I know they're being faithful for the original, but Jessie and Wedge look kind of like shit. They didn't update their designs at all, just made them 3D and they look silly. Jessie especially looks bad when compared to Cloud or Barret or any of the Advent Children character models.

>Edgelord
He's a socially avoidant teenager who has trust/abandonment issues. Every time someone says "edgelord" or "emo fuckface" it just comes off like they didn't play the game. He's a damaged character-- and his development as the game goes on is to overcome that. He's not saying 'whatever' by disc 3, and nor does Cloud carry on his air of being a mercenary who doesn't care about anything that's happening around him 30 hours into the game.
>>
>>319565415

They already used him in Kingdom Hearts and he was overly serious but not a pouty faggot. Other characters played off of him and put him in his place. Might not work as well in FF8 because it's a lot more serious overall.

>>319564970
This would be an issue though. Tidus had a lot of it too and he was obnoxious.
>>
>>319568734

It's translated like it is because it's for Americans.

You can maintain a character, but that doesn't mean that it'll translate. A likable character in one culture isn't necessarily likable in another. Sometimes the only way to keep the tone of the character is to change the character unless you want little cultural subtitles that have to explain why so and so is supposed to be immediately disliked despite appearing like an upstanding person. That kind of apologetic distancing is a lot more common in Japanese culture. People might not like it, but a lot more people are willing to do it a lot more of the time to keep the peace. The commentary can be on how that sort of personality affects Squall's ability to lead. In American culture maybe I know 1 person like that. "Whatever" might be a little more bristling, but it's typical teenage angst for the culture. If Squall acts like a person that Japanese would consider a wall of tatamae, he's going to come across as all that more weak and distant to an American... and maybe the translators didn't want it to go to that extent.

>>319568929

Actually I would argue that Tidus's inner monologue was both the best acting performance for him and the best part of his character.
>>
>>319568358
Who says that the awful writing is staying the same?

We haven't heard enough voice clips to judge from it so far.
>>
>>319568463
It was fine by the standards of the time.

Now it's 20 years later, and it's going to be voiced.

Not giving that script a massive overhaul is a big mistake if they are already changing so much.
>>
>>319569034
The contrast between inner Tidus and his spoken lines was the highlight of his character. It made him complex and likeable.
>>
>>319569087

Considering they said in the interview that they want it to be a game that fans of the original love, it wouldn't make sense to change the story.

"In addition to delving into these episodes more deeply, we’re preparing a number of mechanisms and such. To those who played the original version will know the important parts and understand the story from the beginning to the end."

Honestly, even with the whole multi-part thing, all i care is that the game is good.

Taking aside that this is probably so that the game will cost like 90 bucks altogether, if putting it in multiple parts is something Nomura and Kitase genuinely think will turn out a better overall product, I'm ok with that. I just want them game to turn out good, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the methods taken to obtain that.

That being said, something being split into parts won't necesarily kill it. The original 4 .hack games was meant to be two, titled Infection and Quarrantine. But Bamco had them split each game into two (and quite honestly they DID run out of space), so Infection became Infection and Mutation, and Quarrantine became Outbreak and Quarrantine. That is why it doesn't feel like the games didn't really reach a "stopping" point between games until the end of Mutation. But even then, the story did not suffer. Only our wallets did.

>mfw I'm a way bigger Zelda fan than I am a FF7 fan
>happy that FF7 is getting a full-blown, proper remake but mad jelly at the same time that the N64 Zeldas just got some handheld, half-port BS.
>the remake for FF7 makes me realize how ahead of its time the game really was, and how it'll be properly utilized thanks to modern 2015 tech, as you've said
>realize that OoT and MM were also ahead of their time, and had a ton of cut content and concepts taken out due to limitations, like SoTC-styled boss battles, seasons, advanced horse combat, romance options, dialogue choices, etc
>we'll never get that because Nintendo are lazy, incompetent fucks now; no return of the classic OoT vs FF7 debates in the old internet days, brought back in a new light via proper remakes.

God I wish Nintendo wasn't a joke company now. It's funny how Square Enix was a joke last gen with all of their FF13/Lightning trash, but they've really started to pick up their game this gen. I'm happy for them, at least.
>>
>>319571663
At least Lightning Returns had good gameplay. They just needed to make it about a different game.
>>
>>319571089
dude its pretty clear that they intend to milk this as much as they can

and the retarded fans will believe whatever they say
>>
>>319571840

As long as the game turns out good in the end, I'm fine with that.

You know what happens when you milk something but it's shit? You get Blizzard.

So, how do you think they'll approach her death?
Play it out exactly as in the original?
Let her live throughout the entire game (perhaps wounding her and/or having her die at the very end)?
Have her die as normal, but give the player a chance to bring her back?

On one hand, it's a well-known moment and it might be risky to mess with it.
On the other, they know people want more of her and this is an opportunity to give them more.
>>
>>319571981
>Let her live throughout the entire game (perhaps wounding her and/or having her die at the very end)?

They won't do it. Literally everyone in the original dev team was against the idea, and they're the ones making the remake.

The nostalgia
>>
>>319571981

They'll probably throw in a side quest where Cloud can speak to her one last time through the lifestream or something. Getting closure.
>>
>>319571957
well at least my second sentence has been proved
>>
>>319572157
Well we get that in AC.

