 5 SECONDS TO NAME A GAME BY NAMCO WITH PLAYABLE LOADING SCREENS THAT DIDNT MEAN THEIR PATENT GO TO WASTE

GO

How did Splatoon have mini-game loading screens if the patent wasn't up yet?
>>

Actually, you'd have to name a game NOT by Bamco with loading screen minigames, I.e. someone who has paid the license.

Sigurdhosenfield.

Ooooh, so THAT'S why there are so many games with dull loading screens when they perfectly could add some minigame to kill the time in the mean time.

>>320093235
What about Lionhead, didn't they have one for B&W series?
