Gold is used as XP instead of buying stuff. You can level up to 50. Each level unlocks something, from new abilites to cosmetic changes.

My gripe with it is that the Kickstarter content ISN'T free. It was paid for years ago, and they still haven't delivered the majority of it. Yet they're still making content that the majority of players won't get to see instead of the stuff that was already paid for/promised to everyone.
I mean, it's not going to make me dislike the game or anything because it's a really cool game, but it's enough to make me decide not to buy the amiibo because I don't really want to give them more money.
I also just dislike amiibos being used to gate significant (IE: anything that isn't cosmetic) content in the first place, so that's part of it. But that's a whole 'nother argument.

Yeah, kinda lame that they added some actually meaningful content that non-miibo people can't access without piracy while still having kickstarter goals up.
Plague of Shadows was fucking great but this just leaves a slight bitter taste in what would otherwise be a perfect game.
Does the amiibo let you co-op Plague of Shadows also or only Shovel Knight's campaign?

I disagree with you but I get your point.
I consider they released a complete game and the stretch goals were just a bunch of small extra modes.
I really didn't expected that much effort put into Plague of Shadows.
They could simply have copy-pasted the main game, put Plague Knight with one or two different abilites, and completely remove any story and dialogue. That's what I expected.
So I gave them some extra money by buying the amiibo, and I feel they deserved it.

StreetPass arena is where you jump around a single screen stage and collect gold then go up against other people's recordings.
Not out yet in burgerland, but I'll probably pick it up because I enjoy any new content in this game.