I don't think Kitase will go against what he said about it back in 2003

>"In the real world things are very different. You just need to look around you. Nobody wants to die that way. People die of disease and accident. Death comes suddenly and there is no notion of good or bad. It leaves, not a dramatic feeling but great emptiness. When you lose someone you loved very much you feel this big empty space and think, 'If I had known this was coming I would have done things differently. These are the feelings I wanted to arouse in the players with Aerith's death relatively early in the game. Feelings of reality and not Hollywood."
>>
>>319572157
What's more closure than death, nigga? She died in disc 1 and was forgotten about before we started disc 2.
>>
>>319564270
Ffvii is boring schlock; I'm glad the steam version was made in rpg maker
>>
>>319572407

A loved one's death is usually the opposite closure, silly boy. I wasn't talking from the player's perspective but Cloud's perspective.

As much as milking is generally a negative term, if you deliver in the end then at least we know you're doing your job, that there are still people on the team who are passionate in their work.

But if you milk it and are delivering mediocrity at best, it shows that you don't care about the thing you're doing.
>>
>>319572756
>it shows that you don't care about the thing you're doing.
Not necessarily. It can mean you're just incompetent at doing it. Toriyama is a mighty example of this.
>>
>>319569638
Incorrect. More than just the English version said Aeris. The French version had Aeris
>>
>>319572968

Toriyama is the George Lucas of videogames, and I mean that in the flattering sense. He is a great ideas guy that NEEDS someone in charge to rein him in, or he'll become too self-indulgent and ruin his own projects.

After all, Toriyama is behind a lot of the fans' favorite scenes in VII, like Cloud-chan.

Bigger question, will they taint the remake with Crisis Core shit?

I wouldn't mind a flashback gameplay event or two where we play as Zack, but if they throw Genesis and shit then I'm out.
>>
>>319573174

Crisis Core? I don't think so.

AC? Oh you better believe Kadaj will be a secret boss.
>>
>>319572756
I'd like to have your optimism my friend, but everyhing square made since ff9 was very bad, story wise at least.

I do not think that splitting a game into three will make it better or more "in depth". It will simply mean that what would have been in one game will get stretched needlessly to fit 3 highly marketable products.

And Square-enix is litterally the Blizzard of JRPG
>>
>>319573280

I loved the story for FFX. The religious feel of the game was amazing.

Someone around here has to

>but everyhing square made since ff9 was very bad, story wise at least.

I enjoyed the stories of X, XII, and the Drakengard series (which was more Cavia, but they work under Square).

>And Square-enix is litterally the Blizzard of JRPG

No that's Banpresto

I thought the title of George Lucas of video games belonged to Kojima.
>>
>>319574062

I think the people who say that haven't watched too much of Lucas's filmography and only think of Star Wars.
>>
>>319573747
I will never undertand why some people could like X

XII was "what could have been great: the game" but failed in every possible way in its execution. Their horrible story was saved only by the gameplay at least in X part.

Drankengard was mediocre gameplays wise but I'll admit that it had a good story.

But great games have great everything, like NieR.

Then again maybe its just that ff7 remake is too big a thing to simply be an honnest attempts at gamemaking and not a corporate cashgrab

Remember that devs are actually quite low on the food chain and most dont deserve half of the shit they get.
>>
>>319574569

I was quite young when FFX came out so I suppose I'm still a little blinded by nostalgia. For what it lacks and what it does wrong I forgive quite quickly mainly due to how much I loved the game back in 01.
>>
>>319574569
>I will never undertand why some people could like X
It was many people first Final Fantasy. That probably overwhelmed them as kid/teenager.
>>
>>319574569

It was my first FF. I played PC before I was given a PS2 for christmas when I was 15.
>>

>Remember that devs are actually quite low on the food chain and most dont deserve half of the shit they get.
This. Keep in mind that for all the coroprate shit going on in the company, the devs themselves probably are trying to make the best remake they can. The question is if they can get the time and money they need to do it. Devs get screwed over by corporate all the time.

>Devs get screwed over by corporate all the time.
That narrative lose some strenght nowadays though. All you gotta do is look at kickstarter, Early acess, Tim Schafner and Star Citizen. Say what you want, but publishers keep them in the leash. And those leashes are clearly necessary.
>>
>>319575734
yeah now devs screw you directly
>>
>>319575734
Tim Schafer is not the same as most people. That guy has never been trusted with money, even back when working at Lucasarts.

Developers are not publishers. They know how to make games, they don't necesarily know how to use money on them.
>>
>>319575734

eh. only some devs.

and even then, you could still blame publishers, who feel threatened by such things, and push to make everything in the industry more expensive for everyone.
>>
>>319575985
We should forgive publishers then. Poor guys don't know much about making games and thought it was good enough.

It's clear the devil is not Publishers or Devs as a whole. It's just lack of creative talent. We can pinpoint names of reference in this industry exactly like we can with movies directors. Games also should be read withing the auteur theory. Why are Bioware games so shit in comparison to yesterday? How can Bethesda keep printing money? Why Obsidian still makes gems?
Well, Bioware has no big creative name behind them that we can pinpoint as a good reference. Videogames are just suffering from lack of creative talent. We need good directors.
>>
>>319576642
because retarded fan will still buy those game and then try to rationnalize why they did
>>
>>319569638
I have the greatest hits version for Playstation and the manual says Aeris.

Either way, if they kept the ability to choose character names, which they almost certainly won't, problem solved
