It's fine. Both Vice City and Liberty City Stories are better.
Empire building was mostly just the gang wars from SA, plus some side missions you don't really care about. VC gave you more incentive to build your empire, really.

Gta 3 will always be my favorite. San Andreas had way more to do, better cheats, and I played it way more than gta3 but nothing beats that 2000-2001 nostalgia.

I'm playing through the GTA series for the first time and IV is a noticeable drop in gameplay quality.

V has more to do than IV.
The cars drive closer to the PS2 games.
There are more weapons, and some more activities (not great in this category either really).
The collectibles are just as shitty as IV.
There are a lot more clothing options than IV, plus hairstyles and tattoos again, and car customisation is back.
The friend shit is all optional now. They never call you, but you can call them.

Yeah I guess I should've split it up, but yours is pretty on par with what I like. I always loved the desert, I liked the missions there too, mainly because that's when you get the airport. Probably one of my favorite moments is burning the weed farm then entering San Fierro for the first time.

The driving is okay. But yes the gunplay is awful.
To be fair though, the gunplay is fucking awful in every GTA game. It's just at its worst in GTA 3-SA. If you move backwards while locked on/aiming at someone, your character still turns around. Fucking ridiculous. You've pretty much gotta stand still while shooting.

Every single GTA except IV has been an improvement on previous ones. And even IV wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as SA.
