Not OP but I liked the first one more, GlaDos wasn't funny anymore and I fucking hated Weathley. Also, the sections between levels felt pointless since all you had to do was find the white space.

You all have shit taste. Portal 2 will never live up to the breathtaking atmosphere of the original. Portal 2 just seems so... bland. It doesn't have the same gritty/fun blend that the original had, it's just all fun, and desu that's not as good
The only thing I prefer in Portal 1 over Portal 2 is the OST

gotta agree with you there. i mean portal 2 has a lot of individual components which are better, but i prefer the feeling of portal 1. it wasn't constantly trying to be funny with some wacky but mostly annoying characters. portal 2's fun, but it feels superficial because it does most stuff just to be funny or weird

Portal
>Every surface is portalable until the very end
>You have to figure out your own way through the puzzles
>game is entirely devoted to puzzles while Glados mocks you between them
>Short and sweet with the focus on the core mechanics the entire time
>writing is consistent with the theme and the cake is a lie is just out of the way scrawling to be ignored
Portal 2
>Entire walls of nothing you can only place your portals where the devs intend
>Trys to shove in a story about Glados and Wheatley as if it makes any difference which voice is mocking you between puzzles
>Drags on but never picks up in difficulty to reflect it
>lol lemons, Glados is a potato!, isn't it funny how Wheatley makes shitty puzzles, no? Well get used to it because you'll be seeing it until the end of the game.
The problem with Portal 2 is that explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog: neither one survives the process. Aperture Science should never have had a backstory, and any attempt to give it one was nonstop cringe. Which is really a shame, because I generally like JK Simmons and Stephen Merchant.
All these bad opinions. Portal 2 was great up until everything having to do with Wheatley. Granted, my favorite part was the beginning, up until Wheatley unlocks the maintenance area.
Portal 2 mechanically was great. It had a few problems though.
The worst was that they tried too damn hard to make it funny. Portal had moments of dry humor throughout but never enough to be a distraction. The game always came first. Also the fact that the world was so alien, so cold and depressing yet with just a hint of something terribly wrong. It was just you and a malevolent AI locked in a facility together.
Meanwhile Portal 2 had more characters, and most of them just would not shut the fuck up. Wheatley is funny for a few minutes until you realize he just won't. stop. talking. The "fast-talking eccentric British man" schtick gets old fast (which is coincidentally why Yahtzee bores me).
And really, could ANY sequel ever hope to capture the same magic that Portal had? It was so unexpected and out of the blue, I mean for a while the only way you could get it was in the Orange Box. Now that we've all seen it we simply can't be surprised by it.

>Slightly weird at times, but overall believable.
>Feels like it takes place in the same universe as Half-Life.
>lil wacky but manages to be tame enough
>humor is very dry
>GLaDOS is implied to be suicidal throughout the game and is essentially forcing you into a situation to where you are going to kill her. shit ton of symbolism with her design as looking like an upside down woman in bondage
>whole game has a mid 90s soulless corporate feel
>the whole game is claustrophobic, intentionally making you feel like a trapped labrat, further adding to the thematic elements of the game
>most surfaces are portalable and flinging is a major mechanic
>game is succinct and to the point, never feels like it overstays it's welcome

>"you know those mechanics we built on in the first game, like energy pellets, light rails, and flinging? We threw them out the window to add simplified versions of those mechanics!!"
>lasers are just energy pellets for the impatient
>light platforms are just light rails for the impatient
>the gels and the aerial faith plates are just flinging and movement physics for the impatient
>literally almost no puzzles actually involve the physics of moving in and out of portals like an actual test in Aperture Science would
>GLaDOS symbolism and subtlety is gone, and now she looks like some weird upside down dinosaur instead.
>entire aesthetic changed completely
>weird hamfisted old aperture section that feels really out of place
>honestly just about fucking everything feels out of place
>claustrophobic corridors are gone now, I hope you like impossibly big caves and LE EPIC setpieces.
>retcons a shit of Portal 1 lore, from the BBS systems to the Cave Johnson texts (which only get briefly mentioned in the PTI)
>no longer feels like it could fit in Half-Life's universe
>please don't tell me you can imagine the wacky antics of Wheatley and the Co-Op bots in the same universe as the oppressive combine regime.
in the end they're both good games, but dear god is Portal 2 just a butchered casualized version of Portal 1. Anyone who says otherwise is a faggot who can't think for themselves and assumes new = better.
Portal 1 was a tech demo with a short game attached to the end of it. Portal 2 was a full game.

