Cloud was never emo in FF7. Although its a shitty excuse, if you read the novella or whatever about the events before AC and then watch the director's cut, it makes sense that he's depressed at the beginning of the movie. Not to mention he gets over it by the end of the movie.
I honestly blame kingdom hearts, but no one ever seems to bring up Cloud in those games.

AC cloud was upset out of guilt but also because of Geostigma infecting him, the kid he adopted, and a bunch of other people. It was a disease with no cure and even though it really wasn't contagious, nobody knew for sure.
As much as people say it, he didn't really whine. He kept everything in and didn't tell anyone anything, something that Tifa told him to stop doing.
Once his stigma got cured he started slapping shit left and right and his attitude got better. And it stuck after that.

Post-Lifestream Cloud walked the lightest he ever did. He was open with Yuffie. (Showed weakness.) He was the one who said they should find their own reason to fight and that they should let Aerith go. That guy was at peace.
Trying to say AC is consistent with this is stupid. Don't try to find a justification for it in VII. The official reason exists: Fangirls knew him as a moody guy, that's why they portrait him so. The in-movie justification is that the Geostigma attacks you mentally. That's it. You don't need mental gymnastics. AC was a garbage film, which retreaded the game, the characters were rebooted, derailed or mattered not in the least, where the fights had no weight and grey/anime was turned up to eleven.

Of course that all changed because AC retconned all that. He didn't actually defeat Sephiroth at all because he just comes back, so that massive achievement is totally undermined. CC introduced the idea that Cloud is not a hero in his own right, but is in fact Zack's "living legacy", further undermining the character. Then AC Complete came out, and Cloud is turned into an even bigger faggot, because now it seems he needs Zack's ghost to turn up to give him a pep talk when things get difficult. Fuck that gay shit.
Most people's problem with Cloud is that "moody and emo" has become his popular interpretation thanks to Dissidia, KH and AC (even if it makes sense in the latter)

I totally forgot about that. Yeah, Sephiroth had a presence through the entire game because wasn't physically there really. He was in Cloud's head fucking with him. The end of the game showed the party first killing Jenoveroth and then later it shows Cloud killing him 1v1 mentally. It was supposed to be the categorical end of sephiroth for good and that was what the story ultimately ended on. AC really raped the shit out of FF7.

They decided they needed to give us the Cloud we knew from the majority of the game, not the Cloud that finished the game. That's why it seemed so shit and pointless to me because nothing had changed, the world was in the same sorry shit state it was in during disk 3. Yeah not emo, but I mean stricken with illness and generally unsure of himself. In FF7 the whole thing starts early on and he quickly goes downhill mentally, then we learn who he really is, an outcast with no confidence. AC seemed to put him right back to the bad Cloud from the game and not the hero he managed to become at the end. He was never a hero like Zack really because he was a different kind of guy, but he still managed to step up and break free of Sephiroth's control and ultimately saved the world. What he did made him far more significant than Zack or anyone else.
