Unless you can punch hard enough to break brick walls or jump high enough to stomp them, you couldn't beat a Goomba. Mario can beat them easily because he's awesome, but they're actually somewhat dangerous.

Mario shatters brick by jumping on both the rise and fall, the force exerted by his legs is incredible. On the flipside, a Goomba is like 40% mouth and causes damage enough to kill on contact.
