Yes. Its fun as hell if you make everyone into a "class type" (the IZ version does this), and don't anything but the most basic Gambits (I only ever used the "attack same monster as leader" one and a basic heal one).

Anyone can be strong in XII, but each character has different stat growths for very minor changes.
Fran has the highest vitality, so is the best of the party with axes and hammers. Use her as a breaker if you're playing IZJS.

on the standard american version, the levling up system is a grid, and every character can unlock every spot on the grid, but the international version, parts of the grid get locked to certain characters based on which spot they unlock first i believe, so in internation version your character would be weaker, or forced into a certain role like healer or black mage

It's called the international version because the PAL and NTSC versions had more content than the original JP release, so they re-released it with a ton of more features in japan only.

What's it like to have the taste of a 12 year old girl?
5 hours of plot at the start, 40 hours of walking from A to B bookended by a half-hour cutscene followed by a 2 minute end boss.
Whether it's worth playing depends on what is more important to you in a jrpg: experiencing an adventure or mentally switching-off and playing filler gameplay with nice ambient music.
Mind you, gameplay-wise, the side-content and gambits are decent.

The problem with your statement is exactly what turned XIII into what it is. You fight a set amount of enemies along a narrow corridor, and you fight the story bosses at exactly the level the developers planned.
A good RPG gives the player freedom. If you spend the time to level up your character, your reward is that you wreck a boss that would normally give you trouble. If you want to enjoy the challenge, then you just skip the grind. It's far better than having the developers choose when you progress.

It's been a long while since playing. I remember the process of preparing for dark aeons being pointlessly time-demanding though. If I remember right you had to delete all of like 200+ grid spheres for each character and replace them with higher level spheres which added more to your stats.

It's alright. Decently interesting, though fucked up story. The combat had potential, but fell into the issue of everyone being similar (International version apparently fixes this, but I haven't played it). Things like max MP being heavily tied to awakenings or whatever made mages annoying to play, especially with how MP restored and the tech for MP restoration had to be done manually for about 1/2 the game.
Plus the hunts and rare game. Dear god was this a good idea that was executed fucking TERRIBLY.
I really disliked it in the end myself, but some swear by it.
The International Zodiac edition is the best Final Fantasy game, in my honest opinion.

Localisation is phenomenal here. The reams of side text are all dead on, the different registers of voice are clear but not dragon quest farcical, the voices are mostly terrific. For a game that succeeded mostly on feel it's so important.

I've played many Final Fantasy games and this is the only one that I didn't fucking despise. In fact, it's probably one of my favourite games. Anyone that complains about gambits always neglects to mention that you don't have to use them. I've played through it four times and I hardly ever use them. I'm not sure I've ever used them outside of grinding, actually.
It's a gem in an otherwise mediocre series.
