Really what I'm getting at is every language has its own unique nuances that make attempts at standardizing spellings a pain. Anyone slightly familiar with Japanese ought to know that "i" is always pronouncing "ee," but Tidus isn't exactly a Japanese name, and mispronunciations of Japanese loan words are already heavily ingrained into English.
