So in case you didn't hear or don't play Warframe, the new update has revealed a fairly big thing- Warframes are just suits, and you're a psychic child that's been controlling your suits from a coma all this time. You get to choose from a few faces and four voices, and bam. This is it. This is your character. You even get dialogue choices to decide what some of your new powers will be.
This alone isn't a terribly big deal, but what drives me up the wall is that this has been an increasing trend in videogames, by which I mean throwing away silent and/or faceless protagonists in favor of established, voiced ones. Fallout. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Destiny. Even Halo, to a degree. This is popping up absolutely everywhere, and I know I can't be the only one who hates it.
I hate to throw in a buzzword that doesn't mean anything, but this is literally meme game design. The argument you hear is "well, it makes dialogue more emotional!" and to a certain degree, I get that. But in a game where you're supposed to be in complete control of your character, where the character is supposed to serve as a surrogate for the player, all this does is throw in a super obnoxious degree of segregation between the player and the character. Say you actually are emotionally invested in a dialogue sequence. Unless by some miracle your character has the same emotional reaction and inflections that you would've had yourself, the effect is, IMO, just jarring.

If a game follows a pre-establish hand-crafted storyline, adding voiced dialogue is the obvious next step to enhance the whole game.
If the game had no plot to follow, just a background overarching setting, then adding canned voice work is a fuck up.
Man, this reminds me of a little indie game called The Fall. You basically play as an AI on board of exo-skeleton with an unconscious human inside, who's trying to get the fuck out of some hostile environments and save the human because muh laws of robotics.

I actually liked Warframe's story. It had a pretty grim, but believably good, sci-fi story.
Every human had modified themselves into oblivion, genetic mutants were pouring out of every hole in the galaxy, and the tenno were these space-growths augmented specifically to assassinate every known thing in the universe. The closest thing to a human they had was their robotic AI.

And this I liked. I always thought the frames were old suits of armour with vestigial personalities, so each one ha different powers and looks, and moves around differently. The Tenno are genderless spirit things that inhabit a frame to give it animation, sort of like temporary resurrection for a long-dead warrior legend.

I have the exact same opinion as you OP, and the most recent game to disappoint me on this was Fallout 4, which was a huge stab in the Fallout legacy's back.
You know what's worse though? Nothing will change, and more and more games will do this. By adding voiced protagonists in FO4, the rest of the series now have to do the same. In FO5, and let's be honest here there will be a Fallout 5, I can absolutely guarantee you that there will be cinematics and a voiced PC.

Doesn't contradict Valkyr at all.
Prior to being "awoken" the tenno is 100% convinced they ARE the Warframe, and feel everything it feels.

Valkyr would have felt the torture in complete lucidity and be affected mentally by it.
Same thing with Limbo and Mirage, when they died, the unawoken tenno probably "felt" the death and went into shock. The only thing that doesn't add up is Lotus being upset over Mirage dying in front of her, because the frame would've been expendable.
I thought the operator is who gives you life, which is why you collapse when she exits the pod, why you move when she holds on to you and why you regain your normal strength when she sets herself up on the liset.
I think it's still true that warframes are controlled by some sort of entity but its definitely the operator who grants you your power as a tenno/frame pilot.

It can be fun, but only if you are able to make the character do exactly what you would do in a given situation. For instance, I was given the option at some point in Mass Effect 2 to cut off a merc and just shove him out a window. Since I was shooting them all up anyway, that seemed like a great way to give this cocky asshole a figurative middle finger. A lot of the time I can't choose what I would actuallysay, though, and it ends up frustrating. Most people like it because they're not actually thinking about shit like that and it just superficially appeals to their desire to be a "bigger part of the game world/experience".

What was the point of even giving you the option to design your character and their background if it isn't even your character?
There is a time and place for a voiced protagonist. In a game with an almost wholly linear story path without much in the way of choice even in sidequests? Sure, use an established character. You can explore their character through gameplay, and that's great.
But don't pretend that you're giving the player freedom and then try to give the protagonist characterization they didn't consent to. It's fucking horrible that you're forced to PTSD about the child you see die in ME3 even if you're the coldest, most sociopathic bastard alive in prior games in the franchise.
Yes, it's funny to hear the sole survivor say things like FUCKING KILL and deliver their lines in a humorous manner but IMO it detracts to the overall feel and tone of the game. I was annoyed when I got a decent amount of choice in most of the sidequests but as soon as I went back to the main quest my personality was pretty much set- I was utterly obsessed with finding Shaun, couldn't spare Kellogg because DAD ANGRY, it sucked.

It's like saying Gordon Freeman, for example, was suppose to "be the player" when he is actually a scientist and the player might not want that. Fallout is more free on your choices, but that doesn't mean the character he is supposed to be exactly what you want. Hell, according to your logic you could get pissed that the exact line you wanted is not in the options.
It's true that more options on what your character can be won't hurt; we didn't get many of those in fallout 4. But that's not a problem with voiced protagonists. It's just a problem with the few options they gave you.
