> Title:
Game Apparatus and Information Processing Apparatus
> Publication Date:
12/10/2015
> Filing Date:
06/09/2015

> Abstract:
A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front. A display panel and a touch panel constitute one main surface of the first portion. Holes are formed in left and right end portions of the display panel and the touch panel, and two operation sticks are provided through the two holes. When viewing the first portion from the front, an area except key tops of the operation sticks becomes a display area.

They want to have their cake and eat it too.

The cake being Wii-era casual dosh dollars, and eating it too referring to the hardcore fanbase.

Frankly, if this is legit, then I'm done with Nintendo's consoles. I love their IPs and their titles, but I'm so sick of having to deal with some stupid gimmick or another just to play Zelda or Mario or whatever.
>>
>>319685947

>>

I seriously don't understand how they can be so out of touch.

For fuck sakes, you released a GCN controller last fucking year and it sold better than the Wii U did.
>>
>>319686336
>if this is legit
First off, it's a patent and you can view it on the patent office website.
Second, just because a company patents something, doesn't mean they will use it.
>>

>>
>>319686531

Even if it is just a patent, I don't like the idea of this concept floating around Nintendo. It is not what they need to be focusing on, and it just highlights how incredibly stupid they are for even considering something like this right now.
>>
>>319686725
>I don't like the idea of this concept floating around Nintendo
You're an idiot you know that right? Nintendo, like every big corporation, has R&D that work on many things that they patent.

Nitnendo isn't just Reggie, the CEO, Miyamoto, Anoruma and Sakurai.

There are thousands of people there who work on many things.

>>
>>319687261
yes it does. He said that he doesn't like the idea of this floating around.
In his mind, he must think Nintendo is a small company.
Nintendo and ever company floats ideas and has small teams of people work on shit that get tossed around and patented. There is more than enough resources within Nintendo that they can work on this without it interfering with anything else or taking too much focus away from other projects.

>>
>>319685283
NX confirmed flop
>>
>>319686894

Doesn't matter if it's the entire company or one small facet of it, even wasting resources on an idea as stupid as this shows how out of touch Nintendo is with consumer demand in today's gaming market.

The Wii U should have taught Nintendo that gimmicks are not what people want. The NX is their chance to get things back on track and seeing this idea even considered long enough to get patented tells me they're putting people to use in the wrong areas (doesn't matter if it's one person or an entire team or the whole company).

I don't want to see ANY hint of more gimmicky controllers that take away development potential for third party devs while also ensuring some controller gimmick is shoehorned into their IPs in the future. It tells me that they're focusing on the wrong aspects of their games, and makes me not want to buy their products.

>>
>>319685283
That's awesome
>>
>>319687650
They made them commonplace and showed that it was ideal for moving around in a 3D environment. Keep in mind the ps1 launched with no analog sticks on its controller at all. I for one am glad nintendo tries to figure out different ways to improve gaming overall instead of just releasing the same console with slightly better graphics every few years. Sometimes they hit the jackpot, sometimes its a complete failure, but they are more inventive then any other company in gaming.
>>
>>319688370
The gamepad could have not been a gimmick if they added proper touch support in video games, and longer range/able to be completely disconnected from the system. Think a big 3DS with gamepad abilities.

Even still, it's an interesting piece of technology when somebody's using the TV.

I think part of the problem is we've reached a point where control in video games has never been better.

Two analog sticks for movement and camera control with a handful of buttons that perform as expected when pressed will never be beaten by any touch/motion/gimmick controller.

I just kinda think they're innovating in the wrong direction.

>That was a normal goddamned controller.
No it wasn't the buttons were insane.

