Sin & Punishment 1 and 2, Ikaruga, and Mischief Makers are the only games I've ever played by them and they are some of my favorite games of all time.

They're like Platinum Games; the only way I could see someone not liking anything they did at all is if they just didn't really like pure action vidya.

>>319842989
Probably Sin & Punishment 2. I want to buy an N64 and find a copy of Mischief Makers and play through that again. I also want to finally beat everything else they've ever done.

Despite the fact that most Treasure fans are score attack shooting fans (and I am one myself), Mischief Makers and Dynamite Headdy are actually their best work. Probably BECAUSE they're more casual and don't take themselves too seriously, while still having solid gameplay and level design.

Sin & Punishment is one of the best rail shooters ever made, and deserved to take Star Fox 64's limelight if it weren't for at least three different reasons why that never happened. Star Successor was an excellent follow-up and a surprise hit on the Wii.

I don't like beat-em-ups. I think they're boring, repetitive, and unbelievably shallow. So there's just a little bias when I say that Guardian Heroes is the only good beat-em-up ever made.

Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga get way too much hype, and if there's anything we've learned from Final Fantasy VII and Undertale it's that if you want people to like a game, you need to shut the fuck up about it. But they really are very good shmups. As good as they are unconventional. Not for everybody.

They dropped the ball with Stretch Panic, Wario World, Silpheed, and a number of others. I don't much care for the Bangai-O games. Sadly, that was Wario's first and last foray into 3D. It should have been a match made in heaven, but it wasn't.

Alien Soldier is good. I never had a high opinion of Gunstar Heroes and would rather play nearly any other 2D Contra.
>>
>>319842989
Sin and Punishment, followed closely by Alien Soldier, and then slightly behind that Dynamite Headdy.

What exactly are you referring to with beat 'em ups.
I enjoy stuff like Mad Stalker, Viewtiful Joe, Muramasa, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, and a number of fully 3D games like DMC, Wonderful 101, Ninja Gaiden, etc.
It's the traditional 2D but you can walk up or down beat 'em ups that most fit your description for me. I haven't been able to get into those.

Reimagining, more like.
I would prefer it to the original if it wasn't so full of gimmicky sections all about scaling and rotating sprites and didn't have those OP as fuck super weapon things.
Keeping the weapon combos and being able to throw shit would have been nice too, though all I ever used was fire+chaser and sometimes fire+laser.

>>319847476
Man, what an achievement this game was.
Treasure is too humble to even mention it on their site.
>>
>>319845774

>>319843643
>>319844526
Shit, I forgot Gradius V and Astro Boy: Omega Factor. Not sure what to say about them. I think V is the crowning achievement of the series, even moreso than Gaiden. Even people who don't like Gradius would likely enjoy Gradius V.

I'd put Astro Boy somewhere between good and very good. It didn't have quite as much charm as Dynamite Headdy or Mischief Makers, it laid the dialog on pretty thick for a relatively short game that relies on replay value, and it wasn't as memorable overall, but it was a nice compromise between challenging action and casual platformer. Excellent spritework, audio (which is often a problem on GBA), and satisfying combat. It's also the only video game I've ever played that had a (very small) cameo of a character from my all-time favorite anime movies, for what that's worth. An excellent tribute to Astro Boy and Tezuka.

>>
it is a little overrated, but they make decent games
>>
>>319848245
I feel like its gimmick is a bit clumsily implemented, but the game as a whole is excellent regardless.
>>
>>319847584
When I think of beat em ups, I think of Golden Axe, River City Rampage, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, TMNT... I didn't really count Omega Factor or Viewtiful Joe. I always thought of them more as action platformers for some reason, more like Astal or Clockwork Knight. Maybe it's because Viewtiful Joe is so much more modern and full of gimmicks that I never really realized it was technically a beat em up that I liked.

As far as 3D goes, I've always thought of them as hack n slash, and they usually had more depth than things like Golden Axe with lots of dodging and learning moves and shit. The closest thing 3D gaming really has to what I'd consider a classic beat-em-up is God Hand, which specifically plays homage to the genre. Except that, even though it's more back to basics than, say, God of War, it still has a lot more depth than a lot of the classics it plays homage to.

