I'm pretty sure 4 the max is 99 and you'll be lvl 65. 7 You'll level up pretty fast, i mean i was lvl 75 without grinding but yea the endboss was a joke, but ruby and emerald are still hard at 99, i don't remember if 8 had levels for your characters, i think it was based all on junctions and the summons had levels. 9 also you'll be 60-70 easy, 10 doesn't have levels, 11 you'll be max level to do max level content, 12 i've never actually played but the ds version you'll need to be 99 for the endboss, 13 doesn't have levels, 13-2 you'll be lvl 99 for most roles by the end easily.

the word autism gets thrown around a lot, but simply assuming you're expected by the designer of the game to max out numbers inside a computer might represent a misunderstanding on your part

Depends, trails in the sky has soft caps where while the game engine doesn't have any real hard cap beyond 150 iirc (it might just be 3rd where that's the case and it's only 100 in FC and SC) but after a certain point you just start getting 1 xp from every mob at about 2 levels over where they intend for you to be and that includes the end of the game.

The only thing that comes to mind where the final boss was a major difficulty spike compared to everything leading up to it was Final Fantasy V, but if you were using the job system like you were supposed to you could still deal with him just fine.

FFX was like that for me. I didn't grind a single bit and just played the game and when I got to that final Seymour and the Jecht chest sword fight, I was getting railed with reckless abandon. Finally I just gave up and went grinding and then it was a cake walk.

I feel like the spike in FFX started a while before the final boss though. Enemies start to outpace the party around the Calm Lands on a normal playthrough as their damage/health/abilities suddenly scale up a lot, and random encounters around that point in the game start to take forever if you're not prepared.

The difficulty/level curve is still dumb (and I'm really not a fan of FFX to begin with), but it's not like the final boss just suddenly blindsides you when everything before it was easy. There's a clear ramp up to it.
