I worked for gamestop for a bit. There are literally hundreds of games for consoles and PC on the shelves. That's not even mentioning stuff like controllers, adapters and other shit like Amiibos. We don't play or know them all. If you're lucky, the customer is going to ask for one of the popular game of the month, CoD or Fallout. If not, they'll ask for something vague like "a game where I can fight girls until they get naked". I'm not even sure where I would look for that.
We don't play every game and we're not expected to. If you ask for a new release, we're usually up to date on that, but if you ask for something more obscure, we won't know unless you ask for it specifically.
In the end of the day, we're just the people who you give money to the get your dirty naked ninja fighting game or CoD, maybe even both.

As an employee of Gamestop I can say that the store I work for isn't as pushy. We do push season passes and gpg's when it's midnight launches for games but usually we don't do stuff that really makes the customer feel pressured. We get more regulars for it. I think it is all dependent on the people that work at your gamestop. There is a guy that works at the one in my town that is a pretty cool guy. I see him every now and again when I am getting a PS4 exclusive and we usually have a talk about upcoming games and what we have liked recently. I think he is the manager, so he may know his shit better than the average gamestop employee but still. I work at a store that has a small games section that we keep as a way for people to spend their reward points.
Because I am one of the only guys in the store i am the one that gets asked about all things tech related. I can easily convince people to buy the wrong things but I am not a sociopath so I give them facts and answer questions.
Not too long ago there was a single mom who had her teen daughter with her and she was going to drop $500 which she couldn't really afford just to keep her daughter happy. Initially the daughter wanted an XBO with Forza for no particular reason and after she answered a few questions it was clear what she actually wanted to do was have a console so she could play with her friends and it turned out her friends exclusively had PS4 and the game they were playing at the time was GTAV so eventually that is what they got.
There is something very disturbing about people who choose to work at a job they hate and choose to take out their frustrations on their customers.
