Honestly, I have a hard time picking up a character if I don't have any attachment to him/her at this point. Villager looks really cool and interesting, but I just can't bring myself to touch him considering that I don't give a damn about AC.
Although I don't really have much of a problem with people playing characters whose games they haven't played, as long as it brings them to check them out eventually. Marth and Roy introduced me to one of my favorite series, and since EB was before my time, playing Ness helped me with that as well.
