First EDF I've bought (played a good bit of 2017 and 2025 at a friend's) and I have some questions.
I'm just going through as Ranger right now, and I'm wondering when I need to start grinding? I've been playing mostly online, mainly because the cave missions are scary alone.
So, what exactly is the gameplan for getting unlocks, building armor up and leveling other classes? Obviously, playing at my bud's house I never really had to worry about this.

Usually it's the difficulty switch. Because of my vidya autism I went from normal to hard to very hard, etc. The thing you'll be grinding for is AP for jumping spiders and retarius' bullshit at higher difficulties.

In honesty the enemies in EDF basically go from cakewalks to unstoppable death swarm with little in between, depending on your equipped weapons and armour. It's not 'conventionally' good gameplay but it's still a lot of fun.

The insects are made of paper, the robots are pretty spongey, the transport ships are hugely resilient. EDF is absolutely a mindless horde shooter that rides on the cheesy voice acting, wonderfully overpowered weapons, and destructibility.
the voice work is perfect.
also the framerate is still crap most of the time but I love how the explosions look. Go nuts with a grenade launcher and it's like you just turned the place into hell.
Too bad it came out so close to xenoblade, it still tore me away from it for an entire day though.

I'll warn you straight off the bat that EDF isn't good in the normal sense. Not at all. It plonks you down in a big map with a shitton of insects and a gun that's way more powerful than it has any right to be, and a bunch of screaming comrades who will all get eaten by giant insects before the mission is over. It's very little more than that. It's a total throwback to the days before complex cutscenes or A-lister voice actors, when '200 weapons (many of which are the same!)' and '100+ missions! (all of which are about shooting insects and robots)' were enough to get you to buy a game off the shelf. In this age of polish, it's a miracle that EDF survives to represent the legacy of shitty fun B-games.
