V and VI are my two favourite FF games, and they're also the two that currently lack aqny kind of definitive version. The SNES versions have mediocre translations and some weird bugs along with lacking the pretty cool content added in the GBA versions, the PS1 versions have load times and even worse translations somehow, the GBA versions have lower resolution and much lower-quality music even with the patches, and all the new versions have these fucking awful graphics. You can't fucking win.

I've always been a bit mixed on Amano. As an artist I think his stuff looks really interesting, and I think his creature designs and a handful of his character designs are pretty cool. I really like the original Warrior of Light from the first game's cover, for example.

But when it comes to a lot of his work on Final Fantasy, particularly the SNES titles, I don't think it's that good or fitting. His tendency to make almost everyone look like a wispy. waifish albino regardless of their actual characterization is extremely annoying, and his portrait art just doesn't really mesh well with the rest of the games' aesthetics. A handful of his character designs stand out as great, but by and large I don't think his signature style works that well for FF, and the whole albino sameface tendency hits the casts of V and VI particularly hard.

There's a reason that a lot of people tend to envision FF characters based on their sprites and not Amano's artwork - see how much fanart of Faris still depicts her with the long purple hair instead of the wispy blonde ponytail - and I tend to do the same.

FF9 never got a PC release like 7 and 8 and they lost the assets to it so it would have to be built from the ground up and squeenix isnt gonna do that I dont want them touching it anyway

I think Amano is okay as CONCEPT ART, like it was originally. He came up with all sorts of mystical crazy looks and such, and as something to then give to applied artists to give them ideas and get their creative engines revved up I think it worked out alright.

But that was because it stayed purely in the conceptual realm, it does not fucking work as the actual final product. I think it's yet another example of the mistakes that can be made when somebody goes back to something old and "improves it" with "latest technology" but fails to grasp that the LIMITS of the original medium and tools were key to the original creative process and final product. People didn't fall in love with these games because of the weird concept art that 99% of buyers never say anyway except maybe on the box or in a magazine. What mattered was what was in the game. Altering that to try to mash in other stuff tends more often then not to fail miserably.

A classic (at this point) non-vidya example would be Lucas with his horrible digital remasters of the original Star Wars where he mashed in tons of stupid shit that just cluttered everything up because TECHNOLOGY and of course absolutely everything about the prequels. But the same phenomena shows up again and again.

He's done some other one-offs like his Garnet art where his art just doesn't match the design at all. Sometimes for characters that he designed in the first place, for some reason. He has an obsession with giving everyone incredibly pale hair or something.

Faris is the only one I can think of where the sprite isn't even remotely close to his design though, and Lenna to a slightly lesser extent. Apparently because he makes literally everyone wispy and blonde, but the sprite artist needed to make the party member sprites look distinctive/fitting for the game so they basically ignored his designs when doing the sprites.

For some reason Japanese devs are prone to getting rid of source code. For instance the PS4 version of FFVII is a port from the PC version which is turn was reverse engineered from the disc version of the PS1 version because the source code was pretty much immediately thrown away after the game was finished.

Oldish-fag developer (in my mid 30s) though not in vidya. Things were really, really different in the mid-90s (let alone earlier) anon. Asset control systems basically didn't exist in any real formal way. Storage space was EXPENSIVE, often bespoke and non-standardized, poor durability, etc. Yes, there were ways to do decent archival with high quality tape, environmental control, and so on but it was not a no brainer. And a lot of companies were not thinking about long term value at all, it just didn't even occur to them that it would matter. There was this whole massive scramble mentality, everything changing and moving so fast. Nobody saw the kind of environment we've got today develop, and everyone assumed that when you were done with something you were done, not that it would be something you might want to work on again 15-20 years down the line on utterly different platforms.

So it was REALLY common for companies to take media that had been used for a project and simply write over it and reuse it for a new project. Or stick a lot of stuff on some shitty medium and literally throw it in the janitor's closet where it got forgotten about and had a pipe develop a leak over it so that when somebody tried to find it again 6 years later it was under a layer of mold (yeah I saw that one personally) etc etc. Remember zip drives? Jaz drives? The former had some lasting power, the latter tended to eat data and they weren't alone.

It was a total mess. Some companies did preserve assets for various reasons, sometimes stuff got saved by sheer luck (some dev took it home with them and found it later), but particularly on consoles a lot vanished for good. Even on the PC there are lots of games where we have binaries but the original code & assets no longer exist. Real flaw in the development of digital really, copyright should have required source/asset submission as part of registration.

Biggest problem with all these new 2D games, and really, pretty much every 3D game. I mean, all the textures are drawn at different resolutions, which makes them all look out of place. The style of art for everything looks like it was all done by independent artists first and then they all put their work together without the thought of whether it would all fit nicely first.