Also, the last good controller they made is the current wii u pro controller which is a normal controller.
>>
>>319685283
Great, now i can spend all my play time looking at a crappy 480p display obscured by my own hands instead of my 50" hdtv.
>>
>>319685471

This was actually a Sony patent.
>>
>>319693778
They're too slow and have social fascists in charge. Hell, that's everywhere in the net now. If I'm gonna get my news with incredibly dumb opinions on the side, I might as well stick to shitposting I'm familiar with.
>>
>>319693715
>Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
Yep. They thought the Wii U would instantly be a best seller by riding on the popularity of the Wii and they quickly learned they were wrong. Right now they're trying to beef up the Wii U lineup a tad more before they release the NX (which they plan to be much different than the Wii/U thank god) so as not to pull a Sega.

Fingers crossed.

>>319694127
The theory is that there will be a home console and a removeable/extra handheld version that goes with this home console so you can play both at home and on the go. The picture is supposed to be the handheld portion you donut.

>tfw nintendo's sitting on the patent for mother 3's rhythm-based battle mechanics
Of all the fucking things to patent, it's one that would make most turn-based games about 3000% better.
>>
>>319695170
there's nothing keeping devs from doing what paper mario/mario & luigi did
>>
I really hope they stick with the rotary shoulder button patent
>>
>>319695170
Always seems to be Japanese companies that patent game mechanics and design. Square Enix, Bandai, Sony and now Nintendo. For what reason?
>>
>>319695326
Yeah, but M&L's gimmicks are a hell of a lot more difficult to implement than a simple, neat little rhythm mechanic.
>>
>>319691126
Power glove and other shitty controllers
>>
>>319695501

Fucking this.

Namco Bandai is sitting on the patent for placing mini-games in the loading screens.

IIRC they made a game for the PS1 that had like Galaga on the loading screen or something. It would have made the wait back in those days way more enjoyable.
>>
Wait is it basically a touch screen controller? Because if it is then its going to be complete fucking garbage.
>>
>>319696759
yes, and it's confirmed coming january
>>
>>319696759
Most people disagree with you. It would make Nintendo actually stand out. The other 2 consoles are just PC's with a refined controller design from last gen.
>>
>>319695501
Naughty Dog has a patent on gameplay without loading screens.
>>
>>319696759
There are physical buttons, but the display wraps around where they stick out.
>>
>>319696910
>It would make Nintendo actually stand out
Just like the wii u stood out with its tablet controller. We all know how that ended up.
>>
>>319696926
Naughty Dog is a subsidiary of Sony now. Sony owns various patents related to AI, music game mechanics and also several rendering techniques and libraries.
>>
>>319697057
>Just like the wii u stood out with its tablet controller.

Yes?
>>
>>319697057
Yeah, people fell in love with their Wii U and actually think the controller is innovative and allows a different playing experience to the conventional designs of PS4/XBO which are literally just PC's in a smaller form factor.
>>
>>319696759
No, think of the controller as having a flat face. There are two analog stick (drawn as hexagons seen under the thumbs) while the rest of the controller's face is the actual screen.

This is the handheld portion.

>>319697057
People talk shit about the tablet but in terms of being able to move around and play while on the toilet, or without even needing to turn on the TV, I was living the dream. Didn't get much use out of it as a secondary screen though.

The biggest fault with the Wii U aside from marketing WAS the tablet though. It's no doubt expensive so it brought up the price of the entire Wii U, kind of like the Xbox One with the kinect. So people think it was expensive.

You know that patent expired earlier this month, don't you? There's a loading screen minigame jam being held in the expiration's honor.

Well, I really hope Nintendo scraps this idea. Tactile touch screen tech does exist tho, if it's a touchscreen that feels like buttons that'd be cool but I doubt it
>>
How to make a perfect controller
>Take an Xbox one controller
>Make the bumpers be pressable from all angles, not just the far side. That shit is annoying.
>Leave everything else the same except
>Add four buttons on the bottom of the controller where your middle and ring finger naturally rest, 2 on the left, two on the right
>Make the buttons have different braille like bumps to differentiate them without having to look.
>Keep two "options" button, but add a third slider right in the middle with a button to go with it that would be used as an activator for the slider
>The slider could be used for all kinds of shit, it would be contextual based on the game. You could lock the running speed of your character, or use it for FOV or other settings, whatever.

