Anyone else feel the monsters in horror games are "too human"? They always look like people dressed up, why can't we get more interesting designs?

Same reason why zombies and humanoid aliens are everywhere. It's easier to design, easier to make, easier to create shitty AI and animations for, doesn't require creativity, etc

Bloodborne was a godsend
Because original designs are a huge risk nowadays.
If kids see something that isn't human shaped or dog shaped, it looks stupid to them.
Also devs are lazy.

the monsters were never meant to be too far removed from humans themselves
contorting a familiar form is not necessarily less scary than having an original form

Humanoid monsters are generally scarier to most people.

This. Humans just react more strongly to humanoid creatures in general. If it's a big random creature you're going to feel more like you're playing monster hunter than playing a horror game.

This is the correct answer. Humanoid beings that resemble us are generally creepy to most of us. This phenomenon is called "uncanny valley"

To come out and defend Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 and 4, it's because the town is influenced by the person in it.It plays off their fears and regrets, their own evils and short comings. The resulting amalgamation of monsters is because it's entirely constructed by a human mind.
It makes sense in the context of those Silent Hill games. It's also a case of relativity, something can be much more frightening if it subverts your expectations of something being normal.

Bloodborne's monster designs were great imo.
Took the eldritch influence and made a bunch of monsters that are fairly unique and imposing to look at.
