Kids today are not interested in anime or very Japanese things like 90's kids were. Final Fantasy 7 came out at a perfect time to capture the zeitgeist of the late 90's kid and it's likely never going to happen again.
The FF7 remake could be absolutely perfect and the only people playing it would be 20-30 somethings like us and 14 year olds who want to be cool like their dads/older brothers.
