Never played Dark Souls but all Witcher suffers clunky combat, albeit W3 is much better than previous ones. If it's at least as good as Arkham I would be happy.

Souls combat pretty much perfected the third person slow action combat games.
Unless it's supposed to be crazy like dmc or bayo, it should be like souls with a simple lock on to strafe around the target.

My biggest complaint about Witcher 3 is how the dodge mechanic is so inconsistent.

>No I-frames or chance to dodge while dodging
Actually getting yourself out of the way doesn't appear to work very well when fighting many fast moving enemies. And neither does blocking.

The whole gameeplay is designed around anticipation. If you see a big werewolf in the distance you won't just run in and wreck his face. You'll have to check the bestiary first, apply oils, equip the potions/gear best suited for the situation, etc...
That's why there are no I-frames, you have to be careful not to go all out on an enemy and retreat if you think he's gonna parry/counterattack.

The game would be a 10/10 with better combat and if sidequests weren't Bethesda tier "follow glowing red trail". I loved it but have little desire to replay it since the gameplay was so unsatisfactory.

I understand that oils, gear, and such are important for fighting monsters but I still feel like defensive options were really ignored. The only options for upgrading defense is Armor rating and resistances which just decides how much the player can tank. The lack of evasion based gear/potions/etc. upsets me.

If you want a more defensive playstyle you'll have to rely on Quen and its related Abilities. This Sign can turn you tino a fucking tank if you put enough points into it. It makes the game a bit too easy though.

I did like Quen when I was playing Witcher 3 (haven't gone back to it in a while). I instinctively try to dodge more than tank, so maybe I just personally prefer having it as a viable option in games. I might go back soon and put skill points in quen related stuff and try that out.

There's an ability in the red talent tree that actually makes you invicible when you dodge. You don't take damage but you still flinch I think.
To be honest, the main thing that made me hate witcher was
A) how overly complicated things looked (Not were)
but mainly how the whole map looks like it was once somethign better then some faglord decided to add way to much of everything like just jamming a fist full of buildings and leaves everywhere which annoyed the fuck out of me.
