Which one /v/?
I know the GTX 970 meme card is gimped when it comes to ram but I'm only going to be playing at 1080p maybe 1440p downsampled at the most or I might jump and get the r9 390
>>
>>319688148
oh no not this thread again

get the 390
>>
>>319688148
If your PSU and monthly power bill can handle it, get the 390. It's a straight upgrade over the 970 in every way except for power consumption, thermals, and drivers (arguably).
>>
>>319688148
GTX 970.
Don't burn your PC by buying AMD's crap.

And G-sync, Shadowplay and Nvidia Workshop support. Plus no drivers-included downsampling options on AMDs.

That's pretty far from "everything". AMD = budget cards, for a reason.
>>
>>319688256
>If your PSU and monthly power bill can handle it,

Jesus do those super expensive cards really make a noticeably impression on your bill
>>
>>319688148
Nvidia is the only one that includes tools for native downsampling through the control panel.
Ignore the maymay fags, the card's damn good for 1080p-1440p gaming at 60fps.
>>
>>319688434
wow look at all those nvidia gimmicks that don't matter

and I'm fairly certain you can downsample on AMD
>>
>>319688556
Not really, I meant that as a joke. The extra power consumption of the 390 will maybe equate to about $15 extra on your power bills per year.
>>

3.5g vram isn't gimped, it's just not as good. With the increase in games just not working with Radeon lately I'd put my money on 970.

I honestly wish I had just saved a bit longer and went with the 980 Ti. At least it was on sale for cheap thanks to black friday. I'll just grab a 2nd one for SLI later.

What's the point in gameworks if it can't even cripple the 390 enough to fall beyond the 970?
>>
>>319688825

Used 7970s are cheap as fuck. $110-$150 in most cases. I got mine for $111.

Used GTX 770s go for around $150-$170 these days too.

Either grab one of those or save an extra $20 and buy a used R9 290 for like $200-$230.
>>

>>
>>319688148
AMDfag here but you'll probably get better performance game wise with the 970 desu with Nvidia fuckery shitting up every game nowadays on PC, R9 390 is a great deal for the price though and technically superior card but it's really up to you if you want to get potentially superior performance but have to deal with some headaches of working around Nvidia's shit.
>>

Get the tri-X from Sapphire. Cool and silent as a breeze.
They don't have DX12, but you won't see games fully using that anytime soon.
>>
>>319692304
You bought into the insanely hot meme.

All GPU cards have reference models and aftermarket model.

If you get aftermarket model, which most people buy, your GPU temp will be roughly same as any other card from the market.

If you get reference model, you get high temp. A fix to this is to buy an aftermarket cooler.

Only problem with AMD was the reference cooler on the 290/X models. Which is a shame since nvidiafags exploited this weakness.

>>
>>319693415

Why wouldn't 290X support DX12?

R9 290X/390 are perfectly DX12 capable cards. Infact they have I believe 32 or 40 compute units which if DX12 async compute will benefit from if enabled properly.

I'd say nvidia's 9XX series aren't DX12 compatible because they don't support async compute and have to rely on driver support for that. (driver support will always be slower than hardware approach)

someone help. I bought the 390 a little while ago and ever since I'd had these small horizontal distortions happen.

They appear when there is motion, with the most happening when there is a crazy amount of motion like flinging your camera around a lot.

They appear even when scrolling down web pages or watching videos. I've tried taking screenshots of it but when I do they don't appear.

I think the issue might be the monitor but I have no clue.

No, look at the 7970/280x now, 3 years old and still kicking ass
>>
There are quite a few games that can/do eat more than 3.5GB of VRAM on fairly modest settings at 1080p, and others that still benefit from having a lot. And there will only be more as time goes on since consoles have a good chunk of RAM if nothing else.

The 390 will probably do better in DX12 and Vulkan games, but who knows how many of those will actually materialize.

They each have pros and cons, you might prefer Nvidia's better day 1 release track record, you might prefer 390's extra RAM and overall slight performance edge.
>>
390 is better until you realize that every game hates AMD's support and their drivers are garbage. The card in theory works better but do you really wanna buy a card that will struggle for several weeks when playing any newly released game?
>>
>>319696673
Nope, and as a matter of fact AMD cards in general get better as time goes on. The R9 290 (x) came out in 2013 and at the time were beaten by the 700 series cards. Fast forward to now and the R9 290 runs circles around the 780. The no drivers meme is just that, a meme; AMD releases beta drivers quite frequently and 99% of the time have no issues. Nvidia's drivers are WHQL signed but are by no means bug free.

Hm, why would people say that? I have a Seagate 1TB and I have had zero problems with it.

>do you really need it all on one drive
I'd like too, yes. I plan on putting in an SSD as well for the OS solely, but I would like all the space to be on one drive.

And the OS is just what I'll be using, I never said I was going to buy it. But I might pick up a cheap key in that case.
>>
>>319699138
Strange build indeed. All that money spent and you don't have an SSD and only a 390. Is this purely gaming?
>>
>>319700017
The SSD is an afterthought. I wanted all the main stuff done and sorted out first. As for the single GPU, I have literally zero need to have a second one.

