Enemy Within on normal is a good place to start if you're not experienced with tactical games.

Just fucking play it you nigger why even ask? If you want to know just fucking play it

>tactical game where you kill aliens

Wow what an enlightening thread this is now I hope now that you are prepared to go into the wilderness of a fucking video game I wish you'd just fucking die

>Enemy Within on normal is a good place to start
how come? is the A.I. easier or is the game simpler? I have experience with tactical games in the form of RTS, but not like xcom with turned based gameplay and fixed amount of units.

What about the story? Is enemy within a prequel?

Enemy Within is just vanilla but with more stuff.

Just like how an expansion is supposed to work.

You're in for shitty flanks, crits that kill off your favorite custom characters, savescumming, and lots and lots of ayy lmaos.

If you're a scrub.
>>
It's a disappointment. Sure, the grafics are better than the original, but mechanically it's a massive step back.
>original
>hide behind a wall
>if alium wants to hit you then need to flank you or shoot trough the wall

>Enemy Unknown
>hide behind a wall
>alium doesn't have to flank you or destroy the wall
>alium just has a 50% chance to not hit you because cover is just a passive buff and not a solid object
>if he shoots you then the bullet will go trough the wall as if it's not even there
There's no excuse for this.

>CLASSIC IRONMAN

what does that even mean?
>>
>>319881606
Classic as in classic difficulty, the second-hardest difficulty where it's kind of tough but not bullshit like impossible.

Ironman as in you can't savescum, the game autosaves after every action and you can't save + load to get the results you want like these other literal-fucking-plebs.
>>
>>319881464
If you can figure out an alien squad on the edges of the fog of war, remember that they only activate about ~16 tiles from you. Thus, running around them as long as you don't touch their FoV allows you to set up for ambushes or just finding the right covers to engage.
Note that if you were to take more than one turn setting up, the alien pod may walk into the 16 tile range and engage whether you're ready or not.

The game is also ridiculously easy as it goes on, as long as you are not doing impossible ironman.
>>
>>319880230
Squadsight Snipers are going to have your highest Kill count, Invest in them and keep em safe

if you intend to sprint somewhere, do one blue move action first just to scout and do the other. Never commit to anything blindly.

If your plan hinges on one certain alien dying so you are clear to move/kill others. make sure you have a backup plan if your first shot misses.

Romance Dr Vahlen

Overwatch a lot, advance slowly using the edge of the map, don't be afraid to fling grenades everywhere if you need to, get a Foundry and SHIVs asap.

If using EW, invest in genetics like Adaptive Bone Marrow (unlocked by Meld research) and Neural Dampening (Muton Berzerker Autopsy).

Sight range is 17 tiles in a circle around every soldier/alien, the more you play the more you can exploit this
Ayys can't shoot what they can't see, so hiding behind cover that blocks line of sight will keep you safe
When out of combat, it's fine to leave troops out of cover since the "free" move when ayys are sighted is just them overwatching or sprinting into cover
as a general rule, don't make any yellow (2nd) moves with your troops until everyone has made a blue move. you don't want to sprint a guy to point A, move guy2 to point B, activate ayys, and then have guy1 flanked cuz he's already moved
The ayy's travel in packs of two to four, and are completely independent of each other and completely oblivious until you make visual contact
Start on Normal Ironman, save scumming is wrong and you'll learn how to play the hard way
>>
>>319882860
so you're saying I should skip enemy unknown and just play enemy within?
>>
>>319880230
a good time. my first time through was a BLAST. I couldn't stop playing. Sure it's unforgiving but on normal it's perfectly manageable. The story is actually pretty cool
>>
>>319883747
some guy is telling me to skip enemy unknown and just start playing enemy within, do you agree?
>>
the one truly messed up thing with the game is pretty important. When you see an enemy, or they see you, you "activate" them and their crew. 2-4 enemies. They will basically be fighting from that point on. sometimes they run away but the difference is that if you encounter them again they might be lying in ambush (overwatch) so they're still dangerous. The game is balanced for you to only ever activate one, possibly two such groups at a time. Every mission is supposed to be split up into several smaller battles, not one big one. If you activate three or more groups at once you will basically have lost (not 100%, on normal you might make it out with a loss or two, but still).
>>
>>319881986
>the game autosaves after every action

in battle it only auto saves at the start of your turn. I have quickly closed out of my classic ironman run if a good guy dies to some bullshit
>>
>>319883861
I agree
>>
>>319883861
I can't say. I only played EU, then skipped right to a mod called Long War. I bought EW because LW builds on it, but LW takes much longer and is a lot harder so I haven't really gotten into trying the new content in EW yet.. I'm just starting to play LW again.

