do you think we'll see the rise of quirky minimalistic rpgs due to the popularity of undertale?
just like super meat boy caused a storm of difficult platformers and dayZ started the whole survival sandbox genre
>>
Undertale is part of a movement that already happened. Earthbound caused it with Lisa and Yume Nikki, the VC release caused a resurgence of those. Undertale didn't do shit
>>
>>320040592
It made it more mainstream though, that's a fact.
>>
>>320040681
>It made it more mainstream though, that's a fact.
We don't know anything about the longterm effects if any because it just came out, hell, it's still in meme status here on /v/, and I don't mean that in a condescending way but a very real way.

The other guy is right though: Undertale actually comes on the tail END of a long lineage of minimalist RPGs. If it's going to start anything, it might cause a revival of bullet hell I suppose, as normies are exposed to the genre.

>Touhou is still going
>>
I don't know. I've never seen anyone talk about this outside a few internet forums. None of my normie friends or people at college have heard of it.
>>
Dunno but i hope they die soon.
>>
>>320040965
>it's still in meme status here on /v/

The game's been out for what, four or five months? Only someone fucking delusional thinks that a game with more than a quarter of a year of enduring popularity is a "meme game".

Undertale is a legitimately popular game. It's well-known. It's mainstream. I've never played it, never watched a Let's Play of it, and never looked at any information about it, but it doesn't take a fucking genius to figure out that a game that's been discussed non-stop for months is more than just a flavor of the month meme game.
>>
>>320042375
but anon, I've decided I don't like it but people are still talking about it, therefor it MUST be a meme game!

No, it's not M rated and gritty enough to appeal to the teenagers and young adults, it's design is too linear in an industry where open world is practically mandatory, and the graphics are going to turn people off because it's not 3D. Plus modern Triple A developers don't have the imagination to make anything outside of grizzled dudes with guns..

If they pull anything from this game, it'll be to bring that shitty moral choice mechanic back.
>>
>>320043478
We're going through another PC phase in mainstream media though. So gritty won't really be an issue just like it wasn't an issue in the 80s.
>>
>>320044038
>>320043478
I mean it depends on what you mean by gritty
you CAN murder everyone in the game, and the music/atmosphere gets all somber and uncomfortable.
sure, the game 'calls you out' and gets harder, but the option is there

When I refer to 'gritty' I mean ultra serious stuff that tries to push for 'realism', with mostly brown aesthetics, characters with gruff voices and scowling angry faces, and full of guns and swearing.

Kind of a blanket term I suppose, but thanks to the popularity of games like Call of Duty, we're suck in an era full of games like this.

It's even worse when this kind of thing starts influencing other games like Thief and DMC to be 'darker and edgier' so we get crap like Thi4f and DmC.

Clickbait channel that makes a lot of shitty parodies about popular stuff like Mario, Fnaf and now even Undertale, apparently he's a troll messing with people by being as cancerus as humanly possible, but I bet he's making some very real dosh out of ads as well.

weren't they both turned into centaurs too?

I guarantee its going to be a cycle of decent rpgs thats going to be released every like 2 or 3 years.

>No, it's not M rated and gritty enough to appeal to the teenagers and young adults
no, it's bullshit incompetent whimsy and randumb brand of humour is what turns people off

>and the graphics are going to turn people off because it's not 3D
no, the graphics turn people off because the character designs are horrendous and the art direction is hideous (color choices), which makes it look even worse when compared with the game that served as it's inspiration, Earthbound, that has beautiful art direction and simple accessible character designs
>>
Why are people saying Undertale fits into the bullet hell genre? Isn't the main requirement to even being considered a danmaku to be a shmup?
>>

>no, the graphics turn people off because the character designs are horrendous and the art direction is hideous (color choices), which makes it look even worse when compared with the game that served as it's inspiration, Earthbound, that has beautiful art direction and simple accessible character designs
earthbound's graphics were not exactly critically acclaimed
>>

>Why are people saying Undertale fits into the bullet hell genre?
it isn't. the rpg battles have shmup elements/inspiration
>>
>>320048580
OFF wasn't nearly as popular as Undertale, though.

I can see Undertale becoming the Cave Story of the quirky RPGs.

pretty much. its literally a nothing game with

a lot of advertising. like evolve.

Rpgs have been open world since the beginning. They should never be linear

I'm so glad Lisa didn't gain such an autistic fanbase.

it sort of did (especially among those who liked the joyful), the fanbase is just small enough the autism could be contained

I wouldn't even consider Bloodborne to be gritty. It's dark, sure, but it's going for the kind of dark, lovecraftian horror style rather than being SO REAL WAR IS HELL which is what I consider gritty to be.

>Earthbound caused... Yume Nikki
Yume Nikki was its own little spark of creativity. It caused the creation of a bunch of walking simulators that were all neat in their own way. What it severely lacked in any substantial gameplay, it made up for in atmosphere which games to this day take to inspiration.

There are no holes you can fall into, unless you count the mandatory holes that bring you to the next floor.
>>
What had people hooked on Undertale was the writing. Love it or hate it that was the focus of the entire game. The characters, story, and how it was put together is why people like it so much.

You can't just slam together an RPG maker game to try and ride of Undertale's success. Especially now that you can return Steam games. It just won't work, so my answer is no.
