What's the best SMT game /v/?

Nocturne, despite its flaws. SMT I and II are good but haven't aged great and their combat is inferior. Strange Journey, while well designed, is too repetitive and formulaic. SMT IV has no dungeons and too many fundamental flaws.
Best spin off series is Digital Devil Saga.
Nocturne > SJ > Persona 2 > The rest >>>>>>> Shit > Persona 3/4
I consider Nocturne the best overall but Strange Journey is my personal favorite

SMTN, P3, and P4 in their various incarnations are my favorites. I won't even pretend I'm not a pleb with this series.
I read a while back from some Anon that another game was originally developed to be SMT4 but got bumped to side kick. Is there truth to this and if so, which game?

Might I ask, what are its flaws? I am thinking of getting back into my old save on the ps3 digital. I always loved it while playing it, but just kinda drifted away from it.
SMT II is the only mainline one I played through to the end. Nocturne and SJ I got fed up with trying to fuse demons with the perfect skillset.

The reason was quite honestly it didn't take place in Toyko therefore it could not be called SMT4.

Magic is shit. While it's playable with a magic build the game was designed around strength
The inclusion of an extra ending with more content renders the other endings rather obsolete
The PS2 fusion system in which you have to constantly shuffle the fusion until you get the skills you want
Low on story even for an SMT game

If I had to pick one I would say Strange Journey but in a lot of ways Nocturne is probably the most enjoyable
Literally nobody on /v/ played it besides me but I loved Giten Megami Tensei.
It's literally SMT for PC with porn in it. Go play it (if you can find it and get it working that is)
But really, SMT II is my favorite
Here's my shitty opinion
SMT Nocturne : fun, not so hard as rumored, fusing demons is a great concept but it was incredibly annoying having to shuffle the fusion
DDS : story was bretty cool, argilla a QT, mantra system felt a bit less fun than fusing but at least it was easier to do what you wanted. Also combos were a neat addition
DDS 2 : fuck you stop taking away all my party members
Raidou : cool setting, story so far seems a bit lacking but the characters are nice. Combat is a bit wonky but it works. Only two episodes in though

Has no artificial difficulty
1 and 2 have an amazing setting but are unplayable if you aren't emulating them at 10x speed.
SJ is fucking radical, the DS is the perfect platform for SMT games imo.
DeSu has a special place in my heart despite its flaws.

Persona 4
I think Nocturne is the best overall, it may not have the greatest story and it lacks certain elements such as guns and equipment, but overall its the best SMT experience when you combine the graphics, art direction, gameplay mechanics, demon variety, etc.

It becomes more of an SMT once you get to Tokyo. But if you've even played P3/P4 and understand how to buff, use weaknesses, and fuse properly, then it will not be a challenge until maybe the end.
