Ryu's light/heavy system should be added to every character for 5mash. Would be a nice way to make 5mash a actual development on the series as well as allowing for more combos. plus Ryu is fun as fuck to play

Gameplay-wise, I hope they add these to the next Smash:

Also for Ryu, I hope they remove the command inputs on the 'normal' button and keep them on the 'special' button only, since it's way too easy to do something you didn't mean to do.

I was thinking a little while ago about Smash and grapplers, how some of the heavies were practically Smash's equivalent to traditional fighting game grapplers, and what Sakurai could do to make them stand out more. Then I realize: true command grabs.

Hell fucking yes. You could even give them command grabs tied to the grab button in addition to the special button.

I never really liked the idea of giving DK a projectile of sorts because Sakurai designed him as a close ranged brawler type of character, like Zangief. It'd be like if Haggar had a shotgun in MVC3 or something.

Same here. I think the problem with this is that in any other "traditional" fighting game with Ryu he always fixes himeslf to automatically face the opponent, where as he doesn't do this in Smash, thus making it easier to accidentally throw a move you didn't want to when Smash is a lot more varied in moves and aerial compared to other games that are more stiff and grounded. Ryu's fun to play just to try out and land a Shoryuken or two but he quickly becomes just frustrating to play unless you really master his technicality.

The whole reason why Smash has been so successful is because it's easy to pick up and play.

Not implying that Ryu is too complex for the average scrub, but simplicity is what sells this game, and I don't think as many people would have fun if every character had Ryu commands.

As much as we hate the man for it, Hackurai wants his game to be as accessible as possible for the average scrub/casual. From a design philosophy, getting more and more complex/technical will appeal to smaller and smaller dedicated groups of players ultimately turn off newcomers with a high skill ceiling.

To be honest, I'd love for inputs like Ryu has and if anything the way light/heavy attacks work here are the best middle ground for newcomers between stuff like Smash and 6-button fighters.

However I'm certain that the competitive audience is very much a small-scale consideration in Nintendo's and Sakurai's mind in terms of sales and design, outside of game rebalances. Even then it's more from FG trends than anything else I presume.

You can. You can cr.lk>cr.lk>mp>dp for a good amount of damage. Most moves can be followed up by input dp. Kills at pretty low percentages as well. Plus FADC gives you advanced movement opt options against zoning characters, and input tatsu can actually dodge projectiles if timed right.
