/v/ what are the downsides of getting this?
You'll get an overpriced, ugly piece of shit.
It's a PC pretending to be a console for some reason.
Why not just get a PC?
>>319835987
>>319836069
you're really paying for a brand name.
If you really want a PC/Steam Machine you can just build one more powerful for the price you'd spend to buy one.
There are plenty of guides
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Woan1RAUkE8
OP here, was asking because I've been offered one for $350.
For $300, it's not that bad. Cheap gaymen laptop specs.
Intel Core i3-4130T Dual-Core CPU
4GB DDR3L
500GB HDD
Alpha chassis with NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPU 2GB GDDR5
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 1x1
Windows 10
>>319836464
It's $305 from Dell after $45 rebate.
>>319835987
If you buy the Alpha its not a proper Steam Machine. You need to get the actual Alienware Steam Machine if you want all the advantages that brings with it.
Steam Gamepad with support for all games
Faster hard drive
SteamOS
Or you can just build your own Steam Machine and get a better system.
>>319836464
I'll be honest so you can ignore everyone else here
The alienware variations of the steam pc can't be upgraded. They are literally similar to apus like in consoles. It is a static piece of shit
If you absolutely must have a steam machine I'd suggest getting a syber. Good decent prices with fully upgradable components which is basically pop in and out.
At one point they were 200 dollars off bringing the price to 300 each
http://www.polygon.com/2015/11/23/9785832/syber-steam-machine-sale-valve
>>319836912
Which is worse, a 1GB GTX 750 1 GB GDDR5 or a 2GB GeForce 860M?
>>319836481
syber comparison
>>319836912
So these can be upgraded just like a regular PC?
I'm looking into buying a PC, but I'd have to take baby steps since I live in a 3rd world country.
>>319838184
>>319837132
Good question it's good and bad.
In terms of power the 860m in the alienware is literally fused with the motherboard meaning overclocking that shit might warp or damage the mobo over time. The GPU in the Alienware steam machine will not be a match to an external OC'd 750Ti if we're talking framerates. Even if they overclocked it which would be fucking stupid they still couldn't keep it at a low enough temperature to keep it running for more than a few hours.
However the 2gb 860m will have much better textures than the 750ti. In fact 1gb is pretty bad to be fucking honest.
If I was afraid of building a pc, I would buy a syber on the cheap, remove and sell the 750 ti and put in a better vidya card. If you get the alienware, you literally can't upgrade the gpu AT ALL and are stuck with a useless piece of shit in the future whereas the syber can even accept dx12 cards and higher end cpus since the framework is laid out.
Should I try and build a steam machine from this stuff /v/? It's just going to be receiving in home streaming from a much more powerful pc and doing word and youtube shit.
I have no idea what graphics card to get, I have an anetc 500w power supply lying around but i think i will need something better than that.
cpu: i7 920
motherboard: gigabyte ga-ex58-extreme
ram: corsair 6gb DDR3 1600 Timing 7-7-7-20 (i'd really like to find another 6gb set of this and run 12gb but it's hard to find used)
hdd: some ssd i have lying around
>>319838184
Only a few. I know the syber one can. The alienware models all have a mobile type gpu meaning it's fused to the mobo which can never be upgraded and thus makes it bad.
>>319839682
If that's all you're using it for you won't need a very powerful graphics card.
>>319835987
you're getting a laptop board in shiny case with leds
>>319838184
>>319838406
I went with a SilverStone Raven RVZ01B because while slim, you still can put regular and beefier parts in there.
>>319839682
You mean build a pc? Why are you calling it a steam machine if you're building the parts?
Your cpu is good just oc that shit to 4ghz or 3.8 if you can't hit 4
500w is good enough maybe
ssd is good
You're pretty much fucking set for a normal pc.
If you just add in a 300 dollar video card you would be running shit on high/ultra at 50-60 fps most likely.
>>319839682
>i7
Get an i3 at most
>>319835987
they've got dual core processors and many games play like shit on dual cores or outright dont work on them
>>319837493
That's the same case as >>319839959.
>>319836912
>tfw want a syber pc just for the pretty lights and case
Do they sell the case by itself? I'd rather put my own parts in them
>>319839682
>It's just going to be receiving in home streaming from a much more powerful pc
you're doing it backwards, buy a cheap gpu and some hdds and hook it up to a receiver/tv and you got yourself a central fileserver that doubles as an htpc among numerous other things.
>>319839682
I stream from my PC to my tablet with a Z7375 CPU. An i3 is already much more powerful, an i5 is throwing money away. i7 shouldn't even be a consideration.
>>319840582

>>319840780
But does it have the lights and white finish as in

>>319839994
>>319840649

Going out on a limb here and assuming that he already has those parts laying around.
>>319836328
>build
still builds computers to save money like a jew
>>319840880
Of course he has. Those are some old ass parts. No way anyone would consider buying them now.
Asked for this as a gift and have been enjoying a lot lately, how is it by average standards?
>>319841079
The i7 920 is still fucking kicking m80 at 1200p at least for 60 fps. Dx12 might extend it's life even more.
>>319841097
Seems good. How's Japan.
Also, get uBlock Origin instead of ABP.
>>319841097
It's weaker than a GTX 750 Ti. But the CPU is probably breddy gud. Definitely being bottlenecked by a weak GPU.
Probably could have built something like >>319839959 for the same cost.
>>319841203
And this is from Sandy Bridge.
>>319841309I wanted to be able to have it be portable, otherwise I would've tried building
>>319836481
NVIDIA GeForce GTX what
>>319841483
See >>319837493 same case and yeah it's portable (even comes with a carry bag).
Problem here is that you have sacrificed GPU power for a bit more portability when you could have built a beast gaming desktop and still have money left over for a tablet to do your funposting on /v/ on the go.
>>319839959
>>319841695
My GTX 980 cost me $250 USD. Saved a bit on that.
>>319841951
>>319842162
So you got a cheap laptop instead. Hope it lasts more than 6 months.
>>319840703
only using the i7 920 for a second machine because i have it lying around
>>319840880
yep
>>319840649
this will be a second pc, i already have a more powerful gaming pc but i use this at the other end of my house to do work on and other stuff, so it only needs to receive steam in home streaming.
>>319839985
yeah it is just another pc but it needs to be powerful enough to receive steam in home streaming and watch 1080p etc. I think I might try and get a second hand video card for around $200 but then I will need to get a new psu as that 500w doesn't support many of the newer cards.
>>319842162
how do you even find them that low
I always consider doing a mini ITX build since I like the small form factor, but I don't really take my computer anywhere so it seems pointless.
>>319844629
Idk I do it so in case shit goes down one day and I need to bug out I grab the shit dump it in my car and floor it
Use the i5 with 12gb of ram and ssd. Not to bad. Got a good deal on it and i take it to work and play on slow days. No sound card so youll have to get an adapter. Played mgs5 on high, fallout 4 on medium gettin 50~60 fps. Not to bad if you can get it for under 400. But retail they ask for like 800 for the i5 version which is absolutely ridiculous. Everything but the gpu is replaceable.
