Honestly i think this is a great idea for a controller. I've always had this idea in the back of my mind and nintendo is really the only company that can 'do' handheld devices right for the most part.
I was pretty judgemental on the Wii U pad my self when it had first came out, But when i actually had played with the thing and used it for videogames i feel like they've actually raised the bar of what a videogame controller is suppose to be about.
If you look at how they are deciding to do everything for the NX from a tactical viewpoint they are pretty much in a sweet spot to do just about anything they want at this point. Especially with Kimishima at the helm i think we might be seeing a greater horizon with nintendo than ever before.

You know, it's a neat idea, but I just don't know how big it's going to be.
Stuff like general quality of life gameflow improvements like Xenoblade Chronicles X throwing the map with touch-to-teleport and the resource manager and all the multiplayer social crap onto the touch screen is great but what would be the point of a virtual button in an action-y game like Mario Kart? Mario Kart could be done with a Wiimote, you should never be taking your eyes off the screen, especially to press a button.
I just hope they go all in this time instead of just doing the bare minimum in the hopes of not totally compromising off-TV play or accessory controllers(e.g. Wiimotes, Wii U Pro) for single player titles.
Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Mario platformers, these games are designed with simple controls in mind. But more mechanically complex things like Zelda, Metroid, RPGs like Xenoblade I think could benefit from this, even if it's just a general convenience like the things they did for the 3DS remakes of the N64 Zeldas.

Just got a WiiU and tend to prefer Nintendo, but even this patent and what we've seen so far of it boggles my mind. A new controller at this point should be intuitive for players to pick up. It's like when you were a kid and played your first console, you pressed each button in the game to see what it did. The Wii's success was because of the controller's intuitive design (swing wiimote = tennis racket swings the same way, turn sideways = old NES/SNES fans know what to do). The WiiU confuses the shit out of consumers because they don't know how to balance between watching the tv screen and looking at the gamepad at first glance and no doubt this controller will be the same. Also it always seemed risky to have a screen on your controller imo since people have a tendency to abuse or drop them.

If you're playing a console game, you tend to hold the console at a lower angle which would have result in tilting your neck even slightly to look up at the screen and down at the console. I've seen this confusion happening to people who demo the WiiU at Gamestop and Target. There's a slight learning curve to it, but in terms of product design and marketing this small second of confusion can hurt sales.
