Where did these fucking guys come from lately?

Years ago no one gave a fuck, SS2 was the hottest shit and no one bothered with the first game. Now there's these fucking proto-hipsters claiming it's way better than SS2.

I applaud you, but what's next? In a few years, will there be people claiming that Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 are the best games ever and that System Shock doesn't even compare? I'm looking forward to it.
>>
>>319735092
You mad it doesn't have FPS controls, babby?

True ranking:

System Shock > Deus Ex > SS2 > Human Revolution > Invisible War > Bioshock > Bioshock 2 >>>>>> Infinite
>>
>>319740109

Does Deus Ex really fit into this comparison, they're pretty different from the rest

Also I really need to get around to playing SS1
>>
>>319736908
That's because they actually made System Shock 1 playable on a modern computer instead of having to set up shitty DOS-BOX, and now people are beginning to realize how much better it is compared to SS2.
>>
>>319736908

System Shock 1 is a good game, though. It's not as pretty as BioShock Infinite, that is, it's a fucking DOS game from 1994, but that is the only thing Infinite has over SS1. And the voice acting, I guess.

Both System Shocks are great, both are worth playing. Also, there's a timer on the teaser site now: http://www.othersidetease.com/gs99yy.php

>>319741114

System Shock 2 is already a fantastic game, but it is definitely a step-down from the mechanical depth of SS1 which made it one of the best cyberpunk-themed games ever released. They did a fine job trying to fill in the shoes of the innovations they made in SS1 nonetheless.
>>
>>319741114
>That's because they actually made System Shock 1 playable on a modern computer instead of having to set up shitty DOS-BOX
What? When? I want to play this. Is the framerate better than the DOSBox emulation? Because it always felt really choppy regardless of how many cycles I threw at it.
>>

September 22nd of this year.

SS1 Enhanced Edition came along bringing the game as an actual native Windows game now, and it adds mouselook, some higher resolutions, custom binds, and some bugfixes.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/410710/
http://www.gog.com/game/system_shock_enhanced_edition
>>
>>319741543
And yes the framerate should be better. I personally haven't played it but most games that came from DOS and ported to native Windows usually got better performance.
>>
>>319741715

SS1 Enhanced was already a thing before they put it on Steam, all they did was buy the rights and put the free mod behind a paywall
>>

does anyone know where I can get system shock for the ios? steam currently sells it for windows but I want to play it on my mac. is there a version for it or a way to still play it? i hear theres an enhanced edition on steam.
>>
>>319742296
The one you saw on steam IS the enhanced edition.

It's not on Mac right now, I think you can play the original version through emulation although it kinda sucks.

Not him but I have an i5 4670k and a 970 and SS1 never felt like it had decent performance regardless of how I set up DOSBox. Same with other games. It's a limitation of the emulation, not how good your system is.
>>
>>319742386
Man, I really need to try the enhaced edition. The only time I finished SS1 was aeons ago on DosBox without sound (I couldn't get it to work fine). Still the most impressive game I have played considering how old it is.

We'll just have to wait and see. While individual the developers have great histories, the material they've shown about their new project is underwhelming. But, it is not even close to being done and they've been insistent on letting people see "how the sausage is made" (so basically BUT IT'S A PRE-PRE-ALPHA!).

At the very least, the things they've said about their intentions for it show they still understand what made the old games great unlike, say, the Thi4f devs, and they seem enthusiastic about getting back to work on these series that some of them used to work on. But it's entirely possible they'll botch the execution.
>>
>>319743963
Bloodlines never really struck me as an immersive sim.

>>319744032
I love Thief and what I've played of SS1 but I never could get into Deus Ex. I just didn't find it all that much fun though I played quite a bit of it.

SS2 >>>>> SS1 on map design alone, even if you ignore the slew of other improvements
>>
>Bioshock 2>1

Holy shit fuck off. Marginally improving the gameplay to be a little bit less clunky doesn't make up for the downgraded everything else and the horrid multiplayer.
>>
>>319743910
More emergence within the gameplay systems, it's the logical extension of what UU was trying to do just within a spy thriller storyline contained within a cyberpunk world. It's by far my favourite game
>>
>>319744152
its literally a dungeon crawler in space

>>319744137
>I love Thief and what I've played of SS1 but I never could get into Deus Ex. I just didn't find it all that much fun though I played quite a bit of it.

How were you playing it? Some people get a little bit too into the min/maxing, which can suck the joy out a little bit. If you just role-play as a character archetype rather than as an RPG build it's a lot more fun, imho. Also playing on Realistic is absolutely essential, although I would guess you already were. How far did you get the first time?
>>
>>319744173
BS2 has a cleverer story than BS1 if you ask me. Also more people are going to identify with a polemic against Socialism than Objectivism, especially on this site.
>>
>>319744324
Not sure how I was playing it. I wasn't really going for anything in particular. Just upgrading stuff as I went along. And I think I quit right before I got to the ship where you needed to plant explosives on.

I'm not one of those people that get autistically into getting the perfect build.

>People always complaining about System Shock 2's fast music 'ruining the mood', like it's supposed to be fucking Amnesia or something.

I always thought it kept a good tempo with the hectic fights and monsters chasing you with lead pipes. It's not a slow game.
>>
>>319744152

>>
>>319744521
>People always complaining about System Shock 2's fast music 'ruining the mood'

Really? I think Eric Brosius is a genius, personally. Him and Alex Brandon define these sorts of games.
>>
>>319744521

I sneaked around a lot. It's not like there was a lot of fast music, most of it was spooky ambience
>>
OP here, I'm a huge faggot.
>>
>>319743729
System Shock is not even supposed to be an RPG, it is an FPS with level design like a dungeon crawler. And it was simple compared to SS2's mess of magical cybernetic modules, mostly useless psi abilities, and totally unbalanced skills.

Be honest, have you played System Shock? Did you make it past MedSci?
>>
Bioshock Infinite = System Shock 2 > Bioshock > Bioshock 2. Never bothered with System Shock 1.

Bioshock really wanted to be System Shock 3 but it didn't work as either a horror game or an RPG. It was just too dumbed down to be either of those things and not scary at all. And the Big Daddy/Little Sister stuff was just a bust.

Bioshock 2 was a piece of trash that's developers actually believed that everybody loved that godawful escort mission at the end of Bioshock.

Now Infinite, that game didn't try to be either a horror game nor an RPG, and that's why it's so good. It wanted to be an action game, and ended up the best, most complex first-person shooter of its generation. Certainly, Infinite has the best gameplay, story and characters in the series.

Bioshock Infinite is to cinematic first-person action games as System Shock 2 is to first-person role playing game hybrids.
