I don't like HL2 though, fight me

Bonjour reddit
>>
The new Shadow Warrior is pretty good. So is Wolfenstein New Order.
>>
>>319917782
Just off the top of my head:

Doom
Doom II (excluding the city levels)
Duke Nukem 3D
Blood
Half-Life
Half-Life: Opposing Force
Half-Life 2 (and the episodes)
F.E.A.R.
Dark Forces
Dark Forces 2

Honourable mentions to Descent 1 and, especially, 2 as 6DoF FPS.

Hexen and Unreal are GOAT.
>>
>>319917782
some of my personal favorite FPS games are:
System Shock 2 ( old but I played it 2 years ago for the first time and it's one of my all time favorites now)
Deus ex Human revolution/ Dishonored (both give you a lot of choices when completing a mission or upgrading your abilities)
Crysis (any of them if you want beautiful visuals and don't mind a mediocre story)
>>
>>319917782
Undying
STALKERs (SoC > CoP > CS)
>>319921634's list, seconding Descentage, shit is good
EYE Divine Cybermancy (enjoy the shootan, forget the understandan)
SiN (bit hitscan clunky nowadays, but worth a look)
Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri (needs HD fix urgently)
Blood Dragon, probably the best in franchise despite being a 'joke' expansion pack
>>
>>319922049
Source? Looks like one of the serpents from Hexen. Currently doing a mage playthough.
>>

Here are the ones I have on your list:

I'm new to PC gaming and never bought the Orange Box so please forgive me about not playing HL2.

It's great, especially if you already enjoy Doom. It and Hexen are definitely must plays.
>>
>>319924457
As I said, I'm already playing Hexen, and I'm actually really enjoying it. Maybe even more than Doom.
>>
>>319924094
That just means you have a lot to discover. I played Doom as a kid, but never put more than 3-4 hours into it in total. Wasn't until a few years ago that I actually say down and beat the games, as I had a bit of a rediscovery of the series when I got the id shooter pack on Steam for 75% off during Quakecon. Even 17-18 years after their release I was just loving them. Though I'd recommend playing with the GZDoom source port today - it adds a lot to the experience just by introducing free aiming and modern resolutions.

Next time you see the Half-Life series off (like during the Christmas sale I'd wager), get the entire pack. 1, 2, and the expansions and episodes. It's absolutely worth the 5-or-so Euro it costs.
>>
>>319919659

>>
>>319924417
The expansion doesn't feature a Serpent Rider, just the 'Deathkings,' which are merely ai bots of the player characters, or Zedek/Traductus/Menelkir again.
>>
Turok 2 and Metroid Prime alone beat anything ever made on PC.

we had this thread a few days ago, didn't we. here we go again i guess

doom/2
duke nukem 3d
blood
shadow warrior
new shadow warrior is also good
quake
maybe quake 4
goldeneye
perfect dark
unreal
all half-life things except blue shift (i know a guy who loves that too though)
entire serious sam series
call of duty 1/UO, 2, 4
jedi knight 2 is the best, others are good
i had a reasonable amount of fun with soldier of fortune 1/2
there's a really fantastic game hiding somewhere inside halo 1/2
does metroid prime series count?
most brothers in arms games are good
FEAR
painkiller
far cry/crysis
I thought crysis 2 was an alright game
black
does red steel 2 count?
return to castle wolfenstein
wolfenstein: new order (old blood is alright)
bioshock 1/2
singularity
far cry 2 is more interesting than far cry 3/4 but the latter are more consistently fun
resistance 3 is far and away the best, but I know some people like the others too
killzone 2 (3 is ok)
stalker
does riddick count?
does condemned count?
aliens vs predator 1/2 (avoid 2010)
darkness 1 is great
darkness 2 is ok for one run
I thought rage was really fun when you actually got to shoot things
you might enjoy the levity of battlefield: bad company/2, but they can drag a bit
does swat 4 count? it's not nearly as fun without co-op buddies
call of juarez 2 and gunslinger
bulletstorm can be fun but shit pc port
does deus ex: human revolution count?
republic commando

these are all pretty safe picks
>>
>>319924649
Thanks for the friendly response anon, I might think about getting them then.
>>
>>319917782
Hexen's level design is a pain in the arse. There is little to now indication of what switches do.
>>
>>319924691
11/10 games but still not as good as the best on PC. also Turok 2 already has an official PC port and a second on the way.
>>
>>319924680
So worth a play or a miss?
Finished the first hub of Hexen last week then got sidetracked.
>>
>>319924721
>shadow warrior
I really dislike this game. Invisible enemies that can instagib you, and enemies that just do a shitton of damage with hitscan weapons and lightning reflexes in general. Blood and DN3D has a little bit of that trial and error gameplay as well, but nowhere near the degree of Shadow Warrior.

Otherwise you list looks pretty good.
>>
>>319924842
The expansion is arguably better than the base game, which is already fantastic, it's just the end boss is disappointing.

