Quake 1 is not even related to the quake history.

Everyone at id fucking hated working on this game and it was also the reason why John Bromero left the company.

Sorry bro.

except the quake 1 campaign is far better than 3
>better level design
>nearly all the enemies aren't boring humanoid shit
>harder in a good way
quake 2 wasn't bad, but they made it more generic
>>
>>320013696
Technically, 2, 3 and 4 aren't related to Quake. Q2 was supposed to be a new IP but they changed it last minute and slapped Quake on it so they would sell better. Then they just continued that series as Quake.

Would _you_ jump through a portal of wall-mounted lava?

Didn't think so.
>>
>>320015631
Romero left because he and Carmack had completely different visions of what id should become. You should read Masters of Doom sometime.

However, it is true that Quake was absolute hell for the developers to make. Fun fact: Carmack originally wanted it to be an open-world action game IIRC.
>>
quake 2 was awesome because it was one of the first 3d accelerated pc games and they added in viewable weapons which was fucking awesome in multiplayer and all the mods and gamespy oh god what a great time to be alive. i still go back and play rocket arena, ffa or ctf from time to time it's better than i remember even

>Carmack originally wanted it to be an open-world action game IIRC.
Isn't the reason that most maps and enemies are medieval style that the game was initially meant to be a melee fantasy game?

>>
>>320017328
Yes, it was originally intended to have some RPG elements as well. Interesting to think what that may have been like.
>>
Why do people still think we need more FPS when we can just make more mods for games like DOOM?
>>
>>320017938
because doom can't into platforming

>>
>what happened to good video games?
If you want a real answer, the reason is that video games became bigger and bigger, it stopped being a subculture and became something everybody plays, and because of that developers started catering their games to wide audiences instead of for a select group of video game players, and studios went from being people who want to make video games to being corporations who want to make as much money as possible.
>>
>>320018223
>mmmm a wall of text
>how engaging

don't forget that when the shareware release (episode 1) of Quake first came out, it had to be relatively small in file size so people could download it over a telephone modem and save it to floppy disks. so text is perfectly acceptable given the constraints they were working under at the time.

i mean, there wasn't even any music unless you got the CD release.

Smart people pirated them.
Retards kept buying bad video games.
Good video games went away and bad games lived on.

Corporatism.

Publicly Traded publishers.

People who don't know shit about vidya running the vidya industry.
>>
>>320020091
Yes.
Notice how back in the 80s and 90s, when the means to pirate weren't widely available, there were way more good games being made.

The quality of games dropped directly with the advances of broadband internet becoming more and more common. It started around 2003-2005 and had reached a heavy effect by 2007.

>>320021130
>You can demonize them

No, you see, when you are evil and people call you on it? You are not being demonized. You are being described.

If you had any shame, your face would be red now, since you've been called out on what you do, far away from this happening, your face remains of it's usual tonality and you claim you're being demonized.

You are REALLY shameless. And evil.

>>
>>320021473
People who pirate the games most are also the ones who buy them the most.
Simply because they're the ones who play them the most.

Considering I've bought 34 games this year, pirated 16 and played through about 20 so far I know I'm supporting games industry more than you, so your calls of shame on pirates are really just miscalls. That's why they never work, and you just end up misintrepreting them as bashfulness.

Actually, more like

>dev studio gets big
>publisher comes in offering a contract to publish their games for a percentage of the profit
>little do these devs know that the contract agreement is a trap
>get roped in and end up owing the publishers more money than can be paid off
>publisher offers new contract
>let them be bought by the publisher, and they wont get sued, and can still make vidya
>add infinity until publishers like EA own dozens of studios

I don't think there exist a video game that I want to play more than the original RPG-vision of Quake.

>Carmack's new engine and tech
>Romero's everything
>Mid 90s where ID was the biggest name in the industry

It would have changed the entire RPG industry as we know it. RPG's that push boundaries instead of only using yesterday's tech. And maybe ID would have bought Bethesda, and not the other way around. Instead we got shit like CoD and Halo, and entire generations of gamers who only cares about the latest shooter.

I might love Quake.
But fuck Quake.
