You can advance time by going to an inn, but you're better off just running around finding something else to do.

Anyway, just started playing, and I'm already being way more time efficient than I was a couple years ago. About to end Day 1, already have all the Dead Dunes Cactuar statues activated, pulled some useful stuff off enemies, like Mediguard, and I have about 30 Ruins to use as enhancement fodder.
The story may be ass, but its a much more fun game than the previous installments

The only thing you can do storywise on Day 1 is gather the evidence, present it to the guy, and follow the cultists to the phonebooth. Once that's out of the way, use whatever remaining time you have left to run to the south station and hit up the other areas via train to buy some outfits and/or explore.
The Wildlands encampment has some great outfits, like the Ignition and Woodlands Walker which have Fire 2+ and Aero 2+, respectively. Dead Dunes has an amazing outfit called Passion Rouge right outside the station you can buy which offers Status resistance, Deshell 2 and Deprotect 2. Highly recommend at least grabbing that one.
Also, the bird dudes in the desert (Sahagin?) can drop Imperil, which makes your life tremendously easier.
If you feel like you're wasting precious time, don't. You have 7+ days to get everything done (up to 13) but its possible to do it all in 3.

the item collecting ones can wait, since you can turn those in at the billboard whenever. The doll one can be finished right away as well. (Its sitting on some boxes near the shops east of the station).
There are a couple others you can get done on Day 1 as well I believe, but nothing serious or time consuming that you can always do later on when you're in the area. I just went ahead and started doing the Dead Dunes story stuff because I'm familiar with the area. Day 1 is meant to introduce you to the time mechanic, so its supposed to be over quickly. Proper chronostasis management can seriously drag out the timer though, even at the start of the game.
Don't stress out about getting everything done, though. It's impossible to do every sidequest in a single playthough, so if a few things get missed, that's just a little more cleanup for NG+.

Don't use steelguard for instant blocking.
Use Guard or Heavy Guard instead.
Steelguard is more suited for defending against a barrage of attacks by multiple enemies.
And you CAN nullify the damage of his air ball with a perfect block if you use guard, and it raises his stagger bar quite a bit too.
You can also block each separate instance of his Aerora if you're good enough and have the necessary atb.
But not with steelguard. I didn't use it much because I would aoe spam groups to death, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't work like Guard when blocking, as in you will always take some damage.
I'm not sure why you're using steelguard against a lone enemy though.

this game is so bland, every npc feels dead and the story in itself is mediocre at best. the combat can be fun sometimes, but most of the time you kill waves of trash button mashing because the strategy is always the same. they improved on the optizimation but its still very bad, for a game with this level of visiuals there shouldnt be any fps drops on a system like mine. i give it a 4 out of 10 if youre a hardcore ff fan maybe its a 6, also for some reason the first ff13 looked better than this one?
