It's not shitty. The only reason people hate it is because they expected R07 to suddenly go against everything he wrote before and give us a different ending. EP7 answered every mystery in all the previous episodes, EP8 tied up character arcs.
The best part of that series was the music and sound effects. It's kind of surprising how much sound can improve an experience

It's extremely divisive, particularly between the first and second halves. Give a go, but I don't think anyone would hold it against you if you threw in the towel. The writer's best friend who was helping him write it died in the interim between the two halves, and it really shows.

It's a ton of reading, but I loved it. It's a deconstruction of the mystery genre. there's really no general consensus on it, but people tend to have very extreme reactions. I'd recommend reading it. Avoid looking things up though.

The plot of the VN is that the MC is the sole survivor of a massacre and a witch tells him she killed everyone and the only way to stop the massacre from happening is to prove magic doesn't exist and the murder were executed by a real killer
So you see when you come into the game you are expecting a murder mystery, you taste the moment when the MC will finaly catch the villain or shit that doesn't make sense get explained
But halfway through it, the tone completly and utter change, where mystery was once the main hook now nobody give a fuck, the sudden change make sense and it's extremely clever and make this a unique story
BUT YOU WERE THERE FOR THE FUCKING MYSTERY!
so you see it's like playing a game for the porn, discovered there is no porn halfway through it but still end up enjoying the game because it's fun
