I grew up with an N64 and didn't play much PS1. What are some of the best PS1 games I should play?
>>
>>319887938
PS1 games generally aged like milk and do not stand up to this day. One of the only games that still stands up and is a solid 8/10 game is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Don't waste your time with the other suggestions in this thread, they aged poorly.

Nope. The N64 sucked ass. It also only has a few games that still stand up to this day, such as Super Mario 64, Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie, and Majora's Mask. Every time someone brings up the PS1 or N64 you get these huge lists of shitty games and it's just embarrassing and dishonest.

>>319888409
I don't agree with "best platformers" but it does certainly have some decent RPGs.

Presumably because different tastes exist I would assume.
I personally like the 64 better, although I like both.
I mainly played RPGs and Resident Evil games on the PS1. Granted the PS1 is host to the golden age of squaresoft, but you can only play so many of 1 genre.
N64 had some of my favorite racing, action, platforming, and shooter games at the time.
>>
>>319893285
How can the N64 even compete with the PS1 in racing games of all things? Like seriously.

Dunno, when I was growing up with both consoles the only racing game for PS1 I had was wipeout. I wasn't into regular car racing, just kart/future shit.
Once again, different strokes for different folks. I had mario kart, F-zero, wave race on the N64.

Metal gear solid is good and has aged well

It's what they had as a kid and everyone played the 30 or so hits the N64 had, whereas the PS1 with its enormous library had a much higher chance of giving someone a mediocre experience. All the games posted in this thread are good, but there are a lot of not so great games for the system.

The N64 also had better graphics which at the time actually kind of meant something. The PS1 had games with prerendered backgrounds and full motion video, but they were far and few-- mostly it had games with bad textures and really blocky models.

Load times and damaging of media were also issues. It was not uncommon for a PS1 game to get scratched and then have issues playing. I remember it wasn't long before the MP3s on my Tony Hawk 2 disc refused to play, and load times took an eternity. That sort of thing isn't an issue when emulating, but on the real hardware it can be a big problem. The N64, with its cartridges, had none of that.

I think the PS1 is a better console because of its library of classics, but I can see why someone would think the N64 is better.
>>
>>319894134
>The N64 also had better graphics which at the time actually kind of meant something

Smeared textures everywhere is better 3D? Also the N64 had no 2D games to speak of.

>Load times and damaging of media were also issues

Most load times last a couple of seconds and in most games they also don't happen often.

In these days PS1>Saturn>>>N64 unless you are still coated in nostalgia.
>>
>>319894134
I don't know if I was just unlucky, but my first PS1 that my parents bought brand new had it's disc reader break within the first like 2 months. Maybe someone else in my house fucked with it I don't know, but I doubt it. But I got a little jaded from that experience because my N64 seemed nigh unbreakable after getting knocked off a table by my dog 3 times and working still every time.

Of course nowadays I have to finagle with the connectors in the carts for my N64 so it evens out over time I guess.
On that note does the PS1 have the greatest jrpg list of all time? Or is that still the SNES
>>
>>319894387
>no 2D games to speak of
Yoshi's Story, Mischief Makers, Banghai-O

>Most load times last a couple of seconds and in most games they also don't happen often.
This is delusion. A ton of games had lengthy load times of 15-30 seconds. That doesn't sound like much in writing but it is very, very noticeable when you're immersed in the game.

>>319893285
Sure, we can all have our own opinions. You might prefer mario kart over 20 other PS1 racing titles. I got an xbox just for Halo and it was more than worth it for me

But looking at it objectively, tastes aside, I don't see how the N64 can be the better console. PS1 got a lot of the 3rd parties, and those 3rd parties were passionate about their new liberties out of nintendo's long-lasting grip. PS1 got the same ammount of good and "experimental" games (by that I mean not so good but kind of trippy)

>>319894134
Hmmm I really get your point.
All my N64 friends had the same exact 4 or 5 games with a few others on the side, but my PS1 friends had vastly different libraries (for me it was fun trading games and trying theirs out) I got plenty of weird and cheap second-hand PS1 games when I went to open markets, you know, there's always a shady person selling them.
And as a kid I loved the experience of always finding 10 or 20 new games, and I could get 2 or 3 at a time because they were so cheap. I didn't mind the mediocre/bad games because there were so many but I can understand that N64 wins in consistency
>>

we've gone over this. Neither console did this well, you either get vaseline on your screen or aliasing and dithering everywhere with either console.
Personally? i prefer the former over the latter.

