So it's not the best controller.

Does anyone know how to get the PC wireless dongle working with Windows 7? It was Windows 10 only for a while but they announced yesterday it will now work with 7 and 8.1...but with no explanation how. Google search offers no clues.

But yeah. Definitely best controller. Playing Mad Max with it atm.

I do use it. Not because it is the best, but because it is the most convenient.

I prefer my DS4, but I always need to relaunch Steam and Mumble before it works properly in games. Just annoying, so I use the Xbone controller.

it's placed in the wrong place to be useful and it's clacky like a fucking 3DS.

XBO/360 controllers are worthless unless you're only playing modern games, and most modern games are best played with KB+M.

XBO:
dpad is still bad and in the wrong place
proprietary dongle because FUCK YOU
can't even use 360 dongle
comfy as fuck
xinput is standard

DS4:
dpad is good and can be used for platformers
use any bluetooth adapter you want, interneral or USB
battery dies super fast
xinput software can be annoying but it's not nearly as bad as people seem to think

Wii U pro:
least supported in terms of software (even DS4 can work natively if you are okay with dinput)
great battery life
unconventional design
may confuse you with XBO button prompts (X and Y are switched)

All in all I prefer the DS4 but would switch to XBO in a heartbeat if it just had a good dpad.
I need my emulation, that's half the point of a gamepad.
Also can't say enough the DS4 battery is SHIT.
The sticks are fine but the battery is fucking laughable.

I got this for $20 at best buy during a sale.

Love the d-pad and the battery life is amazing.

Only thing I don't like about it is that he triggers aren't analog but it's not a big deal with any games I've played so far.
>>
>>319964129
I'm not a sonygger in fact my last console was a 360 so I'm technically more of an xbot.
>>319964060
DS4 isn't a claw grip.
The dpad position is not at the same height as the face buttons, and more than that the dpad is clacky (not good for platforming).
The main reason for this is because the xbox controller was designed with the dpad only really intended for switching weapons and so on, not as a main control input.
This still persists to this day.
>>
>>319962792
It will work on Windows 7 eventually, with or without Microsoft's support, people will manage a way, just be patient.

I've already got 4 360 controllers for my pc. They spent 100 mirron dollars to make a cheaper to manufacture controller that people were willing to accept.
They didn't spend 100 million to make a better controller, you only have to shave $2 off of manufacturing in order to make that back over 50 million controllers.

No, moving the left stick [down] is unnatural, that's probably also why the D-pad feels nice for you as it's at a better place. In most games it doesn't matter because you usually walk around with the left stick not doing as much movements as you do with the right stick, so whatever.

I own both.

>Best sticks?
Nope. The grippy texture on the sides is a welcome addition, but they are too damn small. Hell, they are even too small for the rubber nubs I often put on my controllers, so I had to buy some additional nubs just for Xbox and use them as an adapter to fit my prefered nubs on. Now that I have them the way I want they work fine, but they should have just made them normal size and saved everyone a headache.

>Best stick placement?

Autism. There is no advantage to offset sticks. Either setup works fine.

>Best triggers and face buttons?
Triggers feel a bit mushy at first but I got used to them. I think the sound dampening on the right trigger wore out because now it clicks when it bottoms out, while the left one does not. In terms of ergonomics they are good though.

>Best ergonomics?
Debateable. It's an improvement over the 360, and the 360 was an improvement over the Controller S, but the PS4 has an edge for ergonomics. The Bone controller is still built around two AA batteries and a bigger set of hands, although at least this time the batteries are hidden flush inside the controller instead of having a big ass battery pack.

>Good d-pad?

If by "good" you mean "better than that piece of shit 360 pad," then yes it's "good," because it's at least useable. The DS4's D-pad still spanks it though.

The Xbone controller is the best no-fuss option for PC, especially with the headphone jack. I think the DS4 is slightly better all around, though.

>>
>>319974417
>No, moving the left stick [down] is unnatural
Still has that issue but as I said it doesn't matter much because most of the time the left stick is not used as much as the right one for (rapid) movements.

And I should add that the best reason to use an Xbone controller, if you are considering one, is the chatpad. It takes an "almost as good as the Dualshock 4" controller and makes it into the perfect controller for RPGs, MMOs, and anything else that beckons for a keyboard for shortcuts or typing. It's nice for Steam Chat in big picture mode, too, and it has volume control for the headphones (although you need a right-angle 3.5mm adapter just to use it comfortably with your headset, since the cord will end up poking you and will probably get damaged otherwise).

