I played this game recently because of /v/, and I was worried it wouldn't live up to the hype. I played the first mission, thought it was meh. Dropped it for a week, went back, and I played through the rest of the game in two days. It's so fucking good. It really puts modern game writing to shame.

Also, to anyone starting it for the first time: rebind the keys before you start playing.

does this story get any better? I just got to hong kong. Im really impressed with the gameplay, not the shooting, but how many gameplay options each level has according to playstyles. But the story so far is kinda shit so far. Feels like a grind, infiltrate a base, 5 min cut scene, debrief, infiltrate another base, rinse repeat. The writing or characters arent great either.
>>
>>319632906
Yes, the story only gets better afterward. I used to drop the game at Hongkong on my earlier playthrough, I'm glad I didn't on my next.

The game is kind of slow during the New York City chapters. If Liberty City doesn't make you quit, a few of the Hell's Kitchen missions might, although it's crazy how many ways you can tackle just that one area.

Things get better when you destroy the NSF base and encounter Lebedev (the fact that you can save Lebedev and kill Navarre is amazing and makes the game 10/10 already), but again I feel like it drags when you hit the MJ-12 prison. Things get better again when you realize you've been at UNATCO the whole time.

After that the game is amazing 10/10 GOTYAY holy shit I'm the greatest cybernetic soldier ever I can do anything blah blah blah, at least until you hit Vandenburg. After that things drag a little bit until you defeat Page. Area 51 is practically a breeze at that point but the Aliums are still freaky and some of the scariest enemies in the game.

Low tech and pistol. Crossbow and dragon tooth sword is goat. The crossbow tranq one shots nearly every enemy silently (albeit over time) and regular darts/tranq base damage is same as sniper rifle's. At higher levels + targeting aug and melee damage aug, crossbows and dragon tooth smashes all non INF strength doors and turrets/cameras.

Invisible War should answer all your questions: in order to attract a wider audience, it needed to be dumbed down and it needed to sacrifice depth to look prettier.

Extrapolating that explains most of the woes of AAA gaming: to compensate for the budget, you've got to sell more. To sell more, you've got to make it as inoffensive to as many people as possible.

The video game industry became hugely profitable. It was shortly thereafter infiltrated by soulless business and marketing majors. These new saboteurs know how to lie to people and sell things to as many people as possible. This results in dumbed-down games with training wheels that cater to 12 year olds on xbox and are completely linear and play like movies.

Another huge problem with games is the fact that the 7th generation of consoles took away development from the PC. The popularity of the consoles led to most developers working on consoles which retarded the graphics and gameplay in all the games that were created. Games for 7th generation consoles were made for outdated hardware incapable of high resolution. The games were also developed to work on a controller, which made the gameplay and AI behavior suffer in accommodation to fewer buttons and less precise inputs.

The budgets became huge and money was squandered or downright embezzled. Look at the credits of quake 3: 13 people. Now look at the credits of any modern AAA game. It will have 300+ people and there will be numerous studios where work was subcontracted.

Everyone has their hands in the cookie jar trying to get a piece of that 500 million dollar game budget. The entire system has been poisoned from the inside. The only hope is a complete crash of the video game industry to send the cockroaches scurrying.

This, only the focus group is now habits that are datamined extensively. Every second of gameplay: what people do most, where they go, what they click, where they die, where they get frustrated and quit, etc. Mapping what people do through the course of a game allows people to make a more formulaic game. Painted by the numbers and totally soulless.
>>
>>319651106
Makes sense, it's the same in cinema.

>Publisher wants developers to make game more 'accessible' and tests it by having 'playtesters' be people that rarely if ever play videogames

Older games were made with a clear vision.
