Those starting locations really did give you the best feeling. The world felt small and you wanted to explore every inch of it. The npc were unique and you actually paid attention to what they were saying.

I don't get why they think they need to market this game exclusively to small children, a game more in line tonally with Nausicaa or Castle in the Sky would be GOAT and still have broad appeal

Err, actually that's not true. In the majority of cases mothers are better parents. The problem is that most of the time =/= all of the time and many many mothers who are extremely uncaring and/or incompetent still end up winning the right to "take care" of the child.
Secondly, having hormones that make you feel like you are a better parent doesn't make you a better parent.
