Time for me to catch up this huge classic!

Which version? Emulated PS1 or Steam?

I'm no expert but I don't think it matters that much. If you have 10 bucks then buy it on steam if not then just emulate it.
>>
Just wait for episode 1. It's going to be the entire midgar arc.
>>
Remake

PS1
>>
Download from Playstation Store and play on your PSP/Vita.

If you don't have the above, emulate.
>>
Steam version with mods.
>>
>>319462415
PS1, PS4, Steam or Emulate so you can speed up some of the slow ass battles
>>
PS4.

>>319463723
The PSX version has a worse translation.

Get it on Steam or the PS4.
>>
Steam since PC is the master race and it's the superior version since it comes with a trainer so you don't have to grind.
>>
Are the problems with the PC port fixed aside from the 15fps battles and the victory music not kicking in sometimes?
>>
>>319462415

The one thing that always drove me nuts about the PC version were pre-rendered backgrounds being noticeably worse.

Thank for the answers anons.

I think I'll take Steam version, are there available mods that still respect PS1 feeling? (such as 60fps, HD texture etc... no updated models like this)
>>
>>319466170
I still think the remake should have went with a look more similar to this image. Only much more better graphically of course.
>>
The new PS4 version has

>higher resolution (models have no jaggies)
>60 fps
>achievements
>x3 speed mode
>no random battles mode
>some other mode I forget
>comes with a great theme
>>
>>319467192
...and won't be released until at least 2018!
>>
>>319467632
Isn't it the same as Steam version?
>>
>>319466170
There are two different 60 FPS mods; one that is a full 60 FPS overhaul, while the other emulates the PS1 games with 15 FPS animations/30 FPS camera/60 FPS menus. Right now they both require you to convert the game to the 1998 version, while the latter <should> be getting a Steam version before the end of the year. That one is part of the Reunion mod pack, and thankfully it can be the only thing you install from it.
>>
I've had FFVII on PSN for about four years and haven't touched it past the intro.

Should I keep playing? I hear it's really fucking long. I kind of enjoyed it, but not a whole heckuva lot.

Advice?
>>
>>319468240
I would say go ahead and play until you reach Junon. If you don't really feel motivated to keep playing at that point, go ahead and drop it. So long as you haven't been going straight towards the objective and are looking around for optional stuff, you'll have a really good idea of what the rest of the game will be like at that point.
>>
>>319467192

Some of those modes feel like one button cheat codes.

I can dig the triple speed. But No Encounters and Battle Boost?
>>
>>319468826
That's because they are one button cheat codes.
>>
>>319467192
>60 fps

false.
>>
>>319467192
PC patch with those 'cheats' when

I do actually own a PS4 but I'm not buying this for like, the 5th time and I feel like replaying it

The x3 speed sounds great
>>
I really fucking hate the beginning of this game. I got up to the Golden Saucer and only at that point does it at least sort of open up.
>>
>>319469524
Weirdo
>>
Does the PS4 version fix the shitty audio of the PC version?
>>
>>319467808
no. It's the Steam version with the PS1 music
>>
>>319463591
This, there is some very nice model replaces and added textures. Best version by far
>>
>>319467808
More or less.
>>
>>319468240
It's not that long. It's only about 15 to 20 hours unless you choose to do all the pointless side shit, which makes it about 70 to 80 hours.
>>
>>319468943
It runs at 60fps when the screen goes WOOSH when you enter a battle.
>>
>>319468826
>the Steam version sells you levels and gil
>there are actually PC friends who have paid real world money to level up their characters without having to play
>>
>>319471890
steam version was updated a while ago with ps1 music
>>
so I just picked up the PS4 version and the Midgar Zolom is a lot easier than I remember. All you gotta do is put an Enemy Skill materia on and an Elemental+Fire materia on your armor to survive Beta and then hit him with it. I'm not even grinding. We were all dumb as kids.
>>
>>319471890
The steam version got the PS1 music patched in like a year or 2 ago.

FF8 still has the midis tho
>>
>>319471697
Yeah, the PS4 version uses the PS1 soundtrack.

Why even the PC version released on Steam a couple years ago still uses that god awful 1998 horribly arranged midi soundtrack is beyond me.
>>
>>319462415
PC version, Ultima Edition.
>>
>>319473062
>first time I played the game could not kill Demon's Gate
>played years later, he's easy as fuck
>>
>>319473163

It doesn't
>>
How are they going to fucking do this in the remake?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTc9sLmOR0A
>>
>>319473080
>FF8 still has the midis tho

Which is easily remedied by an audio pack fix someone made like 10 years ago, then it actually sounds just like the PS1 version with the exception of a superior world map theme.
>>
>>319473679
Yeah, I know. I did that for my playthrough. Just noting that FF8 hasn't gotten an official patch like FF7 has.
>>
>>319473502
Hahaha, this is brilliant, I'd almost forgot.
Destroying every planet in the solar system on its way, lmao.
>>
>>319473062
Weren't you supposed to use a chocobo to evade it?
>>
>>319473972
That's the idea. It's meant to be too strong to handle the first time you encounter it, but if you have some system mastery, you can take it out with some prep and luck.
>>
>>319473502
Is this becoming a new dank meme?
>>
>>319473972
yeah, if I was a PUSSY
nah but I ended up actually doing that because I thought you got to keep the Chocobo you catch at the stable. I was wrong
>>
was FFVIII a good game

aka was it not like VII at all

Yes, the whole point of going to the chocobo farm for the first time and learning about chocobos was so that you could catch one to cross the marshes with without getting attacked by the Midgar Zolom.

Although if you're particularly crafty and time it just right you can get across just fine on foot without getting caught.