That is true, which is why I'm having a little bit of a hard time now in the Guardian of Steel level, also because of the mage's frost shard ability.

>>
>>319924978
It's decent, worth at least one playthrough. The expansion, Portal of Praevus, is much better however.
>>
>>319924721
>does deus ex: human revolution count?
Good question, shouldn't games that take you out of first person for cover systems be called Multi-Person shooters? Probably not that, too close to multiplayer, but First Person should stay first person, so the Rainbow Six Vegas and new Deus Ex games could be in a different immersion breaking sub-genre.
Cover systems can work in first person, it's called 'lean'; probably too hard for controllers though.
>>
>>319924936
>>319921634
What's up with the city levels? (Still doing run of Doom)
>>
>>319924936
Big, empty areas that exist for no other reason than "it's a city, of course there's streets around buildings"? Maps with a focus on vertical elements in a game that doesn't allow you to aim up and down? They weren't all bad, but the first two you play after O of Destruction (i.e. The Factory and Downtown) are fucking garbage.
>>
>>319924934
Noice, now know what to play after Hexen.
>>
>>319925402
they're different. Much bigger and don't have the same overall strategy to them as classic run and gun levels. Less logical progression. Some people think they're tedious. I think that they're fun just for the amount of enemies they throw at you and the variety of the landscape
>>319925426
>Maps with a focus on vertical elements in a game that doesn't allow you to aim up and down?
don't be a pleb now
>>
>>319925402

Maps that made no sense in Doom, essentially. Areas that weren't worth exploring because they didn't contain anything, and stupidly confusing layouts.
>>
>>319925426
I see, I probably won't have as much of a problem though because I use the GZDoom source port and use mouselook.
>>
>>319917782
Does anyone have that picture of FPS then and FPS now where the top ones looked all the exact same?
>>
>>319919432
Not sure why people hate on the HL series for being outdated when they undoubtedly love games like Deus Ex, System Shock, Doom, etc.
>>
>>319925569

>>
>>319925402

>>
>>319925504
Just a heads up: the expansion adds a new class to the game, so if you want to play as it in the base then pick the new class, start the game, open the console with ~ and type map demo1. This'll spawn you at the beginning of the base game as the new class which otherwise forces you to start in the expansion content.

This of course only applies if you pick the expansion class, the Demoness.

>>
>>319925789
there is literally nothing wrong with the verticality in Doom 2. When the enemies can hit you in the street its to keep you moving fast and unpredictable. You're not supposed to easily be able to hit them. It's genuine difficulty, not bad design

>>
>>319926110
That wasn't my problem. I don't stop moving to try and snipe imps on the roofs. Though they provide an unnecessary frustration when you're already dealing with enemies in the windows, and you can't see their fireballs coming since they're from such an high angle.

But my problem was purely in the progression. One part of Downtown literally has you jumping from the top of a building to a window in the next building over that you can only barely see at the very bottom of the screen if you're at the very edge of the roof, in order to get the next key. How the hell is that good design?

you can only appropriately play brutal doom if you beaten Doom Episodes 1-3 and/or Doom 2 on Ultra Violence using vanilla/vanillaish mods (smooth doom, beautiful doom 2015)
>>
>>319926485
Brutal Doom is fine, just disable all the bullshit like jumps, rolls, the dedicated fuck you button, cinematic finishers, etc. Also use the classic weapons mutator, or the classic version of the mod, or you'll find yourself reloading an assault rifle. The changes to enemy AI, attacks, etc., as well as the new gore is pretty neat though.

Quake
Painkiller

>that final showdown where you had to face off against two fucking people
Goddamn that was infuriating on the hardest difficulty
>>
>>319931687
well theres plenty of heretic visual mods for zdoom if i remmeber that add littl lighting touches and gore
Honestly i just love the textures and aesthetics in Heretic and Hexen
All the spritework and walls and murals and relifs are amzing, i just wish we could see Raven Soft make a modern game with that kind of artistic direction
>>
>>319932994
I always start games on normal these days. Played too many games with the shitty "hard = more enemy health and damage" convention. As long as you're not getting frustrated because the game feels unfair, you should be fine. Half-Life is very well balanced, and you can always quicksave before fights.
>>
>>319932994
some enemies feel like real bullet sponges but if you use all the tools you're given you should be alright

The original Bioshock.
>>
>>319933978
Is a pretty terrible FPS.
>>
>>319933848
It just ensures you won't have to replay as much if you fail. On-demand checkpoints. You still have to not fail to progress. Why would it be cheating?
>>
>>319924923
For me Blood > Shadow Warrior > Duke.
The cheapness of Shadow Warrior kind of holds it back, but it had some really great stages and I prefer Lo Wang's racist humor over Douk's action hero references.

