On Uldum, the original AVs regularly lasted days. You'd go to sleep, wake up and the fight hadn't moved. It was awesome.
The current iteration is "everybody rush straight to the boss even though horde has a distance disadvantage and will lose 99% of rushes", so eventually the horde stopped queuing en masse, which means alliance can't queue for it either unless you want 40 minute queues.
Speaking of which, have they fixed the long alliance queues or 35% horde win rate yet? I only played for pvp; let my sub expire when I got tired of choosing between instant loss queue and 30 minute win queue.

Uldaman event before Archadeas does not work as intended.
Mobgroup linking in general is horrible, where in vanilla some pulls were hard since there were alot of mobs you can now pull those groups in 2-3 pulls since mob linking simply does not exist. Makes instances like RFD a joke.
RFD is a mess anyway, gong sound before first boss does not work, escort quest does not work, NPC simply disappears, you'll have to do the instance twice to complete it.
When you die outside an instance you don't repop at gy, instead you repop at the place where you died.

To my knowledge Alterac Valley is supposed to be in its original state on Nostalrius (although considering the general quality of the server from before AV release, I'd wager it's far from perfectly realized).
Corecraft is also ought to feature Alterac Valley as close to its original state as you can have with 2.4.3 client at level 70 (content like Korrak the Bloodrager is present, but as the map layout was switched a bit between the patches and that's client-side, it's going to remain as-is) once it finally releases (half a year away at very minimum).

Something I miss that was gone from it forever; just being able to fish. I wouldn't do it often but in some hours long game I would and it made the zone feel like a real zone, not just a video game area for one specific purpose.

Oh I never actually played vanilla wow except on private servers like 8 years ago, and I only got to like level 30 so I don't really have anything to compare it to. I only played on the official servers during Lich King and I quit after the abomination that was Cataclysm.
I only started playing Nostalrius because /v/ kept praising vanilla WoW and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'm like level 12 on 2 characters so I haven't raided yet, but I'm sure they're fine.

That being said, the way it is actually played emerges from the content but also the community. Changes like absence of resource-based victory and much stronger NPC defenders certainly contribute to longer games, but players are a wild card. Perhaps there's an unspoken mutual agreement towards making the games fast because most players don't want long games (even if, in terms of rewards, they were pretty much the same) or maybe the long games of the old days are simply because players were too shit to press any advantage their team might have received and today the optimal play would result in decisive decently quick games regardless of the tuning.
What the fuck was the explanation for AV again? Like why was it a BG? WSG and AB always made sense to me because they take place in zones which are very much contested and Alterac was just a destroyed castle with elites iirc

I'd imagine the servers are in France because the Internet routing is such that it offers the best compromise in terms of latency for most of everyone. Most Transatlantic cables are in UK on their European end while the connections between UK and mainland Europe go through Netherlands and France. For this reason and their more favourable legalization, France and Netherlands also tend to have a lot of hosting services in general.
Pretty much all private servers are hosted in one of those two countries. Even a lot of non-International servers (Polish, Czech etc.) are.
