Why is it so much fun to build a base and settlement in this game even when compared to games like Anno? Is there anything that comes close?

Well, I remember in Empire Earth 1 and 2 building bases sucked because you could never get buildings close enough to eachother to look "comfy", which you can do in aoe2.
Is anno good? I saw a video for the latest one, and jumping from one zone to other, all having different properties seemed fun, but the reviews on steam are s kinda low

Problem with EE was that half of the buildings become obsolete as you move through the ages.
You can't produce archers and cavalry anymore once tanks and planes are prevalent.

yeah annos are pretty fun. there's almost no challenge in the latest one, you don't even need to think where you are going to put your buildings, you can just move them. but it is comfy. the one huge problem is that there are no random maps, and there's only the campaign mode. you don't have to follow anything though. i think the maps are big enough for a solid 25-30 hours of gameplay.
