>Next year a jury of game industry professionals from Ubisoft, Rockstar and other ventures will seek to honor games that provoke emotional experiences in the inaugural Emotional Game Awards.
>The affair is the brainchild of French video game producer and researcher Dr. Erik Geslin, and it may offer developers a new space to garner attention for their work and celebrate games as a medium of emotional expression.
>It's also a potential opportunity to take part in a big ol' game jam. The EGA organizers intend to hold a 40-hour "Emotional Game Jam" that will be livestreamed closer to the event, which is slated to take place on February 12th.

Has /v/ ever cried during a video game?

>PhD in video game production
>published research on video games and emotions

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I work in academic research and I've seen some retarded shit, but a PhD in fucking how video games elicit emotions? That's a whole new level of bullshit being Piled higher and Deeper.

Think about it. Most all research is tax payer funded. So people's taxes were used to hire this asshole to make up a couple correlation studies about how pictures and sounds tied to clicking elicit emotion. Literally entire bodies of psychological research already dedicated to this, yet here he is marketing himself as an "expert". Fuck me, I wish I didn't have such a well conditioned sense of right and wrong or else I would be duping retards all the god damn time.

I've never cried while playing a game, and I'm the kind of person who cries pretty often.

Though I will say, if I could get some decent Zelda 2016 info I might cry right now. I'm dying to play that game.

On a side-note, I've teared up before listening to the Zelda 25th anniversary soundtrack, but never during any game.

Ssssshhhiiieeeeeeeeeet. I guess I'm a fucking pleb when it comes to this shit. I didn't realize the video game industry had such an illustrious academic program.

Are there non-profits centered around getting people to donate for important video game research? I'd love to support such important research!

Mass Effect made me cry.
I was having my Shepherd romance Ashley the republicunt and things were starting to pick up.
Suddenly we're on a mission trying to blow up some robot factory or something I forget, I think it was the same mission where I shot Wrex for questioning my glorious leadership.
Anyway Kaiden who I strongly disliked was dealing with the bomb while Ashley solo'd a bunch of robots or mercs or something I can't remember.
They both needed my help, after some hesitation I chose Kaiden. The bomb afterall is the priority.
She didn't make it to the ship, but she had time to tell me she understood why I did what I did and admired my decision before she was vaporized.

Yeah, a couple times. From memory I cried at
>Telltale's TWD Ending
>Bioshock 2 Neutral Ending
And honorable mentions to Metro 2033 and HM2 for making me feel really shitty but didn't actually get me to cry.

There's nothing wrong with having emotional connections in games, This War of Mine was a game I had fun with while also seeing a deeper message and it's connections to current events, but what will end up happening is the awards with be full of games like Emily and Gone Home that title themselves as emotional experiences yet are completely hollow and don't really affect the player.

Depends on what makes you cry. MGS3 and 4 fucked me up because I have attachment issues with my brother. He was who I looked up to my whole life, so killing my mentor and brother in MGS3 and 4 were death to feels.

I'm also a sucker for self sacrifice for the good of others, So MGS3, P3, Max Payne, and quite a few others did me in the rear
>>
The problem with an "emotional game awards" is that emotions are entirely subjective.

I think the most emotional a game has ever made me was Journey, because my partner disappeared literally right before the final walk and I waited a good five to ten minutes for him to return before I realized he wasn't coming back.

Ignoring the fact that that simply won't happen to each player because of how Journey is designed, there are people that this probably also happened to at some point and didn't think much of it, but might have been bawling their eyes out to the ending of The Walking Dead S2 (which I didn't really have any feelings either way towards).

It's not really possible to rate a game objectively I suppose, but you can at least try. You can look at the graphics or the music or the voice acting or the gameplay design and try to see where it works and fails. But emotions will vary from person to person and I mean, as much as that leap of faith in the final level of nights into dreams mattered to me I know 90% of people that played that game thought nothing of it at all.
>>
I don't sob or anything but it doesn't take much for viddygames/tv shows/whatever to make me tear up, even if I'm not rationalizing it as something that's particularly moving

I'm still mad that Telltale completely squandered season 2 except for staying at wellington.

The final episode of season 1 was fucking fantastic throughout, and then they go and fuck it up by making Kenny live rather than sacrifice himself and then have the guts to say he hated Ben rather than have his character progress to forgive him or at least realize that Ben, while he fucked up, at least gave a shit most of the time rather than the season 2 cast who were both retarded and made terrible decisions.

Goddammit. I started to get teary eyed fighting all of Rando's men. I was able too keep it together even while fighting Rando, but when I read that line I bawled like a baby. When he turned his life around from alcoholism.

He thought of his wife and child and decided to do it for them, opposed to his entire past. Until that point, he somewhat blamed them and their deaths for his addiction, but he realized that he should be the man they would have wanted and stops the drink.

He actually showed love for his dead family and acted responsibly, instead of using them as a crutch
