They did literally everything wrong. I own a Wii U and like it because Bayo 2/Wonderful 101 are God-tier and I had a blast with 3DW, MK8, and MH3U, but it's dead in the water and I'll be extremely surprised if it ever recovers. Even as someone who owns one there are only like three more games coming out on it that I'm ever going to buy - Star Fox, KOWASHITAI maybe, and Zelda U if it isn't cross-gen.
Barring some huge game announcements (which won't happen because of aforementioned phasing out support in the leadup to the NX) there's no helping it. Nintendo made some 5th/6th gen Sega tier fuckups when it came to selling this console.

The only game worth my time on the Wii U is the new Xenoblade game. I am not going to pay 300+ dollars for one game.
Yes, there are other good games on the Wii U besides Xenoblade, but I'm twenty-eight years old and another Mario game holds no value to me personally.
That said, I also think the concept of consoles just doesn't make any sense if you're an adult who can operate and game on a PC.
You have no idea how tempting a WiiU is for me. I really want to play Splatoon and feel I'd enjoy it a lot. And I really enjoy fighting games, so it'd be nice to have smash, although I probably wouldn't get into it as hardcore as I do other fighting games.
But those are the only two games I want. And paying $250 for what amounts to two games is pretty damn expensive, even if they turn out to be the best games on the planet, which they probably won't. Still, I have a ton of money, so it isn't like $250 is a dent in my savings or anything (currently saving up for a BMW)
The thing that makes me not rush out right now and buy a wii u is the fact that I remember that I'd also have to buy $35-50 worth of stupid amiibos on top of that, and that's if the store has them in stock. Fuck that shit.

Not when you take into account all the peripherals, the external HDD you'll need because what's included is only 32GB, and the fact that their games are full fucking price YEARS after launch. That, and the console itself has last gen specs being sold barely under current gen prices.
When you take all of this into consideration, the Wii U is an absolutely horrible value, and even dumb consumers are smart enough to see that.

I'm a bit of a completionist. Even if it is insubstantial, and even if I'll never wear any cosmetic items, it still feels right to have them. Especially for whatever I would main in smash, or the squid boy, you know, those characters I would play. But the fact that I have to go on some fuckin' treasure hunt to find them, or pay inflated prices on ebay, it is just a huge turn-off. Especially if you want to start adding that into the cost of an already-overpriced (for me) system, it just doesn't bring a lot of value to the equation.
Because Nintendo doesn't sell their game tablets separately. You have to get scalped from eBay or Amazon/etc from people trying to get their money back from when their Wii Us broke down/etc.
Nintendo also charges the around same cost of the secondhand tablets to diagnose and repair your tablet if you break it.
