I try to make it as annoying as possible for invaders. I would also invade people, start killing shit in their world to gain their trust. I would wait until there was a cliff or a bad situation I could put them before I did anything.

I had a lot more fun with forest protectors, bellbongs, duals (dragon and red sign), and royal rat guards. I have no real explanation for why invaders would be like this. My only suspicion is that

People either cheat or do runs while retaining a low Soul Level to get the best gear, then return to repeatedly invade the Undead Burg (the area which lots of low level/geared people will inevitably be funneled into).