>>319894864
>Sure, we can all have our own opinions
Well yeah, I was answering your question why I think the N64 is better.
I didn't have a PC back then, and even if I did I doubt it would have been as strong as the consoles, so I had all the classic Nintendo first party games, plus shit like DOOM64 (which is still fantastic), Perfect Dark, Rogue Squadron, Turok, etc.
I liked shooters and platformers and the 64 excelled at these. Even objectively the 64 has some strengths over the PS1. I really don't think it's as clear cut as you make it out to be

I don't know man.. N64 hits some high notes, but the lack of games by comparison really cripples it in my mind.
They are both good consoles, but the PS1 got bombarded with good games. It might lack on FPSs, but there are still plenty of TPSs, isometric shooters and top-down shooters.
It als ohad an explosion of Jrpgs and plenty of 2D/2.5D/3D platformers, also a lot of arcady games similar to the Dreamcast

Rugrats: The Search for Reptar (if you grew up with the show its great)

Tekken 3
Toy Story 2 (has no right to be as fun as it is)
Team Buddies

>>
>>319896425
Well we already listed God Hand, but I say that just because even still most popular lists will leave it out because it's "too hard"

I wish I had my PS2 collection on hand right now to recommend some stuff, lemme do some googling though

>>319896326
I get it, variety is the spice of life. But I'll just say quantity isn't quality. Yes the PS1 had a lot of good games, but it had a few bad games and a looot of mediocre games.
I dunno, I play my PS1 for tactics, RPG, and survival horror games. That's pretty much it. I just don't like most of it's platformers, and most of it's shooters feel janky as fuck playing them now. This is all just my opinion obviously, but I genuinely don't think the PS1 had as many "great" games as the 64, although it had far better "good" games than the 64.
But really I don't see the point in comparisons since it wasn't until after the PS2/GC that it became pointless to own more than one console.
>>
>>319896732
I don't consider it piracy if the games are no longer available in stores. It's not my fault Sony stopped supporting my ps2.

Of course there are good platformers on ps2. Ratchet, Jak, Sly.

Never said I was good at games, and I haven't played Landstalker.
Doesn't mean the game didn't frustrate me with some of it's platforming.
I genuinely liked it's writing and it had some neat combat stuff to do, but some dungeons platforming required way too much from me. There wasn't any danger in failing, just the hassle of going back up and retrying. Didn't feel necessary at all.
Then of course some of the later dungeons randomly reverted back to simple platforming and it was fun again.
>>
>>319887938
Play this OP. The combat system requires you to git gud despite it being turn based, but once you have a knack for it the game is really fun, and the characters are quite likeable.

The first two Monster Rancher games are on PS1, with 2 being pretty much the best in the series. But make sure you can use the game's function to generate a monster from CD, otherwise you'll be very limited.

Raystorm is a good port of the arcade, also a pretty good game. Though there's an HD version for Xbox 360 I think.

Rhapsody: A musical adventure. As an SRPG it's quite easy and simplistic, but where that game shines is in the little musical numbers the story has. Shit like the characters singing and dancing and all. Be aware the story is quite girly though.

It's fucking dreadful. That game does not let you write off monster deaths as a simple mechanic like Tomagachi. You have to watch them drag their feet, collapse, see their ghost slowly rise out of their corpse, see Coltia cry for fucking ever, have a god damn FUNERAL with everyone in attendance, and then periodically fucking clean their headstone for the rest of the game all while being reminded of the anniversary of their death.
>>
>>319900482
I remember being a kid and playing MR1 for the first time. Everything was sunshine and rainbows and adventure.

Until that one Golem fucking chopped my monster in two. And then Holly gave the "whoops your monster got fucked up in that fight, better retire him from the tournament" message, followed by my monster dying as soon as the tournament was over. Things were never the same.

And then 2 made things harder, and added a whole lot of unlockables and shit. I swear some of those have some "Mew under the truck" bullshit ways to get.

>PS2 emulation doesn't work so well.
For the Ace Combat games (which is a great series). But it's pretty good overall.

But most of the known games run great.

There's nothing wrong with modding a PS2 since you can get those for cheap and most people don't have the machine to run PS2 games at full speed (or with filters and any of the other emulation quirks).

Sony NEVER called the first playstation "PSX" besides a few inside documentation and the boot sequence, officially the first console is called "Playstation" or "PS"
PSone was the redesigned unit

Sony DID call a japan only PS2 based DVR the "PSX" with X standing for XMB since it was the first usage of the OS on their products
Sony also called their recent expo PSX, standing for Playstation eXperience

The whole misconception comes from a few magazines getting a hold of a early dev unit being called the "PSX" and reported it as so, making most of the anglo readers wrongly associate PSX with the first playstation

Top loader PS3 had no PS1 software piracy encryption, so its assumed the previous 2 models didnt either, however the method to use the bootleg disk was the same as the very first one on the PS1, boot the system with a legitimate disk, then swap it by a bootleg one, but due to the first two models having an ejecting disk driver, pressing the eject button would cancel the boot sequence, while in the top loader, you could just jam the top open and swap disks
