I liked how it integrated puzzle solving and monster negotiation into combat. It felt like SMT negotiation, except that instead of being random the game gave you hints at what dialogue choices to make in and outside of combat. It was like a puzzle, but in battle. Dodging attacks was easy at first, but (and perhaps its because I'm shit at video games) I found myself dying once I hit Muffet and onwards. The fact that the battle screen itself actually changed in size during fights threw me for a loop, and I liked how battles actually helped characterize monsters themselves, when most games don't have characterization beyond the artwork and dialogue.
And I don't think the linearity hurt it necessarily, but then again I like Final Hallway XIII so maybe that's just a sign of my shit taste.
Meanwhile, most quality RPGMaker games I've played don't actually have anything but puzzles, and when they do have combat, like Off, its incredibly simple and mostly just using the attack button and healing when necessary.