I think either is fine. I'd try EU and if you like it you could expand the content with EW. Or, if you want to max out the experience and don't mind payin a little extra you could go EW right away. I think the content is good, the new enemies and mission types definitely add something.
>>
>>319883861
Yes. As with all this company games, you don't touch them until after at least a year and few expansions

Elite Solider allows for more customization options

Slingshot is a 3 mission pack and it can be played in EW and EU. Gets good rewards.

There is also an EW only 3 mission pack but it's jot as good

Slingshot feature a unique Heavy named Zhang, a mission to place transmitters on a train, and landing a squad on UFO battleship.

The other DLC with Operation Progeny isn't so great. It starts with a "escort this schmuck" mission with tons of Thin Men, then you have to wait until after the aliens attack your base to do the second and third missions, which are both pretty boring timed missions.

It's "elite gamerz" who think it's "unfair" to use (in a single player game, mind you) a feature the devs put into the game. It's similar to people who bitch about min/maxing. Just because they don't like gamey strategy doesn't mean it's not viable.

It's probably best if you don't enable any the first time. If you really want some Second Wave options for the first run, go with Hidden Potential and Aiming Angles.

Afterwards, I'd pick everything but New Economy and Damage Roulette. New Economy can fuck you up really bad (pic related) and Damage Roulette just means that your rifles deal pistol-tier damage while Thin Men one-shot all your grunts.

I got Enemy Within and the original UFO Defense on the same sale, and figured I'd play through one a bit them move on to EW. But I'm having so much fun with UFO Defense, after playing both for a bit I like the original so much better. Why did they have to change so many things in EW, why couldn't it have just been the same with more stuff
>>
>>319886503
No.
>Hidden Potential is a Second Wave option that randomizes stat growth as a soldier is promoted. The range of growth is as follows:

>Aim:
Heavy : 0-2 Aim per level
Assault : 1-5 Aim per level
Support : 2-6 Aim per level
Sniper : 3-9 Aim per level
MEC : 1-5 Aim per level

>HP: Heavy has 60% chance per level of +1 HP, all other classes have 50%

>Will is treated in the same way as normal, that is:
2-6 growth for all classes
4-13 with the Iron Will upgrade from the Officer Training School

>Movement does not increase with leveling.

which one is best?
>>
>>319887790
North America if you want money
Europe if you want more non-whites
>>
>>319887790
North America.

Europe has a lame bonus (Africa's and Asia's are the best)
>>
>>319888043
I'm talking about continent bonus. What's more important?

cheaper aircraft and aircraft weapons?

cheaper labs and workshops?

cheaper foundry projects and officer training schools?

autopsies/interrogations being instant?

Monthly income increase by 30%?
>>
Anon, LPs went out of fashion when something awful started putting paywalls.

So unless this is going somewhere, drop the act and just play it out.
>>
>>319888304
Monthly Income and cheaper foundry.

and a heads you, you can gt the other bonuses, you need to cover the continent with satellites
>>
>>319887790
I personally like Asia and South America the most but they don't unlock until you've played/lost the game once. I'd go with Europe, the discount on workshops and labs is pretty cool.

>>319888304
>cheaper foundry projects and officer training schools?
This. So much good stuff comes out of the foundry.
>>
>>319888590
>the discount on workshops and labs is pretty cool.

who uses those?
>>
>>319888810
Workshops make everything cheaper and Labs make research go faster. Satellites and late game weapons like Plasma and Alloy Cannons are really expensive and essential aircraft upgrades like the Firestorm and Fusion Lances take a long time to complete.

It's generally not a very good idea to depend solely on rewards or wait for the Council to give you more scientists/engineers.
>>
The best piece of advice I could ever give for EU or EW is that you move everyone up for one action, heavies and snipers last, then go into overwatch if you haven't spotted any ayylmaos. On Classic Ironman I lost maybe two or three guys the whole campaign just because of snipers with EXCEPTIONAL aim in overwatch.

>>
Never sprint into fog.

Abuse overwatches.

Play enemy within, is enemy unknown but better, it also has MECs.

The shiv is your friend. Your disposable friend.

Savescumming is for the casuals, don't do it. Ironman will prevent that, but sometimes you'll want to undo a genuine missclick. So do a "ironman without ironman" run.

If you get newfoundland mission on the first months, just ignore it.
