>In the Japanese version its name is Shinryu.

Why is this allowed? Changing a well known reference to FFV to Nova Dragon

Fucking retarded translators that don't even know their FF games
>>
Maybe because FFV was never officially translated when FFIX came out you fucking retard.
>>
You think that's bad?

In the English translation of Final Fantasy XIV "Knights of the Round" was changed to "Knights of the Heavensward".

I bought this version off of the PSN a while back, unaware of the bad translation. It's still really playable, and I've already beaten the GBA version a few countless times, so this is more hilarious to me than anything.
>>
>>319989375
Sucks to be American I guess, my french version calls him Shinryรป
>>
>>319989375
In a game which Ifrit's attack is 'Flames of Hell'. Minor change, but it also triggers my autism. But it's ok, Garnet's ass makes up for it.

Y Burn? What is it actually called?

doesn't look anything like Shinryu, also why did it have a dick
>>
>>319990021
Say "Y Burn" aloud and try to guess.
Hint: The real name uses as many character as "Y Burn" (including the space)
>>
>>319990021
I think it's supposed to just be a generic Wyvern. It's been a long time since I've played the GBA version so I can't confirm this.
>>
>>319989760
This one shakes my worldview to the core. I'd expect people who translate Japanese video games for a living to be huge nerds and know why that's wrong.
>>
>>319989375
Because Squeenix didn't get good translators until FF9/10.
FF8 while less shitty than FF7, is still a shitty translation.
Pretty sure FF9 is the first one with good translation.

Seriously, you think about it, and it looks like a Wyvern, and Y Burn is so god damn obviously wrong. How do they fuck this up?

>Translate Wyvern to Y Burn

SASUGA SQUARESOFT
>>
Square America programmers were very poor back in the SNES/PSX days so instead of doing what is known as Variable Width Font to double the amount of character they could use (for example if something had a limit of 5, with VWF it becomes 10) they went the easy way and simply made up shit to fit within those limits.
That's why the old translations were fucking abysmal.
I think FF8 is the first game where they finally learned to use VVF.
>>
>>319989578
All sorts of dumb shit is changed in English XIV. ALl the spells are supposed to use the staple -ra, -ga, -ja endings, but instead go with 1, 2, 3, and 4 for WoW babies. Paladin is Knight in Japanese, and many of it's skill names were changed in the English version to be more "holy". Also the entirety of the Scholar skillset was changed from battle tactics to a more "magical" set of names.
>>
>>319990653
>Paladin is Knight in Japanese, and many of it's skill names were changed in the English version to be more "holy".

Oh come on, at least that one was done for the sake of series consistency.
>>

Oh. I'm not an anglo so I don't intuitively pronounce english correctly.

You guys serious?
To me this sounds like FF14 was translated by a different team/studio altogether than their usual one.
>>

How so? Knight has been in since the first damn game, and could cast white magic in it as well.

Well yeah it was. They even changed a reveal that a previously heavy armored character turned out ot be a woman to a convoluted explanation that it's actually a female clone made from his memories or something.
>>
>>319990246
>FF8 while less shitty than FF7, is still a shitty translation.
Let me guess, you can't speak moon. The FFVIII translation was actually very accurate and well done, except for a few bizarre changes in Ultimecia's dialogue.
>>
>>319990730
I sure am. It's 100% confirmed that the spell names were "so it wouldn't confuse new players of the series". They'd need to get used to it for the other games! SMT doesn't pull that shit, and they've got the most confusing set of spell names this side of Dragon Quest.
>>
>>319990882
That's what I meant. It's overall a very solid translation outside of some seriously bad shit like Ultimecia.
I really should've phrased it better, sorry.
>>
>>319990876
Yeah, I didn't really get that bit, and chalked it up to having not played the old game. Glad to know Nael was just a chick.

And a hot one that becomes the hardest fight in the game, as well.
>>
>>319990876
That sounds more like a miscommunication to the translation team. Can't really blame them for assuming that this heavily armored dude who had no voiced dialogue was a girl all along.
>>
>>319991013
That I agree with. I'll never understand why they suddenly decided to remove any hints of her motivation.
>>
>>319989578
Dont worry, Thordans cast bar is still called Knight of the Round.
>>
>>319991071

There is no miscommunication, the head of the English translation team is heavily involved in the lore and story planning. He just felt like "enhancing" the translation again because he does that shit with everything he thinks doesn't sound fancy enough.

Yeah, all of the japanese scholar skills are tactics and shit because Scholars are tacticians

Adloquium in japanese is "Encouragement Plan"
Succor in japanese is "Morale lifting plan"
Sacred Soil in japanese is "Battlefield medical treatment circle"
Lustrate is "Life Refreshing Method"
Indomitability is "Unflagging(?) Plan" (ไธๆ’“ไธๅฑˆใฎ็ญ–)
Broil is "Kien(?) Method" (ๆฐ—็‚Žๆณ•)
Emergency Tactics and Deployment Tactics are translated straight from japanese
Dissipation is "Conversion"
>>
>>319991106
Well at least we have PSP and DS for fixed FF1 and 4 translation (and translated 2 and 3) as well as GBA for fixed FF5 and 6 translation.
And for FF7 we've got the fan retranslation which is very solid and I can't imagine even playing the game with the shitty original script these days.