If you're not interested in using headphones or the chatpad it's harder to recommend the Xbone controller. A DS4 is cheaper, and even with a bluetooth dongle are going to cost you less than an Xbone controller and wireless dongle. The Xbone controller has more battery life, but does not include a battery pack.

Ultimately if you want the optimal experience with the Xbone controller, you are going to end up paying roughly $120 between the controller, the dongle, and the play-and-charge kit, while with the DS4 you are going to spend about $63 with the BT dongle.

The Xbox One controller can be a great controller, but all those hidden costs do add up to quite a sum. Don't buy it unless you can find it on sale, because it's definitely not worth $60. I paid about $40 for mine on Black Friday which is more reasonable considering the battery pack and dongle are not included (they should be cheaper too though).

It's really hard to appreciate just how much ass that battery bulge sucked until you've gotten used to a properly designed wireless controller. The only real alternative at the time of the 360 was the Dualshock 3, and that thing had ergonomics that were about 10 years out of date when it released.

I loved my wireless 360 controller for the longest time, and I even riced it with black buttons, a modded D-pad that actually worked, and blue LEDs instead of green. I never even owned an Xbox 360 and used it strictly for PC games. Now that I have both the Xbone and PS4 controllers at my disposal though, it's really hard to justify keeping it because my hands cannot go back to that stupid battery bulge.

Defective isn't the correct word here, defective refers to an item that is broken because of design/manufacturing, not something that breaks through use. The word would be damaged/broken.

The face buttons/sticks are all cramped together. The controller is just about the 360's size, but feels a lot smaller due to it.
>>
>>319976974
Having no bulge on the back of the controller allows for a more relaxed grip. It's one of those things you don't realize you want until you've had it.

The Dualshock 3 is just plain awkward to hold no matter what so it made for a poor comparison in that regard.

No wired version for PC. I loved the controller when I played my friend's Xbone, but the reviews say the cable's connection is really loose when you try using it for PC

Anyone else have their 360 controller sticks start permanently tilting slightly after a few years? I use it just a few times a week, maybe 15 hours a week, and after two years, like clockwork, the left thumbstick is tilted slightly so that if you tap left on it and then take your thumb off the stick, itll keep registering left until you tilt it back. Wonder if the Xbox One controllers are a bit sturdier in that regard.

I don't like cables on my controllers. I'm trying to relax on my couch, not play competitive Smash Bros.

I bring up price not because I couldn't afford it (obviously if that was the case, I wouldn't have bought it) but because it's a valid criticism of the controller. If Sony can sell a comparable product for $10 less that comes with a built-in battery, the Xbox One wireless controller shouldn't cost $60.

$60 would be more reasonable if it included the play and charge kit, although ideally it should have just come with the rechargeable battery and been the same price as the DS4. There's not really anything about the controller itself that commands a higher price than the DS4, especially since some of the best features cost extra (i.e. the USB dongle and chatpad). Hell not even the Elite controller comes with a battery and that thing costs $150.

The DS3 isn't a terrible controller, just extremely basic.

Nintendo's D-pads are kind of overrated desu senpai. The Playstation's surpassed them long ago. Wii U's D-pad is somewhere between the DS4 and Xbone D-pads.

Because my wired 360 controller still works fine

Mine weren't that bad, although there was definitely some play in the center of the sticks after a few years that could result in registered movement in some games.

>Best triggers and face buttons? Check √
Wrong, the triggers on the DS4 have a superior shape and texture. The Xbox One trigger mechanism is better though.
>Best ergonomics? Check √
I think the Dualshock 4 is superior here as well.

Rest I have no objections to

Because of this absurd fucking dongle that you actually have to pay extra for.

You mean Sega.

That's actually nice... It'd fit alongside my arctic blue x360.

The DS4's d-pad is mushy garbage. No Sony d-pad has ever been on par with anything from Nintendo or Sega, you deluded fuckwit.

aren't you required to pay for some sort of bluetooth receiver if you want to use the ps4 controller on your desktop?

not trying to start any fanboy shit, but I thought all wireless pads require a dongle/IR receiver to use, if your device doesn't already have one built into it.

If you're planning on using it wireless, yes.

Mine was built in but bluetooth dongles are cheap and the one in the picture is the one that comes with the Steam controller.

I own an xbone, wii u pro, and ps3 controller. Xbone is by far the worst I've used, and my thumbs feel like they're standing on stilts with that stick height.