I just love the level design of DN3D, it's pretty much my main reason for liking the game so much. I'm sure Shadow Warrior has some good points, but dying repeatedly to bullshit just made me give up and move on. I'm currently playing Blood for the first time, but it's fucking great so far. Enemies are a tad too bullet spongy, though.

DN3D >= Blood >>> SW
>>
>>319934392
It's a bit like Serious Sam, but less enemies at once and more variety in scenery and monsters. Personally I think it's great and it has an pretty metal soundtrack
>>
>>319934392
its good, its kind of like Serious Sam though in like you enter a room and just waves of enemies spawn, im more into stragegic enemy placement like old Quake or Doom or Blood etc
>>
>>319934564
Visual variety yes, but gameplay-wise monsters aren't as good as Sam ones.

its great, very good weapon variety and the battle arenas are great and feel fresh in each level

first expansion is good too, everything after is mediocre or trash

quake 4
>>
>>319934795
It's decent enough. Although the enemies in Chapter 5 get really annoying really fast. Especially those dock workers. Man fuck the docks, that's probably the worst level in the game
>>
>>319935312
Hey, if you're having fun that's all that matters. My tastes are my own; for example, I think Quake 2 is utter shit, despite what others say.
>>
>>319935685
Why is it shit anon?
>>
>>319935685
I wouldn't call it shit, but it's not that great either.
>>
>>319935565
Mainly I mean that there's a lot of melee enemies and you can outrun them all by using secret tech of mashing Space. And projectile enemies aren't terribly varied either.
>>
>>319935685
Quake 2 is utter shit though. I still like it for some reasons, but it's objectively a bad game.
>>
>>319935771
>Mashing space
Just hold it down. Painkiller really went easy mode on the movement.

>>

>Well you can outrun most enemies in Serious Sam as well.
You can't really outrun kleers or bulls or beheadeds. You can dodge bulls and kleers yes, but it's different and now you have kleers in front of you and kleers behind you and things start getting fun!

(You can actually outrun beheadeds in BFE if you sprint, which I don't think was a good addition).

Redish Brown: The Game, enemy AI is slow and clunky (you can quite literally run circles around them as they try to figure out in which direction to raise their gun), and most weapons lack a sense of power when you shoot them. It was made as a tech demo, and it shows. Quake is so much more fun, flows a lot better, and has more powerful weapons.
>>
>>319936432
Disagree heavily on weapons, I hate Q1 guns, they all feel like shit except maybe for explosives. Q2 chaingun is godly, shotguns are good, hyperblaster and rail were pretty fun too. But yeah, enemies are too slow.
>>
>>319936432
Quake aged like shit, while Quake 2 is still fun to play.
>>
>>319936432
Literally not different than Quake 1.

>brown the game
>stupid ai
>guns feel weak as shit except for the super nailgun / rocket launcher
>>
>>319929915
It's a design decision, not laziness. You lot really should stop using lazy to describe something you don't like.
>>
>>319936219
Shit you're right. I just booted up Black, I remembered incorrectly. It's still
>>
>>319936809
It's not about AI being smart, it's about monsters actually being dangerous. You can run in circles around Q2 tank, which is a top tier enemy monster. Try that with a shambler or vore and you're going to get ass-ravaged.

F.E.A.R

Slow-Mo is fun as fuck and highest difficulty doesn't make enemies bullet sponges.

Serious Sam series

Last one cost 500k to make and it looks good while new 2d games need millions to be made and they suck.

Powerslave (Exhumed).
It's like a Serious Sam pre-alpha in Build engine. The guns also feel very satisfying. And there is lioness booby.

The regular shotgun is okay, but nothing great. Even the super shotgun is pretty dull, to be honest. Maybe it's something to do with the lack of muzzle flashes, but they never felt fun to shoot. The starting machine gun is awful, as well. It's been a long time since I've played it now, though, had to YouTube the weapons to shake my memory. I remember it playing significantly better in multiplayer (no wonder that was the focus of Q3).

>>319936587
I feel the exact opposite.

>>319936809
Quake had stupid AI, yeah, but not to the point of trivializing them. That grunt thing in Q2, forgot its name, runs up to you, raises its gun and then shoots. By that time you're already behind it, scratching your ass. And while Quake has a similar colour scheme, it still had a much more unified aesthetic underneath it, and was allowed to use clear colours when it was fitting. It wasn't just redish brown.

>>319937609
Shotguns have good sounds. Regular MG is actually pretty fun as it has good sound, recoil and gibs smaller enemies, but you get CG a couple of maps later and it makes sense saving bullets for it because it shits on any enemy in seconds.

Sound is only one part of it. But visual feedback is also important. The shotgun in Quake 2 might sound good, but it doesn't look good firing.

Save scumming is when you save, try something out, and then load if you fail. Like taking a shot in X-COM, and then loading if it misses, until you finally hit it. Even then it's not cheating, just against the spirit of the game. In FPSs I usually quick save before and after every fight (so every few minutes, really). Because I see no reason to go through the same section multiple times should I fail further ahead.