FFVIII PC version with PS1 music on PS4 when?
>>
>>319463517
This. Playing PS1 JRGs on the PSP and the Vita s by far the most comfy way to play these games. Their graphics probably aren't going to impress today, and playing on a smaller screen they will look better.
>>
>>319463517
I tried to play FFVII on my PSP and it skipped like crazy for some reason.
>>
>>319473225
What is that?
>>
>>319467192
It's not a higher resolution

The prerendered backgrounds in that game were only saved at the game's resolution and then lost, it's literally impossible to get a higher resolution image
>>
I highly recommend playing jrpgs on either handhelds so you can play in short bursts whenever you want, or emulated on a pc so you can just put it on 5x speed whenever you want.
>>
buy it on PS4 so you get the FFVII theme

unless you have a better theme, I don't really know if there are really cool themes out there
>>
>>319478145
The Bloodborne ones and the DMC4:SE one are pretty cool.
>>
>>319471909
Link to some visuals?
>>
>>319462415
Just emulate it, nigga. Do you really want to give the Square-Jews a tenner for a twenty year old game?
>>
If you have a PS4 and cant wait for remake, get the original on PS4 for 3x speed and a ff7 theme for your ps4

only crappy thing about 3x speed is it doesnt auto select if you hold down X, but without 3x it does

I really wish I liked FromSoft games. It'd make the reason I keep buying Playstation consoles more worthwile
>>
>>319473502
LOL. That's ridiculous. It's like what an 8 year old would think of as badass.
>>
>>319462415
>huge classic!
you mean overrated pile of shit?
>>
>>319462415
WHICH VERSION HAS THE BEST PRE RENDERED BACKGROUNDS THOUGH ??
>>
>>319474150
No it wasn't.

>>319475260
So did I yet I never had any problems with it.
>>
Replaying it now on tablet in 60fps (it goes up to 223fps when uncaped)
>>
>>319473502
>Uranus survives

Heh.
>>
>>319474074
But then it immediately respawns.
>>
>>319477515
Everyone understands that about pre-rendered backgrounds, that's why I referred to the models
>>
>>319481738
So? It doesn't spawn in at your location.
>>
>>319467489
Stop trying to find a zinger where there isn't one, you look like a gigantic ass
>>
Is FFVII worth picking up by someone who has only played (but still enjoyed) FF1?
>>
>>319482060
Yes.
>>
>>319479289
It is badass. You're just a faggot.

The PS4 ''cheats'' are a fucking pain in the ass

Maybe except the 3x speed because original speed quickly becomes tedious at times after all these years

Just knowing that you can cakewalk the game at the press of a button without any punishment system makes me feel like an autist for not using it.

Fuck Squeenix
>>
>>319468826
No Encounters is perfect for low level games. Which is something I've always wanted to try after completely breaking the game over my knee.
>>
>>319462415
which version, the shit version or the shit version?
>>
>>319474518
HP Plus materia, friend.
>>
>>319474617
Its been on the PSN (PS4) quite some time now. And its even 10 bucks
>>
>>319483003
I'm talking about FF 8th
>>
>>319462415
This game will never look better than running on a PS2 w/ texture smoothing and displayed on a CRT

Sincerely,
Someone who hasn't played it like that in like 10 years
>>
>>319466690
Honestly I wish the remake was more along the lines of a graphical upgrade and maybe a few changes to support actual 3D environments rather than what they choose.

Honestly I don't even want voice acting, you can leave it just being text.
>>
>>319462415
psp eboot
>>
>>319474404

Funny story, at that part I accidently sold my chocobo materia and saved the game. So I was way under level to beat the zolom and had no chocobo (I saved my game at this point and only used one slot for my save because of memory card) to cross the water, what I noticed is when you save the game the position of the zolom was not where you would save, I started going straight to the cave on the other side and every time it came close I saved my game, let him kill me, then load my save so I'm at the same spot as before but the zolom was not near me yet. I kept doing this until I reached the cave lol. Once I got the airship I went back to the zolom for sweet revenge.
>>
>>319482060
That's exactly how I got into the series in like 2003. Best part was that I didn't realize how hyped FF7 is/was at the time, but it became my favorite game. You might enjoy running into FF1 artifacts here and there, e.g. the text windows for an obvious example. Although I'm surprised you wouldn't just try them in order at this point.
>>
>>319484004
>I was way under level to beat the zolom
>I was way under-skilled to beat the zolom
ftfy
>>
>>319484454
Lol if you say so,

The fact we needed a chocobo to get across meant we were not meant to fight and beat, guess that's why it repawns right away after killing it. I could have wasted a few hours grinding but I really wanted to see what happened next in the story.
>>
>>319462415
Steam with 60FPS fix.
>>
>>319485413
Literally all you need to do is use Tranquilizers on everyone, then put Elemental=Fire on Barret's armor (he has the most HP). He will just barely survive Beta at even the lowest possible level.
>>
>>319485413
You aren't meant to fight it. You can, though, and (like everyone in this thread has already said) if you know what you're doing, beat it very easily.

You just didn't know how to beat it. Since it's an RPG where the only skill involved is preparing beforehand and knowing what enemies are weak and strong to, you weren't skilled enough.
>>
>>319481058
Well they are all the same, but I suppose older versions work better since you don't have super smoothly rendered models on prerendered backgrounds that are stretched and blurry as fuck in HD.
>>
>>319466170
The best mod is the one where it replaces the over world lego models with the original higher poly battle models, it also replaces the NPC models too for consistency. I don't know if the NPCs were custom made or they were just buried in the game data.
>>
>>319487582
Fuck you mean they never re-rendered the shit ? Lazy cunts
