Who is the best game writer? Is there such a thing as a well written story in video games?
>>
Sheldon Pacotti and Hideo Kojima
>>
>>319690863
would you?
>>
>>319690974
>Sheldon Pacotti
Wasn't deus ex a fluke, since the second was complete shit? And then he never wrote again?
>>
>>319690863
None that any sane person would try to compare to the great literary works.
>>
>>319691460
its that kind of mentality that stops gaming from reaching its full potential

Whoever wrote Hotel Dusk

Yes, but you don't see it very often because standards are so low, probably because most gamers don't know anything about culture outside of games and blockbuster movies
>>
Fallout NV has a well written story with a lot deep themes. Butr they do a good ob because they aren't forced on you and most dumb people completely miss the point and think "heheh, absolutely epic, nukes, romans vs americans and SCIENCE! XD XD". This is the mark of a good video game story. Its there, but you can play the game without giving a shit about it.
>>
>>319691563
Why? If there aren't any that come close, shouldn't that motivate game writers to do better?
>>
>inject high school-level nihilistic philosophy into game
>nerds praise its writing
>>
>>319691731
It doesnt seem to motivate them so far :^)
>>
>>319691575
Also probably because the more interactive a game is the harder it is to tell a proper story
>>
>>319690974
>hideo
He does some weird shit but the writing is pretty mediocre.
>>
>>319691796
Obsididrones will eat up anything from that company, that's just how it is
>>
>>319691796
>everything nihilistic is bad
>>
>>319692543
What about kojima?
>>
>>319692941
Same thing.
>>
>>319692941
He does some mediocre shit but the writing is pretty weird.
>>
The only stain on his otherwise excellent track record is Fallout 2. Other than that he's the most sought out writer in the video game industry and him going freelance opens up lots of opportunities for him and people who like video games.

You guys should give Undertale a spin.
I've never been touched so deeply by a videogame, fuck I even cried several time.

>since the second was complete shit?

2nd one's story was better than 3 (broken record about transhumanism, which is a side note in 1 and 2 but is all every character minor or major talks about in 3). People hate Invisible War for being consolized to hell and back with dumbed down character building and tiny levels.
>>
>>319693486
I always love everyone forgets Alpha Protocol. Even not considering the absolutely thrashy gameplay, the story is a mess with characters you hardly give a damn about.
>>
Western writers, Chris Avellone and Amy Hennig are the best I've seen. Although the talents on the latter are now wasted on Uncharted and the unannounced SW game.

In Japan I'd say Kojima (as messy as the writing is sometimes, he's the best in meta-narrative), Shu Takumi and Tetsuya Takahashi (just because of Xenogears)

>>319698727
I don't. Alpha Protocol is great.
>>
Romeo, Jackson, Sca-ji, Narahara etc.
>>
>>319699083
How can you even believe that? It's an awful mess, with a story that desperately tries to make itself complicated by adding meaningless organizations and characters that always have an hidden agenda, so you always see the twist coming. That's what you get when you get Avellone's grubby hand on someone else's story.
>>
>>319697879
>better than 3
That's not much of an accomplishment though

>good writer

Yeah, It feels like I'm really there whenever I read anything he writes.
>>
>>319700402
>>319699356
Isnt Romero a designer, not a writer?
>>
>>319700591
He wrote all the ending crawl text for all the episodes of both Doom and Quake.
>>
>>319700774
That's hardly "writing"
>>
>>319696616

>>
>>319700591
>>319700402
Romeo, not Romero.
>>
>>319690863
Avellone hasn't written anything good since Torment so I guess it's whoever did the writing for the Talos Principle.

Blundertale is well written in some storybook sort of sense.
At best, it's at the same level of a great children's movie. It can feel nostalgic.
>>
>>319690863
Has Avellone gotten out of the industry or is he freelancing now?
>>
>>319701723
Freelance of course. Right now for Inxile and Larian.

Story in video games is best done through the use of the fucking interactive medium it's "written" in. It needs to be shown instead of told. The fact that writers who couldn't get published veered into video games is testament to how inferior that sort of narrative is; especially given that /tg/-tier hacks like Avellone get praised and turned into human Kickstarter goals.

Behold, a WEBM that tells a better story than all the hours Avellone spent pounding the keys.

It's a fucking visual medium. Do you think anybody would want to read a Twin Peaks book if the show didn't come first?

You wordfags are the worst. HURRR YOU CAN SKIP GUNTHER WITH FINDING OUT A WORD KILLSWITCH DEEP GAMEPLAY
