Having replayed this game recently, I was amused by how over the top and silly the racism in this game is.

It's usually between distinct races (elves vs furries, vs dwarves vs humans), but there are games that deal, at least, with regional racism like Tales of Symphonia 2 and the Xillia games.
That's about as close to skin color racism I've seen in a JRPG. I don't doubt that there's a JRPG where skin color is a point of racism, but I can't recall one.

It's great, but the 1st act's story (of 3) seems rather shitty and generic. But there's a massive twist and the rest of the game is addicting (beyond the few annoying dungeons) Combat also takes a while to get interesting.
60fps in everywhere but on the world map is also nice. There's one massive performance hit in a snowy town on emulator though. Only have to go there twice if I recall.

That's honestly one of my favorite things about the game. I was a dumb kid when I played it for the first time and had basically zero experience with JRPGs. I'm sure most people probably saw a lot of it coming from a mile away, but I legitimately thought the Tower of Salvation was going to be the end of the game (I guess I forgot there was a second disc). I was fucking amazed when it just kept going and going.

Should be noted that only the Gamecube version has 60FPS, although I'm not sure if you could do that on the PS2 version if you emulate it.

They are technically in the same world but it's pretty irrelevant because they're so far apart. They basically just share some references and locations, and there are some thematic similarities between them. Personally I started the series with Symphonia and didn't play Phantasia until a while later, but either way is fine really.
Also play Phantasia on PS1, not SNES. It has significantly better gameplay. Technically the PSP version is the best but the fan translation isn't done yet.

Yeah, but the additional stuff isn't super important and the framerate is better on Gamecube.
The PS3 version is based on the PS2 version and has all that content if you want to play that, although it still annoyingly has the framerate cap from PS2. That version is also being ported to PC in early 2016.

The earlier Tales games were equally silly up until this one, and I can only assume it continued since it was the last one I played. The only one that stood out to me was some argument between the main bad and the heroes where the heroes did such a bad job justifying their opposition to his plan that it made him look reasonable even though they were trying to set him up a crazy guy.

If you mean Witcher universe, then yes and no. Elves are not the alien, as in, the elves you meet are not. They're native and humans are the aliens. But then the Wild Hunt are aliens from a dimension where they killed off the humans instead of slowly dying out and go into Geralt's world (as their only bridge) to capture humans to use as sport in their world.
So, it's elves, invaded by alien humans, in turn invaded by alien elves.

I have the PS3 version and I strongly prefered just emulating it instead because the PS3 version runs at 30fps and looks like a jaggy mess. The dual audio and extra costumes and stuff is alright though, so it's a matter of taste I guess. 60fps and better image quality wins out over the extra content in the PS3 version for me.

A lot of people prefer one game or another over it for some niche reason, which is fair, but those answers are across the board. Because of this, Vesperia may not be unanimously the "top" Tales game, but its certainly the one that almost the entire fanbase can agree was "pretty fucking great"- every other game seems to be reasonably divisive, whereas people who don't like Vesperia aren't too common.

With only Tales of Symphonia as my example, I'd say not really. Playing with a guide is only really needed wen you're trying to get everything in the game. Otherwise, you'll probably like the game better if you go guide-less the first time through and just explore, then use a guide in New Game+ to get extras.
I'd imagine it's mostly the same with the other games. So, whether it's better depends on what you want at the moment.

Speaking of Emil's VA, it's strange, but it seemed like Johnny Yong Bosch was more or less growing into the role. Initially, normal (cowardly) Emil was too whiny and it seemed like Johnny was straining himself to maintain that high-pitched voice.
I don't know if I just got used to it or if it had something to do with normal-Emil's character development, but normal-Emil started to actually sound decent as the game went on. He always sounded fine when they let Johnny use his normal or gruff voice.

Now that you mention it, yeah, that is pretty close, especially since (as far as I can remember) the only thing different about the Darcsens was their hair color. I wonder if the race name would have been kept if they were all tan instead.
