When Bad Company came out on consoles only it was the end of an era. Battlefield had left the PC and abandoned it's initial fanbase.
BC2 came back to the PC but it wasn't the same franchise it used to be. BF3 was honestly a return to form in some ways, but even then it's too much like BC2.

Which also lead to the death of many online games as well as the entirety of Nintendo WFC for DS/Wii, all which are hardcoded to go to what were GameSpy servers. I think Action Replay/Ocarina/etc codes can redirect you to a different master server though
