The Sea Dogs series.
No one ever talks about it but there was a really fun pirate game on PS2 by westwood called Pirates: The Legend of Black Cat.
You're a qt daughter of a spanish royal who has to become a pirate to get revenge for her father or something along those lines but the gameplay was great. Actual naval combat similar to Assassins creed 4 I guess but much more supernatural stuff like lighting and ice cannon balls and magic spells to make your ship go faster. You could attack naval forts and enemy ships for money to buy bigger ships and cannons and things like that until you get a fucking man o war.
Most importantly you can also disembark on all these islands, digging for buried treasure, kkilling other pirates and various wildlife to find new spells and abilities. I always thought the variety in the islands was awesome from your typical tropical locations to entire islands full of the undead. Id recommend the hell out of it but Im not sure how well it emulates.

Caribbean just got a free big-ass upgrade. Def. worth a try if you liked mount and blade.
A game called "Caribbean" just re-released as "Blood and Gold: Caribbean!" on Steam. It is the Mount and Blade engine and Mount and Blade gameplay, but set in the pirate era. Highly recommend it
