I really have no idea. I played it when I was a child, and I had the same reaction when I actually got around to playing it. From the marketing and magazine impressions, I'd never suspected that that game was anything but a real time game with a massive world where you could do what ever you wanted.
I have no idea why people nostalgia over the original gameplay and am looking forward to the remake. I hope it ends up being the game I initially thought it would be.

My only turn-based experience as a kid was Pokémon, and then Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario later on in middle school, and I still think Final Fantasy VII, while overrated, is fun as fuck. Final Fantasy VIII also has some great fucking gameplay. Also, you can speed the gameplay up, anon. Turn-based gameplay isn't outdated, newer generations are just too impatient.

If we're specifically discussing JRPG combat here, no. There is no JRPG with a deep, strategic combat system. No entry in the genre requires anything more than grinding and following a flowchart. Pokemon is the closest thing to an actual exception to this. At best, the most skill intensive thing that you'll get is trying to figure out how various systems actually work through trial and error without using a guide.
If you're including things like actual strategy games, real time with pause etc. then we have no real disagreement, but specifically with JRPGs, including the likes of Chrono Trigger, their battle systems outright suck and you should be perceptive enough to understand this.