>is this purely gaming?
Yes. The career's I want to get into have nothing to do with computers.
>>
>>319699950
Some say it's unreliable. It's your call, if the data is important to you, or if you have backups. If it's solely games I guess it doesn't matter in the long run. /g/ and /v/ usually universally discourage it. for ssd, the samsung evo series is usually recommended.
>>
>>319699138
I've seen from multiple sources that Sapphire 390s are superior
>>
>>319700462
How does the Crucial SSD hold up to Samsung? It's a bit cheaper
>>
>>319700713
Also the Mushkin, which is even cheaper and suggested on Tom's Hardware

970 definitely. tried amd once, not going back.

on a side note, is the 980 ti worth the $650? asking for my indecisive self
>>
>>319700949
At least you can ask yourself if it's worth that much. I have to ask myself if it's worth $1k

I'm not quite sure where to force v sync and turn on triple buffering.

I'm sorry that I'm inept

these boards are absolutely filled with trolls. neo-/v/ aka /b/ 2.0 is here to stay.

gonna ask here because fuck /g/

If i had around 500 to spend on someting to play vidya with, should i buy a pc with them, and if so any suggestions?

OR should i just buy a ps4 and save up until i can get a decent computer, i would have to buy a monitor aswell.

Thinking PS4 and then buying a PC when i can afford a decent rig + monitor

You could save a few hundred more and get a decent rig and get a secondhand PS4 down the line
>>
GTX 970.

Good to know that you're an AMDshill
>>
>>319702257
You seem a bit green, so let me get at you.
You build a pc now, in the midst of the DDR4, storage, and processor changes you will likely regret it, but not as badly as you'll regret a ps4 NOW. You just are not going to get your moneys worth. If I were you I'd say be patient. Wait another year, and this time next year throw down a g and some change on a sweet rig and a second-hand ps4.

You will be better able to future proof your hardware at that time, and most ps4 games that you'll have wanted at this time this year will be in the bargain bin.

>>319702847
I dont give a shit about any of that desu, I have nothing to play vidya atm except a shitty laptop that barely runs WoW

I just want to play vidya and i'm just wondering which one should i get, a computer for 500 now or a ps4 and play with that while i save up for a decent computer

But if stuff is about to change with components maybe i should wait a bit, maybe ill get "old" parts cheaper then when the new ones arrive
>>
>>319702847
forgot to mention that im not one who cares about graphics that much, ill be happy if im able to play games on 720p/med

I'll most likely get PS4 now and save up for that computer.

Thanks for the info tho m8

Don't buy a PS4 unless you really want Rock Band 4 and Bloodbourne
There's not much else on there that isn't already on PC that you can build a really cheap build and do other things with as well as the back catalog PC has. this is coming from someone who has both.
>>
>>319703607
I just came back from military duty overseas and all i want to do is play videogames with my mates, I was just asking mate no need to get your panties in a twist

Im gonna get a PS4 now and a PC later

>>319703780
I'll mostly play stuff like FIFA with the occasional multiplat/exclusive so im not that bothered. Of course i know they're better on PC but that'll have to wait since theres no point in me buying a pc for 500 when i can do it right once i save up a bit

So how terrible is this? Keep in mind, I'm looking at spending no more than £600/$900 really want to use it for vidya but I'm bothered about going beyond 1080p 60FPS. I'll probably also do some programming for uni. Pic just because I don't know if PC parts are more expensive in the UK.

Correction, I'm not bothered about going above 1080p 60FPS

FX-6300 is really cheap right now but you're 2 years late to the party... Get Intel instead because the FX-6300 is going to fuck you up in the long run and there are no good upgrade options either.

Don't know what to tell you, turn down shadows and grass draw distance and I can run it just fine on high settings. The only time it drops below 50 is when there are a lot of bodies present, especially during cut scenes.

AMD never again. I've pretty much always gotten the card with best bang/buck in my price range before but the software just doesn't work when it feels like it so AMD is not worth it. Forcing 3D settings never did work for example; just using game settings and it's just slow and unresponsive as shit. Takes a minute to open Catalyst Control Center if you haven't used it in a while and only 10 seconds to open Nvidia control panel.

Also them damn microstutters. I've always gotten them with ATI/AMD cards in select games since early 2000s and never with Nvidia.
>>
>>319704476

i3 6100 shits all over the FX 6300 in gaming, especially with higher clocked DDR4 memory

also leaves you room to upgrade to an i5 or i7 later

>My friend who had been using a 770 for years is officially done with Nvidia and going AMD after all the shit happening with their drivers on Windows 10.

Ha same here for different reasons. I got a 760 which shittedon the 960 until nvidia went gameworks and shitted on our performance. Welp going AMD too seeing as once they release their drivers within a week to unfuck what gameworks does, they are superior.

Had no idea they fucked shit up on windows 10 good thing I didn't upgrade.