I feel like people forget how fucking easy Portal 1's puzzles were and how god damn short it was

>>319746678
Quality > Quantity
Sure, I love tutorials 6 hours into the game and puzzles that solve themselves because theres only 4 patches of white wall. Also, no challenge nor advanced maps.
You mean huge sections in wich you have to search for a single white tiles in order to advance?
Portal 2 is wake up GlaDos, Wheatley takes control, fuck Weatley up. It's too wacky to be taken seriously as a part of HL lore and drags for too long, I would preferred more proper puzzles instead of their half assed try of plot.
>>319747395
All the puzzles in 1 were easy as shit though. And 2 had some quality stuff in it too, I thought the coop puzzles were pretty good.
Kooky old man would have been way better than the disgruntled asshole we got.
>>319747813

>>319745309
I agree with just about everything, but I like the light bridges, lasers, gels, and even sort of the excursion tunnels.
Overall they're weak puzzle pieces, but the sound design is fantastic.
I also liked the big caves and behind the scenes stuff, but they definitely went too far in some ways.
Having Johnson voice over what could have been an interesting location sort of ruined it.
>walk into some official office area, very fancy
>"whoa what did this place use to be?"
>"KRSHHHHHHT I'M CAVE JOHNSON AND HERE'S WHAT THIS PLACE WAS. YELLING! MEMES!"

What? Portal 2 literally showed you the bay that the Borealis used to be in confirming that the two series are directly related.
>>319749747
They were obviously trying to replicate the whole "the cake is a lie" thing.
Portal > Portal 2, but Portal 2 still holds up on its own.
Particularly, 2 had
>JK motherfucking Simmons
>better soundtrack
>objectively more mechanics
That being said, the first one was overall much tighter, which is why it's so great in my opinion. You learn mechanics in a way that's intuitive, builds on itself nicely, and doesn't drag at all, leading to a culmination of this in the last few tests, and some linear, exploration breathing room leading up to the final fight.
2 simply had too many breaks in the game that lasted for too long, and while the length and the additional content was nice, continuing to implement new mechanics that late in the game shattered the forward momentum.
I could go on about not liking the humor or the aesthetics as much, but the structure is really the main problem.
>>319750246
But they weren't.
>Erik Wolpaw: if you thought you were sick of the memes, I was sick of it way ahead of you
Quit all this stretching, Valve doesn't go out their way to make new memes. Wolpaw said you can't plan for shit to be a meme or else it looks forced
>>319739809
Oh fuck off. I felt that feeling but amplified in the second game. You have no argument other then your made of "soul factor".
I wonder why you would pretend Portal 1 is better................ oh yeah because Portal 2 is more popular
>>319750581
So the lemon thing is supposed to be considered a serious monologue? A modern-day Shakespearean soliloquy?
>>319750783
>it must be serious or else they're trying to make a new meme
I guess the whole game is a meme, is this the ultimate meme game?
>>319742212
>Portal 3
I always had a cool concept for Portal 3.
Chell escaped from the facility in the second game, but the facility is still there and working.
So Chell tells people about it and some higher ups decide the place is too dangerous to keep up and running.
You're a military squad that infiltrates the place, you even have a gun. But never get to actually shoot it, its just to poke fun at shooters. You quickly lose it and find a portal gun, you 2-3 squad members get split up from you.... and the testing begins.
Story could go many directions from there, but whatever the plot twists are, it ends in the destruction of the facility and the mission being a success. Ending the Portal trilogy.
>>319750942
There's really only comedy or drama
Don't tell me you actually found that funny?