Bam. Perfect controller.
>>
>>319685283
why? why can't we just have a really good ergonomic controller like the snes and gamecube controller
>>
>>319689021
I will admit that it's much faster and more precise, but maybe too sensitive

I really wish they'd leave controllers alone, they're good enough already. You have complete, PRECISE, control over your videogames and that's what they're supposed to do instead of gimmicky bullshit.

>Wii U's Controller is too fucking big

>NX is going to be too fucking small
>>
>>319701014

There is buttons

The point is that the entire front face of the controller is a visual screen, including the controllers
>>
Between the Amiibos, letting NoA handle game localizations (censorship everywhere), to the constant renewed focus on kiddie games despite them saying core gaming is coming, to them basically pushing out the 3rd party out the door, to the gimmicky controls, to the awful price of games that almost never drops, to the high price of digital games, to the awkward and ancient online infrastructure, the zealous/insane fans and just the entire attitude of the company of the past decade and a half..

I'm done with Nintendo. Even their handhelds are losing allure with me.
>>
Keep in mind

This is a patent request that's been filed to be judged, filing patents doesnt mean theyve been doing this, they have to request it to be accepted.

Meaning, its literally too late for this to be NX if they are planning a 2016 release

Shit takes around 2 and a half years for approval

If anything, its going to be the next Nintendo handheld
>>

Just wish Nintendo would focus on the games rather than the controllers or gimmicks. They clearly have an amazing understanding of game design but lately have been shoving it aside in favor of gimmicks.

>in-screen buttons

smartphones tried this since 2010 and always fail because fingers hide the fucking screen.
>>
>>319706667
They definitely won't release the NX in 2016, they need an E3 event a year beforehand to build up hype and leave enough time for announcement of features in between.
>>
>>319707139
nintendo clearly caught a case of retardation from sega, don't bet on them doing a new console right or learning from the wii u
>>
>>319705025

where's the gimmick anon?

Where on this controller, is there a gimmick?

Being touch screen without needing to hold a stick is a gimmick?
>>
>>319707548
Which is why they'll repeat what they did with the wii u, and announce the NX at e3 next year while releasing it in 2017
>>
>>319685651
It looks retarded. With these two pentagon pads in the way there's little place for touch screen buttons.
>>
>>319689147
Hey fuck stick, adding buttons to a block you hold in your hands composed entirely of buttons isn't a gimmick. Analog sticks were definitively a gimmick intended to enhance control, but unlike motion controls, they actually succeeded in providing the player with an intuitive, precise way to control in three dimensions, in a way that could not be easier done with any other tool.

The Gamecube's GBA compatibility is restricted to peripheral use, only some games used it as an additional feature, and incredibly few used it as the primary means of play.

The Wii's motion control is the whole reason people are tired of this. It was imprecise. The only thing it had the CAPACITY to excel at over analog sticks was IR pointing, and even that was rarely used properly. Every other facet of the motion controls made whatever game you were playing worse. This being realized later with gyro in controllers and handhelds isn't any better, especially considering gyro control doesn't accomplish the one adequate thing the Wii Remote provided. Every other console uses motion controls, but as a SIDE thing, and theirs all suck shit too. Nobody likes motion controls.

Double screens on the DS, 3DS, and Wii U is fine. It doesn't actively hinder your ability to play games like motion controls, but it's rarely enhanced anything significantly, and in the case of the Wii U, raised the price of the console way too high for what it was, especially when the Wii U is the double-screened nintendo system that utilizes the second screen the absolute least.
>>
>>319707139
You can't leave people hanging for that long anymore. The traditional console life cycle, from announcement to replacement, is going to die very soon.

Nintendo certainly can release the NX in 2016 if they reveal it early next year and show off the launch window games at E3.