It's the lack of depth in older beat-em-ups that made it hard to understand why people enjoyed them so much. Spam double-tap dash and do running attacks, get up close and throw, or spam jumping attacks and multi-button specials that eat your health, and just rinse and repeat forever, while having very little in the way of movement, blocking, and dodging, or even very many different forms of attack.
>>
>>319845774
>Guardian Heroes is the only good beat-em-up ever made
i dunno about that but goddamn was it great regardless

it's sad it doesn't get more praise, even compared to other treasure games
>>
>>319848245
Not bad, some seriously shit bosses though (soup guy, anyone?)

God tier OST, though.
>>
>>319848702
I think I understand.

Honestly you have to look deep a bit deeper there's beat-em-ups like Battle Circuit or Guardians which the kind of depth you might want though admittedly I'm a pretty big shril for those games.
>>
>>319848702
Nothing wrong with simplicity, arcade games in general are simple, short games where you try to survive as long as possible with just one quarter.

Stop playing Beat 'em Ups made before and/or of weaker quality than this fucking classic.

This right here, came before DnD, CaD, and AvP, and it's the exact moment the upper echelon of beat em ups went from good to GREAT. Nothing around the same year comes close to even touching this baby.

I don't know. I've played some pretty simple old shit. Three friends and Atari Warlords is still a good time for me. But beat-em-ups in particular, they've never been all that satisfying to play for me. Give me a platformer, pinball, pac-man, or a shooter, even galaga or fucking space invaders to kill a few minutes, I'll have fun, but somehow most beat-em-ups just don't do anything for me. They feel sluggish and lacking in much room for timing and finesse, and it feels like you have to really cheese things if you don't want to just trade hits all day and feed quarters.
>>
>>319849576

It's only standard because every game after it was a more or less a ripoff.

Most capcom beat 'em ups after Final Fight shared the same core gameplay with some gimmicks. The exceptions are D&D, Armored Warriors and King of Dragons.
>>
>>319842989
A longer version of Wario World.
>>
Dynamite Headdy no question. Hard as balls near the end, but damn I love it.

>>319849859
The Saturn had backup RAM carts, but they always died, too. I had two that didn't last very long before biting it. I wonder if there are any third party ones being made.
>>
>>319849769
>>
>>319845774
>They dropped the ball with Stretch Panic, Wario World, Silpheed, and a number of others.

I mean Wario World and Silpheed weren't their best games but dropped the ball? I think that is a bit harsh, compared to most of the trash that was coming out around those.
>>
>>319850359
A pro action replay 4-in-1 had memory backup as one of its functions.
>>
>>319849223
Problem with most beat 'em ups for me is they seem to have very little content stretched very thin (throw the same handful of basic enemies at you a million times with little variation), have next to no level design, enemies seem to have too much health and slapping them down and waiting for them to get up gets dull fast, and I feel like by design I have to be a cheap piece of shit and abuse poor AI and specific moves to do well.
Compare to something like Ghouls 'n Ghosts or R-Type that's more or less constantly throwing new things and new challenges at you every couple screens. Mechanically they are simple, but the content is not.
>>
>>319850463
I don't know I kinda didn't care for Silpheed much as well I preferred the original. It felt boring really and I like shooters and the weapon system didn't interest me very much either.

They're nothing like Platinum games.

>>
>>319850637
>I have to be a cheap piece of shit and abuse poor AI and specific moves to do well.
Maybe if you only played Double Dragon. In a good beat em up being a cheap piece of shit isn't enough to succeed.
>>
>>319842989

Probably Gunstar Heroes, then Sin & Punishment.
>>
>>319849673
McDonald's Treasureland Adventure always felt like a weird alpha version of Dynamite Headdy to me.
It's a solid game, but Dynamite Headdy is better in almost every way as far as I'm concerned.
I really like that space level though, with the low gravity and jumping around on all those asteroids and shit. Dynamite Headdy could have used a level like that.
>>
>>319849960
>>319850637
I guess beat'em up is just more focused on cooperative gameplay than other arcade genres, since it's basically crowd control. Many of the most popular games in the genre allowed 4+ players after all. My fondest memories of the genre are playing Streets of Rage, King of Dragons and Captain Commando with my friends.