>>319990876
>>319990912
>>319991287
Well FF14 is definitely one game I won't be playing if they intentionally butchred it just to pander to ultracasual WoW crowd.
>>
>>319991287
To be fair, adloquium means basically the same thing, but in Latin.
>>
>>319990876
Nael was not a girl, there was some weird Bahamut fuckery going on with deus darnus, it wasn't his real body
>>
>>319991405
Oh, don't get me wrong, they are all fine names. It's just the principle of the matter. There is no purpose to changing them outside of the translation team's "we know better than the Japanese writers" attitude.

The things that bug me the most are Knight to Paladin (what happens if one of the expansions decides to add in Paladin?) and in particular the spell endings. Literally every language but English uses Fire, Fira, Firaga, Firaja (or Fire, Fira, Figa, Fija).
>>
>>319991345
I mean I can understand some skills being too long like "Battlefield Medical Treatment Circle" for Sacred Soil. Plus it's kind of erroneous because it sounds like it's for healing (that's more for WHM's Asylum, which is straightly translated, btw) but it's defensive.

I would have translated it like"Battlefield Rampart"
>>
>>319991575
Are the text strings openable to editing? I could easily whip out a client mod to fix those.

I, unfortunately, have no clue. If you did that and spread it around, I would figuratively give you a blowjob.
>>
>>319989578
Isn't it only from the era of "sun bird" ?
>>
>>319991643
Sacred Soil literally sounds like "Holy Ground" to me which implies buffing or healing but maybe that's just me. Basically I don't think those Scholar translations are bad.
I'm more asshurt about that thing about character's gender being swapped, Knight being renamed to Paladin and Fire/Fira/Firaga being turned to Fire1/2/3 like in the fucking garbage translation SNES days.

Seriously what the fuck Squeenix.
They did this shit with Bravely Default too btw, Dancer got turned into Performer for no reason.
Paladin got turned into Templar and Dragoon got turned into Valkyrie. Though I'm not sure if those weren't also like this in the Jap version, but even then they should've changed them for consistency with English translations so far.
>>
>>319991575
But most of them literally mean the same things. "Succor" means support during hard times, "lustrate" is ritual purification and so on. They just changed something that would be Engrish into actual words.
>>
>>319991784
You wouldn't happen to have FF14 installed would you?
>>
>>319991871
>Fire/Fira/Firaga being turned to Fire1/2/3 like in the fucking garbage translation SNES days.
Fire 1/2/3 fans actually exist, I shit you not. Guess they just decided to pander to nostalgiafags, which is something ARR does pretty heavily anyway.
>>
>>319992035
I know they do but they're an incredibly minor and obnoxious minority.
>>
>>319991935
I have it installed. I ain't no expert, but it looks like you'd have to do some reverse engineering to get at those text strings.
>>
>>319991935
I do. Play it regularly for some reason. Guess I'm just a sucker for FF. I can check the files, but I'm not exactly versed in the subject at hand.

>>319991920
I understand that, but the point is that it changed the class from a Scholar (a medical scientist and battlefield tactician) to a priest, which they are not ever addressed as.
>>
>>319991575
even dumber is not only is the english translation the only one that uses the numerical spell naming instead of classical, but they're really selective about it.

The player will have Fire, Fire 2 and Fire 3, but an enemy might use Firaga. Xande uses "Ancient Quaga" for example instead of "Ancient Quake III"

But yeah because of that we don't get to see the upgraded tiers for nonconventional spells.

Medica 2 is Medira
Stone skin 2 is Stonera skin
Benefic 2 is Benefira
Combust 2 is Combura
Miasma 2 is Miasra
Malefic 2 is Malefira

but yeah the numerical spell tiers are so arbitrary
>>
>>319992101
>>319992115
I'd just appreciate screenshots of all the folder directories with filetypes visibile. That will be enough for me to tell if I can edit this shit or not.
>>
>>319992035
They do indeed. Most of them try to take some "lel, I played them back in the day" high ground, despite the fact that they clearly don't care for the series enough to know those were done due to media limitations and are not accurate to the series itself.

I fucking played every game at release, and they can't pull that shit with me.

Unlikely because at least design-wise, it's as paladin-ey as it gets. It couldn't possibly look more holy.
>>

>I understand that, but the point is that it changed the class from a Scholar (a medical scientist and battlefield tactician) to a priest, which they are not ever addressed as.

No they didn't, have you ever actually played as a Scholar? Their quests are constantly going on about battlefield tactics, even during the Arcanist quests.

In this case it's very clearly Orphan in Jap as well and most importantly the name is plot-relevant.
Might as well bitch about summons being called Espers/Eidolons/Aeons instead of Genju/Phantom Beasts
>>
>>319992424
He is literally called "The Abandoned One" in the Jap version. This is good translation. The Ophanim visual reference is just that, a visual reference. The "character" is still called Orphan.
